MagicTan offers no sun protection whatsoever and it is advisable to stay sensible in the sun and use adequate sun protection at all times. Fake tans are much preferable to 'real' ones in my opinion as you get the lovely even colour without the risk of skin damage.
Being an impatient soul. I couldn't be bothered to have regular sun bed sessions before my holidays last year. I decided to follow the examples of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston and invest in a MagicTan. I would have liked their figures and their money not to mention the lovely Mr Pitt but you can't have everything can you?
Everything I'd heard about MagicTan was positive so as I had a £5 coupon off the normal £25 price I booked at my nearest MagicTan centre, which just happened to be in Whitley Bay, in North Tyneside. There are plenty other places throughout the country too.
**What is MagicTan?** It's a private tanning booth, which sprays a fine mist over the body in less than a minute.
As I don't like the idea of inflicting the sight of my pasty white squishy body onto poor unsuspecting beauty salon staff, a tanning booth sounded ideal.
I was a touch nervous before my appointment so took my husband along for moral support, he just came to have a good laugh cos he expected me to turn orange. I had been advised to exfoliate and moisturise before my session, so like a good girl I did, taking extra care with the rougher, dry patches around my knees, elbows and ankles.
The salon comprised of a large waiting room area with lovely comfortable white leather settees and a beautifully tanned receptionist welcomed me. She carefully explained the tanning procedure to me and asked for medical details to ensure I was not allergic to certain things. She was very reassuring when I asked if I would turn bright orange. I was told that MagicTan has three grades of colour and she recommended that I go for the lightest as it would look too false if I opted for a darker level.
**How does it work?** MagicTan comprises of a DHA self tanner, bronzers, aloe and moisturisers to give a streak free golden tan. The DHA sugars (or dihydroxyacetone) react naturally with protein in the skin to create a tanned colour. The particles will only stick to skin and will not stick to each other so preventing uneven patches and streaks. It is suitable for all skin types and especially good for those with freckles or who burn easily and cannot tan.
I was taken into another room, which housed what looked like a large shower cubicle in it. The receptionist explained what positions to hold in the booth and demonstrated where to use the provided barrier cream to prevent brown palms and fingers and also the soles of feet and in between my toes. The aim is to get the most natural effect possible. I was given a shower cap for my hair (attractive!) and advised to take off all jewellery and my watch.
You can leave your knickers on if you wish but I decided to be brave and tan my behind, I just hoped there was enough tanning spray available to cover it. I carefully ventured into the booth, it can be a bit slippery when your feet are smothered in barrier cream and read the instruction poster in front of me. Luckily it was in big writing as I had taken my glasses off. It reiterated everything I'd been told and had handy diagrams on the positions to hold in the cubicle, in order to attain the best coverage.
With trepidation I pushed the MagicTan button. My first position was full frontal with my arms out to my sides, palms facing frontward. I did feel stupid and was pleased no one could see me. The spray started at my feet and quickly rose up my body. Luckily it was not cold or I would have needed a wee. It felt like a fine mist was covering me. Maybe I should have closed my mouth as I did spend the rest of the session worrying about having orange teeth (luckily they were ok). This only took about 7 or 8 seconds. Once the spray stopped I had plenty time to get into the next position, which is a running position facing the side of the booth. I found this position a bit confusing, as I am totally unathletic and had never been in a running pose before. The next position is facing the rear of the cubicle and luckily there did seem to be enough spray to cover my bum. The final position is the running one again but facing the final direction. In total the MagicTan takes less than a minute.
The salon provides plenty towels to blot up the spray tan but to be quite honest I was practically dry on leaving the booth. After redressing I caught sight of my face in the mirror and was pleased to see that I had a healthy glow about me.
What really amazed me was the speed in which the tan developed, by the time I got home (about 20 minutes later); I was a lovely golden colour. This quite upset my poor husband who had practically lived in our local Stand and Tan for the past few weeks and wasn't as tanned as me. I had been advised not to shower until the next morning to ensure that the tan was properly developed and was really pleased when I did so to see that none of my lovely colour came off and I was totally streak free. I had a bit of a dirty brown patch on one of my ankles, which showed where I had been a bit lax with the barrier cream, but it was barely noticeable.
I went off on my holiday feeling a lot more confident about myself as I hate being the big white blob by the pool. The tan made me look slimmer and healthier and lasted for about seven days by which time I was starting to gradually tan.
MagicTan offers no sun protection whatsoever and it is advisable to stay sensible in the sun and use adequate sun protection at all times. Fake tans are much preferable to 'real' ones in my opinion as you get the lovely even colour without the risk of skin damage.
