On a stormy February afternoon, little Stella Rivers disappeared - and was never seen again. There were no clues, no demands and no traces. All that remained was that cold, damp... more...fear and dread that touched everyone in town.
What kind of a person would kidnap two children? That is the question that haunts Wexford ... more
when a five-year-old boy and a twelve-year-old girl disappear from the village of Kingsmarkham. When a child's body turns up at an abandoned country home one search turns into a murder investigation and the other turns into a race against time. Filled with pathos and terror passion bitterness and loss No More Dying Then is Rendell at her most chillingly astute. With her Inspector Wexford novels Ruth Rendell winner of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award has added layers of depth realism and unease to the classic English mystery. For the canny tireless and unflappable policeman is an unblinking observer of human nature whose study has taught him that under certain circumstances the most unlikely people are capable of the most appalling crimes. On a stormy February afternoon, little Stella disappeared. There were no clues, no demands ... more
and no traces. There was nowhere else for Wexford and his team to look. Just months later, another child vanishes - five-year-old John. Wexford and Inspector Burden are launched into another investigation and chilling similarities to the Stella case emerge.
Advantages: Some of the characters are marginally interesting Disadvantages: Pretty much the whole book
Introduction
I am a huge fan of RuthRendell's and so to have to pan this one pains me greatly. I have often thought in the past that some of her non-series books (ie non-Chief Inspector Wexford) have been a little disjointed and seeminly not as well thought out as others, but this one really beats the biscuit. If this is the first Rendell book you're planning to read - don't. She can do so so much better. Start with either the Wexford books or something like "The Crocodile Bird", a non-series book I found really stunning.
The author
RuthRendell has written an enormous amount of books - some 60 plus I believe. She is probably most famous for her Chief Inspector Wexford series, but has also written many non-series books, which tend to be written from a far more psychological point of view and are written both under her own name ...
Advantages: The main plot is good and I found it hard to put down. Disadvantages: The sub-plot is unnecessary and overcomplicates and lengthens the story.
Introduction
I am a huge fan of RuthRendell's books, particularly the Wexford novels. She writes well, with very few exceptions sucks you in from the beginning and her books usually have a good ending. On the whole, I enjoyed this book very much and think it compares well with her other books. I've already read it three times.
The author
Most people know who RuthRendell is, so I'll keep this brief. She has written huge numbers of crime fiction novels, starting in the 60s. Her (in my opinion) best books are probably the Wexford novels, although she has also written a number of 'one-off' crime novels, ie the characters are not repeated in other books. She also writes as Barbara Vine.
The plot
The book begins, somewhat confusingly, with the death of a policeman in a bank robbery. I say confusing, because this actually has ...
Advantages: Some good ideas for a story Disadvantages: Not much happened, inconsistencies...

Intro
The last book I read by RuthRendell (?The Water?s Lovely?) was quite frankly a big disappointment ? I wrote a review on it at the time ? and I wondered if it was just a blip or if things were going downhill with her writing, or if perhaps my tastes were just changing.
I got into reading RuthRendell books back in 2000 when on holiday and having finished my books I started on my mum?s, and since then have read over 20 of her books. Anyway, having arrived at my parent?s for a long weekend recently my mum excitedly handed over the two newest RuthRendell books which she bought at the airport to read on their holiday. She was raving about ?Portobello? in particular and what a great book it was, so I hoped ...
