I have just finished reading this book, and what a read it was, I just absolutely loved it. I've been trying to think of a word or two that sums it up but I just can't. It's spine chilling in places which made me want to stop reading when I was on my own. It's gripping and intense making you just want to read on and on until you find out what's going on and reveal the mystery that starts on the first page. It's emotionally moving as you share the family's trauma as they go through various upsets when they try and uncover what actually happened all those years ago.
If you're reading this review you probably already have an idea what the book is about, but I'll set the scene anyway.
It starts off in 1983 (25 years ago) with the main character, Cynthia (14 at the time), waking up to an empty house - her family (Mum, Dad & brother) have completely vanished, didn't even leave a note. It slowly dawns on her that they aren't coming back and nobody knows where they are.
Then we are brought to the present day, and from here it is narrated from Cynthia's husband's point of view - Terry (something which I found strange at first, but then I thought he is like the reader in that he wasn't around when it happened and he isn't inside Cynthia's head, so it is like an outsider's more objective version of events). They also have a daughter called Grace. It's 25 years later and they are taking part in a TV show in the hope that someone will come forward with some new information.
I don't want to give too much of the storyline away…
The TV show didn't seem to alert anyone from the past and make them come forward with information, nevertheless strange things start to happen anyway, and things from 25 years ago start turning up, little tit bits of information start appearing from Cynthia's past to form the missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle, but this just throws more unanswered questions into the pot, making the characters feel like they are going on a wild goose chase, but urging you to read on. At various points the author makes you wonder whether Cynthia is going mad & making things up, such as the things she sees, or various happenings. This just makes you, the reader, start guessing what the answers are, and so there's no alternative but to just keep on reading until you find out the truth.
As you read through the book, you feel like you are actually taking the emotional ride with Cynthia, Terry and Grace as they go through ups and downs and uncover the mystery of her family's disappearance. The last few chapters are so intense & have so many plot twists and turns that you just will not be able to put it down, I don't think I spoke to my husband in the three days I read this book!! I also found the very last page very moving, and when I closed the book I just sat there with it in my lap, reflecting on what I had just read.
Imagine not knowing whether your family were alive or dead, and having to live with this since you were 14 years old. Did they leave? And why did they not take you with them? Were they kidnapped but still alive somewhere unable to get in touch? Or were they murdered and disposed of without a trace? So many possibilities, and so much heart ache for someone to live with.
I would recommend this book to anyone, even those who don't read very often, this would have them gripped from start to finish. I cannot praise it enough.
Advantages: Enthralling, great plot, great characters, well written Disadvantages: None
...give it a go.
No Time for Goodbye tells us the story of Cynthia Bigge, who was a normal 15 year old girl living with her parents and brother Todd until one day they just disappear. Cynthia wakes to find the house empty and with no trace of her family. Twenty Five years later, Cynthia still hasn't a clue about what happened to her family, now married to Terry with their daughter Grace. But suddenly Cynthia begins receiving strange letters and telephone ... ...Cynthia going to finally find out what happened to her family, or is she being led down a very dangerous road...?
To be honest, I did find the whole concept of the book quite intriguing, the idea of a missing family with just one left behind opened up all sorts of questions in my mind before I'd even read the first page which I think is a sign of a good book! I quickly did a little research on the author, Linwood Barclay, and found that he's quite ...

Advantages: An easy to read thriller which has it's moments. Disadvantages: Not as good as No Time for Goodbye, and you can guess the killer rather easily.
I came across LinwoodBarclay after reading NoTime for Goodbye, which was a huge bestseller, mainly because it was a Richard & Judy summe read winner. I really enjoyed NoTime for Goodbye, it reminded me of Harlan Coben's books, so when I saw Too Close To Home I decided to give it a go.

Advantages: The most gripping books I have read in a long time Disadvantages: N/A
To put it simply ? I love to read. While, it hasn?t always been a favourite pastime of mine, Harry Potter changed that, they really got me more into books, and subsequently, I have read them all several times over. I then got bored of them, and didn?t know what else to go to, stuck in the belief that, I was more addicted to the series, than to reading, but I soon found other books I enjoyed, the Chris Kuzneski books, ?Notime for Goodbye? by LinwoodBarclay, ?Say Goodbye? by Lisa Gardner, and I even read the Dan Brown books. That was all this year, starting in January, being currently unemployed, I have had so much time on my hands, and reading has really filled that, but when I finished my last book, ?Say Goodbye?, I was at a loss for what to read next.
The other way I have been filling my time, besides writing on here, is watching ...
Advantages: an interesting thrilling story Disadvantages: unlikeable characters, disappointing if you read "no time for goodbye"
It was with a sense of anticipation that I started reading "Too Close to Home" by LinwoodBarclay, having thoroughly enjoyed "NoTime for Goodbye", his best seller of last year. I often find when I have really enjoyed a book by an author another title can either be just as enjoyable, or a real letdown. Generally there is no middle ground, but with this book as I read it my emotions were mixed.
Continuing the theme of "Book with a snappy title which sums up the plot", this book is about a family, the Cutters, who live next to a the Langley family who are murdered. The story is set in Promise Falls in upstate New York. Derek Cutter, the son of the family, was actually hiding out in the house when the three murders happened as the book starts. Having planned to use his neighbour's house as a loveshack on their departure on holiday ...
