Advantages James Herbert

Disadvantages Not on form

J.H. makes an homage within the book to the movie Ghost, but it was far too similar for me to give it the praise that I see has been awarded by my fellow reviewers.
This book for me was/is a good holiday book. I read it on the beach in Spain. I read it in 2 days, it was an easy read and it flowed. The story was typical Herbert in that it was subtle and easy going, almost light one minute then as a reader I was taken to a dark, malign, evil place.
The story of a man being killed when having an out of body experience and then having no body to return to was interesting although I have a nagging doubt it has been done before although I can not remember where or when so I am willing to concede that it might be a fresh new idea. The story of a "ghost" trying to protect his living family from a malign, murdering influence, either assumed or real was so similar to Ghost that it invaded my thoughts a lot as I was reading this book.
I found the story very predictable, without spoiling, I saw the plot "twists" way before they happened, I thought they were quite clumsily done and almost as if J.H. had clobbered together several ideas scripts stories films that had been done before to put out another book. I expected more from him.
I adore J.H. I have read many of his works. I love his stories but this one I felt cheated. There was not the depth of character. I felt I didn't particularly feel very much of anything towards James True. Perhaps this was intentional, maybe as he was a wandering spirit there was no depth to him. I hope so.
Come on James get back to form!
