this rates as his finest story since the rats. a good plot , excellent story and great characters. the book tells the story of one mans death and his obsession to find his own murderer and exact his own unusual form of justice. he brings the out of body experience to a new and horrifying level. imagine you meditate, find yourself out of your body and then find your body is dead when you try to return leaving you to wander the earth as a spirit not dead or alive. this is what this story is about. After returning to his body to find it mutilated by an unknown killer he sets out to find out who and why he was killed. At first glance it appears to be the work of a well known serial killer but as any james herbert fan will know all is never as it seems. while investigating his own murder he is also grieving for his own body and james herbert skillfully takes us round the life of james true, describing how he was brought up by his overpowering, man hating mother. how he first started using his ability to take his spirit out of his body and travel the world. while coming to terms with his father abandoning him and his mother, how he grew up to be an outstanding business man, friend, husband and father. As the story unfolds you find out his life was not all as rosy as he thought it was, on his journey of discovery he finds his so called friends and family were conspiring against him without him realising. this is a classic story of love, betrayal, murder and revelation, with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and wanting to keep reading. the story comes to a surprising and fantastic finale as he exacts a bloody and final retribution and then meets his fathers spirit where he finds the answers to the questions posed by his early life and his mothers madness. james herbert is a master story teller and a true master of horror. read this book and you will not be able to put it down you will have to carry on reading as james herbert carries you around every twist and shocking revelation culminating in an unforgettable finale.
