My mum's mobile (Motorola C520) was about 6 years old and on its last legs. So my dad asked me to get her a new phone for her birthday. His words were, "something cheap, not flashy, she only wants a phone".
My mum is a technophobe and only uses her mobile telephone for calling people. She always carries it when she is out in the car and that is about it!
So, online I go and start looking for a cheap mobile. No camera required, no bluetooth necessary, she wont want to play games and download ringtones. So where to start?
First of all I looked at Play.com as I know they have a range of mobiles. There I discovered the Nokia 1100. As I read about the features I thought it would be the perfect phone for my mum in the perfect price range. When I started to find it by searching Kelkoo they came up with the next model, the Nokia 1101.
FEATURES +++++++++
It has two built in games - Snake and ?? Vibrating ring/alert Animated screensavers Stopwatch Monophonic ringtones Text messaging
400 hours standby 260 minutes of talktime.
The phonebook holds up to 199 names on the simcard and up to 50 in the phone.
The phone has a built in flashlight, which is simple to use, you just press one of the keys twice to turn it on and once to turn it off. I thought that this would be very useful for my mum when she is trying to find the lock for the car door in the dark.
WHATS IN THE BOX +++++++++++++++++
The phone comes with charger, manual and sim card. A usual you need to insert the battery and charge for several hours before use.
PHONE SIZE AND LOOKS +++++++++++++++++++++
The phone is very light and weighs just 86 grams.
The screen is 96 x 65 pixel and is black and white.
You can get Xpress on covers to change the appearance of the phone.
The original cover has handy grips on the side to help hold it.
The flashlight comes out of the front of the mobile.
COST +++++
I purchase an Orange phone as my mum is on Orange PAYG and only needed to swap the simcards over.
I purchased mine from The Link for £29.99. Delivery was free. There was also a cashback offer of £10 for trading in the old phone, so the actual cost of the phone was £19.99. This made it the cheapest place that I could find it. I did find it on Dixons for £24.99, but without the cashback this was dearer.
The Link's trade in was simple, they only wanted the old phone, not the charger and provided a freepost envelope to return this in
MY OPINION +++++++++++
As mentioned, my mum is a technophobe and I wasn't too sure how she would take to a new mobile. Would she have to be prised screaming from her old Motorola? I was pleasantly surprised. I nearly gave the game away as I had got a car charger for her and on her birthday my dad gave her the box after I had given her my present, so I told her to open his first!
She opened the box and was really pleased to have a new phone. I swapped the sim cards over and explained how the phone worked basically. She was really pleased with it, especially the fact that it had a little torch in it.
They were just off on holiday with my aunt and uncle (who both text) so while they were away they showed her how to send and receive text messages, something that I thought she would never do! Obviously it is so much easier to text on the Nokias than it was on the old motorola's which did not link to the address book!
I am really pleased with this phone. It is not flashy, it does not sing and dance, but for somebody like my mum, it is the perfect phone. All she wants to use it for is phonecalls, and maybe now the occasional text!
For around £20-£30 this phone cannot be beaten for a simple to use mobile telephone.
Advantages: Good value, in-built torch, long battery life, weighs only 86g, easy to use Disadvantages: None
...they sold, which was the Nokia 1101, for £14.99. With my £10 discount, this cost £4.99, which was a bargain. I have used the phone, but I mainly have it in case my other phone breaks, is lost, etc.
The phone has all of the basic features you would expect, including:
Text messaging (sms)
Vibrating alert
Stopwatch
Countdown timer
Alarm clock
WAP push
Games - Snake II and Space Impact+
Ring tone composer
High resolution black and white display ... ...is the phone, a standard Nokia charger and an instruction manual.
I find the phone very easy to use and I didn't need to read the instruction manual. Because it is not loaded with unnecessary features, it is easy to find the ones you need. It does also have useful features such as a calculator, alarm clock and stopwatch. I do not think it is suitable for someone who wants a flashy phone or lots of features, because it is a basic phone and is not ...

Advantages: Simple, Light, Big Buttons, Good for Everyday basic Use, Cheap Disadvantages: Not Many extras, Boring, Black and White Screen
The perfect phone for someone who calls and texts. Very simple navigation through menu and everything you would expect in terms on durability and lifespan from Nokia.
The big buttons make diallingg and texting quick and simple.
It is not so big that you would struggle to fit in in a pocket, but it's not too small that you would lose it down the back of the sofa.
It can also be found at very reasonable prices.
The downside for some is that it ...

Advantages: Many Features Including Text, Extras and Games Disadvantages: Not Colour Just Black and White. A Bit Plain!
The Nokia 1101 is Grey/Silver in colour, has a sleek look to it and costs pretty little.
The cost is probably due to the fact that it is not colour and only has a Black and White interface. There is no camera on this phone but you can compose your own Nokia Ringtones. This phone is getting old but it does have some interesting features on it.
These features include:
Messages - standard text messages with inbox etc.
Contacts - place to store and ... ...Tones - place to compose and listen to ringtones
Profiles - General, Silent, Loud and your own etc. Settings - phone settings, security etc Alarm Clock - sets the alarm
Reminders - reminds you to do things Games - Classic Snake and Space Invaders
Extras - Calculator, Stopwatch, Countdown Timer, Screensaver Services - Home, Bookmarks, Service Inbox etc.
Although the phone is getting old and it isn't in colour these features are very good and the ...

...everyone but unfortunately Nokia only allows use of installed only melodies for these functions. Vibration feature although existed in the phone's features is average and a call can be missed easily.
An interesting fact is Nokia 1110 costs approximately (£££)50, which is £10-£12 higher than its predecessor Nokia1101 and about £10-£12 USD cheaper than Nokia 1600....
