This is only the second mobile I've had. Made the change from a Nokia 3310 to this one last Christmas.
FEATURES OVERVIEW: MMS (Picture messenging) Polyphonic ringtones FM Radio Make your own covers Camera Torch Calender Java games Voice recorder WAP Alarm clock & calculator
STYLE: The coolest thing about this phone has to be the fact that you can make your own covers! The case is made out of clear plastic, both the front and back. All you have to do is find a photo or some wrapping paper or anything you like and cut it to shape using the special cutter! Alternatively you could make a template by drawing around one of the 3 manufactured hologram covers, although this would obviously take a lot more time and patience.
Once it's made, snap off the plastic hardcovers and place the paper cut out inside. I will admit however that the
back cover can be irritating to remove as the button provided can take a bit of an effort to push up.
A problem with the hardcover is that I've found it scratches easily. On the back in the centre it's especially noticeable as that's the bit that's usually resting on the table or whatever. Basically just don't put it in the same pocket as your keys or there'll be trouble...
Lastly, style-wise, the buttons are very interesting. Some would say interesting meaning 'stupidly designed', but personally I like the design. It's different to the conventional layout, in that it appears that there is only one key for two functions. For example numbers 1 & 4 are on the same button (1 at the top, 4 at the bottom) and 2 & 5 and so on. I can see how this could get annoying if the user has larger fingers, as they might press the top half of the button when they meant to press the bottom half. I don't find this a problem myself.
SOUND / MULTIMEDIA: There's a good spattering of polyphonic tones, as well as the opportunity to download others on the net. I find the sounds sound quite clear, however someone with the experience of a better phone who's used to Real Tones might disagree.
The voice recorder's good. Will record for 1 minute, and recordings can be set as the alarm clock tone, ringtone etc. Any recordings I have made have been clear enough.
I got my phone second hand so games might've been added or deleted, but I currently have Racket, Bowling, Beach Rally and Bounce. Bowling and Bounce are the only games I really play as the others are too fiddly. Racket (as you might've guessed) is a Pong style tennis game, Bowling is real tenpin bowling with scoring, Beach Rally is a racing game, and Bounce is a sort of challenge game with levels where you have to dodge a ball through various obstacles.
The radio isn't bad. A nice touch to the phone. There's also a loudspeaker that you can use with it (and as a handsfree kinda thing when talking on the phone).
GRAPHICS: I wouldn't call the picture quality of the phone dire, but it is definitely not the best. There isn't a zoom on the camera, so far away things really are quite far away when you take a photo. It's a good camera for close up portrait photos though, which you can then attach to phone numbers so when that person phones their picture comes up. Close up photos of things like flowers or whatever work well as wallpapers too.
O yeh, the camera has a 'night mode' which basically makes the image lighter. Works ok, but in actual darkness it makes no difference.
The graphics/colour quality of the games is basic - moderate compared to brilliant top of the range phones. But as long as you can see what's going on who needs breathtaking graphics, that's what you've got a PC for!
Lastly, you can set a colour scheme for the menus and borders to be - there's a choice of eight colours.
OTHER STUFF: The torch is good. Especially useful in the cinema if you arrive late and the lights are already off. To turn it on and off all you have to do is press and hold the * . It's bright, and it comes from one of the bottom corners of the case.
Calender's quite clever. You can view each month for, seemingly, months and months ahead (I got bored after going past 2007) so I dunno how far it goes. You can make notes with the option for an alarm for meetings, phonecalls you need to make, birthdays, memos and reminders. It will also display the week ahead with appointments and things with their times in a simple table layout.
There's no worry about whether there'll be enough memory to hold all of your contacts and messages. I think i've had about 60 messages sitting in my inbox before it told me i'm running out of space. That's enough surely. I find it so anyway. I've also got about 75 contacts in my phonebook, it can cope with that fine.
I haven't had any problems with the reception of the aeriel, and phone calls seem crystal clear to me. The battery lasts about four days I think, but mine was second hand so I don't know about a new one. But still, four days is good enough.
SUMMARY: A good all-rounder. Not the best on the market at all, as I'm aware many new phones have mp3, video cameras etc etc. But if you want a good value simple phone with the odd gismos, this is definitely the phone for you. It's easy to use, you can make it look however you like, and it most certainly doesn't break the bank. I mean, my mum got me mine on eBay as a very good condition second hand phone for around £40...
