I bought my 3310 about 2 months ago. What could have been a love story ended up in a disillusion. I’ll first explain what’s so good about the 3310, and then what went wrong.
Technical part – what you need to know --------------------------------------- A listing of some technical details and most important features - dual band (900/1800) - vibra-call - predictive T9 text input (in many languages!) - (alarm) clock - stopwatch - multiple SMS sending - 4 games - et ceterae… Anyway, it has all the features you need. Check out http://www.nokia.com/phones/3310/specifications.html to get the complete list. Oh, and it has no WAP, but nobody will regret ;)
The
love story ------------------ The 3310 is without a doubt one of the most beautiful mobiles on the market. It’s so stylish, every detail of its design has been carefully analysed. A real pleasure for the eye. Concerning ergonomics, nothing but praise as well. Comparing to my old Motorola cd930, and my girlfriend’s Panasonic GD92, the 3310 is really easy to use. Most functions are where you expect them to be. An example for many other manufacturers. But that’s not all, this mobile is quite small, has no antenna (a real advantage I can assure you), excellent sound quality, a very clear screen, and on top of all that an excellent talk time (2 h 30 min - 4 h 30 min) and standby time (55 - 260 h). I could actually continue to praise this phone on and on, but I guess dozens of people did that for me. So let’s concentrate on what went wrong.
The disillusion ------------------ I can hear you thinking “great phone, what’s the problem??”.
1) Well to start with, it appears there was a series of 3310 with a flaw. More precisely, a bug in the software. It only happens with software version 04.19. To check this, type “ *#0000# “, and the version will appear. And guess what, I am one of the “lucky” owners of v04.19. Hurray! My mobile crashes like a computer using Windows 98 first edition. A nightmare…. Moreover, it regularly shuts down without a warning so I can in no way count on it. I have to check every half hour to see if it’s still working. Of course, Nokia will give me another 3310. The only problem is, the 3310 is huge success, so there is no stock... And if that wasn’t already enough, there are many others waiting to exchange their v04.19. *sigh* So there I am, waiting for the delivery of the new 3310s, hoping that next week it’ll be my turn…
2) But that’s not all. There is something else about the 3310 that’s really a shame. And this time I’m not talking anymore about a bad version, but about all 3310s. It’s a flaw in the conception. You see, the 3310 is a brilliant piece of modern technology, but it uses this technology in the wrong way. It’s filled with the most useless features like games, smileys, pictures, a chat-feature, a calculator and even reminders… Geez, I wonder if anybody uses all that! Anyway, because the memory of 3310 is allocated to these things, it can’t be used for useful things. For example, the phone has no memory for phone numbers! You can only count on the 100 on your SIM card. Even my old Motorola could store a 100 numbers, and 200 in total. Same thing concerning SMS messages: only 10. I get really a lot of SMS messages, so I am obliged to erase them all the time. It’s really a pity they didn’t allocate more memory for more useful things... L
3) Finally, there are some details that could be improved. - Make the phone book sort names alphabetically. Today, it only sorts them alphabetically looking at the first letter. For example, it will sort Anne and Bart in the right order, but Bart S and Bart W appear sometimes in the wrong order. - Give it a Li-ion battery instead of NimH. - The phone is a little heavy
CONCLUSION =========== Don’t be fooled by the length of my critic, it is without a doubt a great phone. It’s just a pity the memory is poorly allocated. Anyway, I recommend you this phone, just watch out they don’t sell you v04.19…
