Full review
The Nokia 5070 is a smart reliable handset for people who prefer good value no-nonsense phones which are easy to use with a fair amount of functions.

Thats not to say the phone is old fasioned or lacks features, it is described by advertisers as the 'fun' phone, and comes with games, mobile web, built in radio, camera, colour screens, video capability and mobile internet.

But in an age where the new phones landing on the market are loaded with media centers, and the ability to act as a high quality digital camera, this phone stays basic in comparison and as a result avoids the hefty price tag stuck on mose new phones (shop around and you can get one for £50 on some pay & go networks!)

The 5070 acts as a phone which sits in the middle of the mobile ranks. If you want to avoid getting a phone that is overloaded with features, but isnt completely lacking then this is the phone for you.

*The Handset*

The phone has a quirky look about it, avoiding the strange futuristic designs which many phones are adopting, but keeping a fresh look. Its design is simple; with a white front and back, silver buttons and either blue or red around the side.

There is an infra-red reciever on the right of the phone, with volume buttons on the left. The top of the phone has an on/off button, and the the bottom is for pluggign in the charger/ head phones/ any aditional addons. There is a camera on the back.

The phone itself looks good, my only critiscism of the design is the back cover which comes off to replace the battery/ sim card - it is a thin sheet of plastic and can be a bit fiddly. Apart from that the hand set gets good marks!

Volume: 73 cc - Weight: 88 g - Dimensions: 105.4 x 44.3 x 18.6 m

*Interface*

The phone has a straight foward interface. The main screen has a picture background which can be changed. In the top left has a signal bar, the top right has the time and battery life. In the bottome right is a shortcut to access mobile internet (it can be activated by pressing the button neneath it) and on the left is a 'go to' button which brings up a list of short cuts that the phone can do.

There is a flat joystick below the screen. Upon pressing it you can bring up the menue, which is a list of functions (which il get onto later). You can either scrol through the functions, but each function has a number assigned to it which can be pressed as a shortcut.

The menue is fairly basic and easy to get to grips with. If I was to improve it I would have all the different functions on one screen (rather than having to scroll through a list), but there is only 9 different things to choose in the menu so its not to much of a pain, and there are number shortcuts to make phone navigation faster.

*Messaging*

The first item in the menu is messaging. The phone supports a number of messaging formats - text messages, picture messages, e-mail and voice messages. The phone can hold upto 100kb of messages, and the phone hjas a predictive text feature for text mesages.

*Phone Book*

There is an easy to use phone book feature so that you can add and edit phone numbers. You can pull up a list of phone numbers from the main menu by pressing the down button.

*Picture/ Video*

The phone does have a built in camera, but its not a high quality one. If you want to use your phone to make cinema films or take high quality photos then this isnt the phone for you. The quality is not awful, but its fairly basic. Im happy with it - I can take pictures of my friends, but theyre not photo quality pictures.

Its a nice feature to have on a phone and the picture quality is fine given that this is a standard camera phone.

*Sounds*

The phone comes with a built in FM radio, which can be activated with Nokia headphones (which are suplied with the phone). You can store your 20 favourate stations on the phone (if your fortunate to live in an area with 20 FM stations!).

The phone is also capable of playing MP3 ringtones, although iv never tried this because I dont want to fork out £3 on a ringtone! There is also a voice recorder built into the phone.

*Games*

The phones comes with 3 built in games - Canal Control, Golf Tour and Snake EX 2. Iv found myself adicted to Canal Control, a puzzle came where you have to put together pipes before too much water passes through (doesnt sound too exciting, you need to play it to understand)! I rarely play golf tour, its a basic 2D golf game similar to those alover the internet. Snake Ex 2 is a newer version of the classic snake game.

*Other Applications*

The phone also comes with calendar and alarm clock functions, to-do lists, calculator, stop watch, countdown timer, world clock and measurement/ temperature/ currency converter.

*Tech Spec*

IN CONCLUSION

My phone previous to this was a Sony Ericson phone. It was loaded with features and was great - but lasted 6 weeks before it stopped working and o2 fobbed me off with the 'water damage' excuse. I decided to return to Nokia as iv never had problems with theyre hpones.

This is a nice phone, it looks good and has a variety of features, but not too complex so there is less to go wrong than there is with a lot of new phones. If you shop around you can get these handsets at a good price. Ciao has links for a shop selling these at £80+, I think that is too much to pay. 02 high street stores have just got these in at £50! Ebay might also be worth checking if you dont mind the risk.

If you want something which has a nice design, and a variety of features - but most importantly sends and recieves calls - then this is recomended. Its not a futuristic device but then again you don't have to remortgage your home to get it.

Deffinately worth a try, especially if you can get ti for a good price.
