I've gone through about 5 phones in my time, as time went on, each one got more scratches and looked uglier by the day. But nokia have made this phone ugly to start with - and it doesn't get any scratches. I've had this phone for almost a year now, personally I think it's a great phone. It does have it's downsides, some say it's ugly, I say it looks quite good!!! The main feature of this phone is it's durability. You can throw it around, drown it etc. and it'll just bounce back. Another much underated feature is the flashlight, great for finding your keyhole in the middle of the night.
Funcitonality: It has most the mod cons, it'll work in pretty much any country (depending on network), always has pretty decent reception, with GPRS internet. However, what they forget to tell you in the shop is it's not full GPRS, there's some limitations + it takes a bloody long time to load. Colour screen is not the highest quality of all mobile phones, but is better than a lot of them. It has MMS (multimedia Messaging) but again, this isn't fully functional, no sound can be added. I'm addicted to the skydiver game that came with it, and the ability to download more is great, though pacman doesn't quite work on the small screen size. It has an infarred port, though I would question how many people actually use infarred, other than to try it out. I would also postulate the advantage of setting up the infarred recieving, then sending business card etc. over typing in data manually.
Another great feature is the calendar. It's a God send!!! I'll never forget another birthday again, it's so simple and easy to use.
Texting and the calendar are at the press of a button (left arrow for txt and right for calendar) which is an overlooked feature which saves time and effort - being a student I need to save both!
One cannot emphasise enough how great it is to have two select buttons and seperate hang up / call buttons. You can get back to the main screen anytime with ease by pressing the hang up button. The menus are well thought out and so easy to use.
If you're into cusomisation of the phone, the covers aren't that good. You'll have to buy official nokia covers, the ones from markets and other suppliers just don't fit very well, don't expect it to remain waterproof if you do.
It's a well thought out piece of engineering, but I'm sure most of what makes it a great phone is contained within all nokia phones now. One can compare it to a dyson vaccum cleaner - some real little, simple but helpful inovations instead of a bunch of useless gimmicks. It's kind of half way between a fully phone gadget with all bells an whistles and the old generation of black + white phones. Yeah the thermometer and calorie counter are gimmicks, one could say the flashlight is as well. But this phone is built with truely useful and productive features
Conclusion: You want a flashy phone, go somewhere else. You want a unique, useful phone without spending over the top, go for a 5100

Advantages: Almost waterproof, "droppable", a tough simple phone, nice battery life Disadvantages: Thermometer not accurate, expensive exterior covers that become less effective with age
