WARNING-this is rather long but I hope of some use!
This is an absolutely wonderful phone!
The 5500 sport is one of those phones you are amazed by! It has a music and sports facility which includes a pedometer (of all things) and is a bit like a mini computer in your hand. Now I'm not saying this is anything along the lines of the all singing all dancing N95 or IPhone, but for this money… it's well worth a look.
Amazingly the phone comes with a stainless steel casing which is grey in colour & is shock, dust & water resistant. Word of warning…. Due to the construction of this casing it is a known problem that the rubber keypad often falls off, it's happened to me twice and 02 have repaired for me on both occasions with no questions asked, but it can be a pain!
In Radio mode the phone allows you to see information regarding the radio station your tuned into, what's playing and any special features the station has (competitions etc).
In Sports mode you have an "activity diary", allowing you to keep a list of all your activities, duration, time and calories burnt. There's something called the coopers test (not sure what it is, but it's fun to use) & biking test. There's also a "tapping" feature, that when set up, allows the user to tap the phone while their set on sports mode and the phone will tell you verbally what distance you've done, the time used and total calories used. WORD OF WARNING…. This can be a bit of a shock when you accidentally tap it and suddenly hear voices!
There are more advanced features like a flight mode for use on planes, infrared for sending stuff to other phones and computers (really handy for using as an impromptu webcam) and an intercom system. I can't really comment on these as I have only used the very basic features.
This is all in addition to the 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, video and these have several different modes (including night mode).
And finally, the mobile being used as a mobile (phone I mean) is very good. Sound quality is good and the battery life is good if used purely as a phone, but if you start to use all the other features you'll find the talk time is greatly reduced.
Pros… great for the "I want it all" kind of user who's on a budget. Great sports facilities, a bonus if you're a jogger or walker and like to have some kind of idea what you've done (the step counter facility is great). If you're a high user the phone provides 4 hours worth of talk time & up to 270 hours worth of standby time.
Cons…. Keypad drops off! Talk time greatly reduced if other non phone features are used. Slow access at times to features. It can develop a mind of it's own and keep features open and running in the background.

Advantages: Durable, packed with features Disadvantages: mmmmm none that I can see
Nokia 5500 Sport
In a nut shell : Candybar type phone, lightweight, durable, packed to the brim with user freindly features, Good camera, good sounds.
Features : Well to start with its got a groovy wee torch, that you can turn on from a single button press ( no fumbling around in menus etc ). Its got Bluetooh, infrared, and a microSD memory card slot, which can take up to 1gb, although I have heard rumours that a 2gb can be used ( not tried it ... ...you are used to a nokia symbian phone then you will find your way round this phone quick smart. Yes the keys can be a bit fiddly but, what can you expect its a small phone and those little keys keep it small.
In short, the Nokia 5500 is the first truly durable and portable smartphone, but that durability inevitably brings certain restrictions with it. If the E61 is a Merc and the N93 is a BMW, the 5500 is a Ford Focus. ...

Advantages: A torch... quite a rugged build Disadvantages: KEYPAD DROPS OFF. Slow, buggy firmware, unpleasant keypad, missing essential features, poor battery life
A very durable phone - until it sheds its keypad. Then it's totally unusable. I had mine fixed under warranty. The rubber flap covering the connectors at the bottom also broke.
Now the phone is 16 months old, more issues have emerged. The text messaging application is so buggy that it crashes-to-standby at least twice a day. Sometimes it doesn't crash, it just hangs, and I have no choice but to reboot the phone. And turning it on takes about two ... ...ambulance (yes, it once delayed me calling an ambulance).
The key placement also means I frequently hit cancel by accident when texting, so I have to find my half-written message in Drafts. This usually involves the Messaging app hanging again, me swearing, and rebooting the phone again.
The Sports application can not be exited. It runs in the background draining power as long as the phone's on. The Sports feature is a gimmick anyway - if you're ...

Advantages: Loads of features, good camera, good sound. Disadvantages: Too many features, design and number of features rather than usability
...that this phone definetly puts Nokia in the lead when it comes to sturdy phones. But with that said I have to say I got quite disappointed when the paint on the navigation-key started peeling of. Though that is in no way fatal to the phone's usability it leaves the impression that there has been some cutbacks on the quality.
No doubt the designers at Nokia had a great day, when they made this design. The phone looks outlandish and like nothing else, ... ...for usability.
With this phone Nokia has leaped ahead from the former Nokia 5140i. The software is broader, the storage is better, the implementation of Bluetooth is great.
But the fact that the phone is less of a phone and more of a handheld device annoys me. For example turning on the phone will take up to a whole minute, menues are in so many levels, that you really have to use the phone a lot to get a hold on which feature is found in which ...

Advantages: Great phone with lots of freatures and good battery life Disadvantages: Can be slow sometimes when working from the memory card
...phone for anyone.
The Nokia 5500 is packed with features that you would expect in the very high end phones. It is bluetooth 2.0 compliant , a feature i use regularly, and it supports all the usual features that most mobile phones have nowadays such as GPRS and a camera(see specs for full feature list). The phones camera is very useful and produces quite good quality images. The only problem is at night the images aren't always great as the 5500 ... ...as good as the old Nokia 3220 i used to have.
The internet browser is good and displays most web pages fine, if a little slowly. The only problem with the internet browser is you have to specify exit in the menus to leave it not just press the red button to get back to the main screen otherwise it leaves the browser connected and drains the battery faster than usual and the only indication of this is a small icon in the top corner that is very similar ...

Supports MP3 and WMA files which can be downloaded to the phone via bluetooth, internet on the phone or connected to your pc through USB. With a 1gb memory card microSD you can store up to 750 songs which is plenty to listen too while on the move. If your own songs get boring after a while there is an FM radio which supports visual radio too.

Advantages: Can cope with tough conditions Disadvantages: Not a phone for posers
THe Nokia5500Sport Music Edition is a good phone to own for those who tend to put their phone through a lot. Mine has had to put up with being bounced around building sites, often sharing a pocket with keys, mud, pens, damp etc, and nothing has gone wrong with it yet.
The Mp3 player and sound quality are amazing and useful considering the size of the gadget and remarkably easy to use. THe torch is a nice considerate and very useful gadet along with the navigator, GPS system.
The operating system has the traditional ease of use that Nokia provides and has caused me no issues what so ever. It contains all the functions that I need although I do feel that the camera leaves a little more to be desired, but hey, a normal camera would probably have broken moths ago the amount of abuse my phone gets given.
My only other gripe is ...
