In a nut shell : Candybar type phone, lightweight, durable, packed to the brim with user freindly features, Good camera, good sounds.
Features : Well to start with its got a groovy wee torch, that you can turn on from a single button press ( no fumbling around in menus etc ). Its got Bluetooh, infrared, and a microSD memory card slot, which can take up to 1gb, although I have heard rumours that a 2gb can be used ( not tried it yet though ). A 2mpg camera and a radio and a pedometer (step counter). It also has a speech thing that narrates your text messages to you whilst you are out and about. In music mode you can tap the phone and it changes tracks etc. It`s the same in sports mode, by tapping it does various other things.
So, should you get a 5500? It depends on what you want. For me its absolutely perfect, while for others the features might be too much for them.
If you need an exercise tool or a durable mobile then, this is the bee's knees. It's been designed to be a jogger's friend, it has a music player and radio to keep you company, it's well-protected and durable , and it's also (as far as I know) the only phone with a pedometer in it. You don't even need to look at it to change tracks, alter stations, take calls or hear texts, so it's good for keeping in your pocket or clipping to your clothes while you concentrate on doing the fitness thingy.
If you want a smartphone like the N80, to watch videos and surf then this really is not for you as it does not have Wi-Fi or 3G and the screen is a bit on the smaller side than some phones.
This phone has a mixture of these two extremes, but you will need to decide what`s important for you. Don't get me wrong, this is a decent smartphone in its own right and it's better than any other durable phones at the moment, but obviously it has to be compared to other brand new models as well. The 5500 has been designed to work around you, rather than begging for your direct attention, and in this field it's absolutely great.
If you are used to a nokia symbian phone then you will find your way round this phone quick smart. Yes the keys can be a bit fiddly but, what can you expect its a small phone and those little keys keep it small.
In short, the Nokia 5500 is the first truly durable and portable smartphone, but that durability inevitably brings certain restrictions with it. If the E61 is a Merc and the N93 is a BMW, the 5500 is a Ford Focus.
