I am possibly the proudest owner in the world of a new Nokia 6100, on the Vodafone network. I say this, as last December I moved house, and my Ericsson T68 on Orange became suddenly useless, as the reception was about as good as a very poor persons wedding. A couple of weeks ago I went out and got a Three video phone, the NEC e606, from the Carphone Warehouse. Two weeks later and I was almost in tears with how useless it really was, and subsequently went back to the store, sobbing and irate, and they kindly disconnected me and gave me the Nokia 6100 instead. And it works! For the first time in 7 months I can make and receive phone calls at home! Now, I just need to make some friends so they can call me...
Anyway, I thought it's been a while since I last wrote an op on anything on Ciao, so decided to write one now. Unfortunately there are already 5 other ops on the 6100, so to make this one a little different, I've written this op in the style of Channel 4's Big Brother (how topical?). Hope you enjoy it!
Nush: What's this small, silver thing with lots of buttons on it?
Cameron: Ack! Noooosh, it's a phorn!
Nush: Yeah, but what's it do?
Cameron: Warel, yoo can meark coorls on it!
Gos: Mm, yeah, but can, you, ya know, eat it?
Cameron: Orrr Norrr! Ya mussenee eat it Gors!
Lisa: Seems a bit insecure to me.
Scott: Well, um, actually it is really secure, thanks to the Settings menu you can set a PIN code request, initiate call barring and a host of other useful security settings.
Cameron: It's gort a greet colour screen, and lorts of menu features, like text maresaging, corl registar, user prorfiles, settings, alarm clork, picture and audio gallery, an organiser with calendar and to-dooo list, games that you can downlooord orf the internet or GPRS WAP, applications, infrared connectivity and extras like a convertor and world clork facility.
Ray: Must have been loik really helpful, loik, when you were in Africa, loik.
Cameron: Orrr Norrr Ray! We cannee use mobile phorns in the Big Brother hoose.
Jon: Yes, well, it's, well, quite a fantastic technological achievement really, well. It's just 10cms tall by 16mm wide, features an array of polyphonic ringtones, has a high definition colour screen, features multimedia text messaging, tri-band so you can use it in the United States, downloadable Java games and applications, built in loudspeaker and timed profiles. More advanced than a Star Trek communicator...
Tania (Interrupting): Oh just shut up Jon you boring prat! If I could just see past this mountain of foundation I'd slap you!
Federiko: Well...
Everybody: SHUT UP FEDERIKO!
Sissy (Cries).
My opinion? This is Nokia's best phone yet, it's everything you could ask for, small, lightweight, well built, colour screen without slow performance and a host of useful features. You can purchase a camera if you're that way inclined, that simple clips onto the Pop-Port on the base of the phone, and of course an option hands-free kit, although the loudspeaker function on the phone does away with this somewhat. Battery life is excellent, with light usage it should last 3-4 days on a single charge.
You don't get much in the box, just the handset, battery and charger, and accessories aren't cheap either, with the genuine Nokia data cable weighing in at a hefty £50. You also only get one game (Chess Puzzles) with the phone, but you can easily and cheaply download more Java games with the GPRS facility.
This is possibly the first time I have truly loved a mobile phone (in a man to phone kind of way), it's everything I wanted and more, and with prices starting at £30 on Vodafone and free on Orange and T-Mobile (Carphone Warehouse - www.carphonewarehouse.com) it's good value for money too.
Sorry about the Big Brother thing by the way - if you didn't like it just click on the Unhelpful button below!
Thanks for reading.
