I've been lucky in so much as for a long time I've managed to get away with using my company mobile but a recent crack down by the boss meant it was time to get my own. I'm a bit of a gadget nut so this gave me an excuse to spend a lot of time comparing specs. I opted for Orange (mainly as their magic number scheme would allow free calls to my brother) and was very pleased to be able to get the 6280 "free" on a low tariff contract (£20/month 100 any network any landline minutes 100 texts + 50 any network free for life minutes).
I was looking for the nirvana of gadgets - the converged device i.e. phone, camera, video, mp3, radio, pda, computer, and games system in one!
On paper the 6280 has all the features I wanted; decent 2 megapixel camera with flash and video, music player, fm radio, etc. I'll go through each in more detail:
Phone: (mustn't forget this one!) as a phone it works very well, reception is good, the address book is clear and enables all the usual tricks; voice dialling, link to image of the person which appears when you call them or they call you. Dialling is easy and the keypad can be locked simply. I was particularly impressed with the handsfree function, on this model it works well even in a fairly noisy environment (which is good because the volume in normal use doesn't quite go high enough for me).
Text: The keypad is fairly friendly for text use. However I like predictive text but for some reason this phone struggles to learn new words which is a bit of an annoyance (I assume this is a bug in the software).
Camera: The camera takes great pictures in most light conditions and when I've downloaded them to my pc I struggle to tell them apart from those taken on my digital camera. Similarly the video function works as well as any I've seen but as you'd expect won't replace a camcorder! Unfortunately the "flash" is a disappointment; it usually fails to illuminate the subject and tends to cause overexposure (or whatever the digital equivalent is) on the bottom half of the image. Images look good on the large screen but scrolling through them is slow. It's very easy to link images to contacts or to use them for wallpaper.
Music / Media player: The media player is one of the best features of this phone. As a music player the sound quality is excellent particularly using the brilliant in-ear headphones that came with the phone. As with all Nokias the headphone connector is bespoke and fiddly to fit. The large screen is brilliant for video playback and I've used it comfortably to watch half hour TV shows. FM radio reception is reasonable; it struggles indoors or in built up areas. You can set music or videos as ring tones and text alerts (if that sort of thing tickles you). Although most menus on the phone are intuitive and user friendly those for the media player fall down especially those associated with finding files and opening folders. For some reason the media player often needs redirecting to the memory card folder where I store my files, even if the card hasn't been removed. On a fairly regular basis when I turn on the media player or radio the phone whites-out; the screen goes blank for a second and returns to the home screen, sometimes with an annoying screech. I believe this is a bug that can be fixed with a software upgrade - I need to take mine in.
I haven't made best use of the organiser functions, they look similar to those on other Nokias. Similarly I haven't spent a lot of time playing the games although Snake III has impressive graphics and is very addictive! I was disappointed to find that the phone uses the S40 operating system - this is impressive for a phone with all these functions but means there are a lot less downloadable applications (unlike with S60 and S80).
There are a lot of features I haven't really used such as the ability to make video calls using the second camera or some of the other multi-media tricks it has up its sleeve. This is due in part to the fact I can't see how to get them to work and also the high cost charged by the network.

...Sharp, Sony Erricson, Samsung and Nokia and found the Nokia holds battery life longer, gets a stronger signal in our area and the calls are clearer. My only requirements were for a camera and for a free phone as up to date as possible (I knew 18 months is a long time by mobile standards), this phone ticked these boxes.
It is a slide style, the front panel slides up a couple of inches to reveal the keypad, although many features can be used without ... ...the front lower panel. The main options such as 'menu' and 'vodafone live' are shown on the bottom left, right or middle of the screen and you just press the buttons directly under the option you require. Easy! The sliding mechanism is nice and smooth with an audible click when it's in the correct position, and there is a handy little 'ledge' just under the screen you can use to open and shut the slider although it is quite thin, anyone with large ...

The Phone
Having waited patiently for my phone, it arrived; I had not even seen the phone so had no idea what I was getting. I opened the package and was surprised to see this was a sliding mechanism phone; very similar to the popular Samsung models of 2004. Everything with this phone was a surprise because I had no idea of the features of the phone. The phone itself is about one inch wide ... ...are making leaps in revolution, Nokia seem at a very boring standstill. That being said it's a very simple easy to use phone that will leave familiar Nokia users without a confusing situation. 3G and the 3 network
3G stands for 3rd Generation, the 3rd generation phones began being released in 2002, and they take up less airspace and allow for high quality video signal to be transmitted effectively.

...a big difference from a Nokia 5140i which I have had in the past, where you need to push the keys really hard, but the 6280 is much better in this respect. The markings on the keys of my 5140i started to come off after a few months as well, but the keypad on this still looks as good as new after about 5 months.
The Screen:
This phone has a massive screen (320x240 pixels, 2.3 inches) which means that it can fit loads of lines of text on at once, ... ...(downloaded for free from the Nokia website), it is fairly easy to install applications, download photos, backup your phone onto your computer, synchronise contacts and calendar with MS Outlook, or load music onto your phone. There are also a couple of other features such as connecting your pc to the internet through your phone, but I have never needed to do this.

...many more games for the Nokia 6280, however someof them were designed for smaller screen resolutions and as such the games ran in the top-left of the screen whilst the rest of the screen was bright white.
The phone comes with all the cables and software you will need to connect the phone to any computer with a USB port. Alternatively you can use the Infrared option (slower) or the more up-to-date Bluetooth option (better speeds). Manage your phonebook ... ...The battery lasts a good length of time, providing you are not using the radio, music player, Bluetooth or internet functionality. Any of these things dramatically reduces the batteries charge. I find I prefer to keep my Bluetooth on most of the time when I am using my laptop as I have access to the phones' content and memory stick and can use it as a storage device, as well as have access to my phone book with the ability to type up text messages ...

A memory card with 64 meg (supplied with phone).
Internet access, where you can read your e-mails, send messages, search web sites.
... ...so if you've had a nokia before, so you know where everything is, however, if this is the first time having a nokia, you have to read the handbook to understand the phone.
Durability and Robustness?
My phone has been dropped down marble stairs a couple of time. When i picked up my phone, battery and back fallen off, there were no scratches and the display wasn't faulty in any way.

I was given this phone as a so called upgrade by orange. I've been using a Nokia6280 for the last 18months and unless your a dainty handed lady, the 6280 comes out on top in every department. Yes the u900 is slim, light, fancy looking and so on but as a day to day phone it's pathetic. There isn't anything it can do better than my old faithful 6280. In fact the 6280 is probably better. At least you know it's in your pocket.
Signal reception is poor too, so if you're in a "fringe" area avoid it.
As for the touch sensitive keypad, it's a nightmare.
It's a shame because it does look good, but fails to deliver in many ways.

Without a doubt the best phone i have ever owned. Fact.
I no longer take my digital camera out with me, the Cyber-Shot camera on this phone has a superb flash and battery life, and though the quality of 3.2MP is eclipsed by a good digital camera, the combination of features is not.
The operating system is exceptionally easy to use, and is stable, very much appreciated after a year with a Nokia6280.
The phone looks good, with a modern design, and has an abundance of features. The most useful being bluetooth, the 3.2MP camera and the good quality packaged games!!

I replaced a nokia6280 slide phone with this one, and this is a vast improvement. Good camera althought it has a bit of a learning curve to master a few of the features but is a pretty complete experience. I found the delays a bit annoying and the change from some of the standard "nokia" things but otherwise a sound investment. Does not feel at all flimsy. Bit bigger than ideal but the large screen makes up for that and the buttons are fairly compact. Easy to use after you customise and get a few things sorted that change. Great camera for casual moments and shopping. Address book could do with a "recently used" feature of some kind. A good standard reliable phone that will probably not break easily and go for ages and ages. ...
