I have had my eye on the Nokia 6300 for a while and a couple of weeks ago managed to get one free from Orange as part of a contract renewal.
The phone is visually very appealing. Its a a realivelty small phone (10.5cm x 4.5cm x 1.5cm) but is heavier than its looks suggest at 91 grams. About half of the front of the phone is occupied by the screen which is very bright and clear, the screen itself and the 4 way (joy stick type) button the 4 seperate menu and call pickup / hangup buttons are enclosed in a classy looking black plastic as is the top 3rd of the back of the phone in which is the 2MPcamera. The rest of the enclosure is actual metal which not only looks good but gives the phone a quality feel.
Before looking at the features of the phone it is worth briefly covering the user interface, which to me is one of Nokias assets as it is intuitive, user friendly and consistent across the range of phones. The menus are accessed via the 4 way joypad type button located under the screen, this can also be clicked to select the desired menu items.
Obivously the main thing is its quality as a phone and in this respect it is faultless, there is good clarity from the earpiece and there are plenty of options for dialing, you can speed dial by holding down the desired button (i.e. 2 - 0), acess your contacts (which can have mulitple phone numbers, an e-mail address and a picture stored against 1 name), voice dial or just key in the number. During the call the earpiece volume can be adjusted using the olume rocker switch on the side of the phone.
The phone comes a wide range of ringtones, as the phone supports mode file formats then virtually any music file can be used as ring tone.
Messaging on the 8300 is just a simple with the option to use predictive text, quickly insert a range of smilies etc.SMS, MMS and e-mail messages are all supported.
The next most significant feature is the camera, which is located on the back of the phone, there is no slide over lens protector but it is recessed to prevent it being scratched by the phone just being placed on its back. The quality of the images are good (which I would expect from a 2 MP camera) and it also has a reasonable zoom which is also controlled using the rocker switch on the side. There are also a few modes such as night mode and white balance mode so that reasonable mages can be obtained in varying conditions. The phone also has a the facility to take video, the quality is OK not as good as the still images (for space saving reasons) and you can't zoom in and out whilst actually recording.
The phone also has reasonable multimedia capabilities having a built in radio and MP3 player. For the radio a headset is required but this is supplied with the phone, tuning in is simple with the frequency being shown on the screen and presets can be saved. With MP3's they can either be listened to on the headset or via the phones speaker.
In terms of connectivity the phone has bluetooth and GPSR but no infra-red, this is no real loss unless you old phone only has infrared and you have no other quick and easy way of moving your contacts and the such like from one to the other.
There are many other features on the phone including a clock, alarm clock, fully functional calendar including reminders, events, stop watch, support for multiple profiles incliuding timed profiles which turn off after x hours and a special profile which disables all connectivity (such as bluetooth and GPRS) so it can be used on a flight. There are also good power saving features which put the phone into a sleep mode (so effectively the screen goes blank and the phone looks as if the phone is off. This helps give the phone a good battery life.
The phone is great for business or pleasure, as it is tri-band meaning it will work anywhere in Europe and the USA. All in all I think the phone is superb and would thoroughly recommend it.
