The 6310i is effectively the updated version of the 6310, which many service providers are still offering as a free phone. Esssentially Nokia jumped on the Microsoft bandwagon and released a product that wasn't really ready and was buggy as hell. The 6310i seems to have had most of these problems ironed out but as a result it often requires a premium payment over the standard 6310 to get it on a contract.
I upgraded to my 6310i a few months ago so prices may have fallen somewhat now and have been using most of the features on a day-to-day basis. To give some backround to the phone I've lifted the specs from the Nokia site and have added my comments where applicable:
Size Weight: 111 g Dimensions: 129 x 47 x 17-21 mm All in all a well dimensioned phone, light enough to go relatively unnoticed in your pocket but with a good sized keypad and screen, thereby avoiding the button-mashing you often get with smaller phones if your thumb is a little on the pudgy side! However, the phone is available in 3 colors. black/gold, silver and mistral beige. Never seen a beige one yet and the silver ones ar hard to come by, hence I ended up with the black version, which is OK but looks a little dated. I really fancy swapping the front as it would match better with the aluminium dash in my car. Sad I know...just call me a slave to aestethics!
Display High resolution, illuminated, full-graphics display Dynamic display layout which adjusts automatically for the best viewing. Up to 6 lines for text, numbers and graphics. The display is a pretty cool blue backlit affair with a very good resolution and contrast. Think this probably stemmed from the numerous after-market alterations for nokias. Text is easy to read and menus open and scroll well, especially in comparison to my old 6210, which was as slow as a ZX81. The menus are easy to access and are logical in approach, in addition you'll find that if you are upgrading, your service provider will also supply you with a new SIM card, nt sure if its a 16 or 32 bit version but basically this provides a range of different features that are network specific. On my Vodafone version it provides a further menu setting with options for traffic info, location services and network enquiries.
Memory Functions The following functions share dynamic memory (On the SIM Card): Calendar notes (up to 250 entries) To-do list (up to 30 entries) WAP cache (up to 20 entries) WAP bookmarks (up to 25 entries) Java™ applications Wallet notes for storing credit card info and account details. Call me paranoid but I don't feel comfortable having this ona phone when there is so much software available allowing people to hack phones.
The following functions use static memory (Stored on the Phone's internal memory): Phone book (up to 500 entries) SMSs (up to 150 text messages or 50 picture messages) Voice recording (2 minutes) Handy for recording memos and reminders Voice name tags (10 places) for voice-dialling. I find this very useful when used with the in-car kit. Voice commands (5 predefined). Someone may find this useful but I'll be honest I haven't really bothered with it. Ringing tones (35 preset, 5 downloadable)...Nuff said
Much of the settings and data on the phone is controlled with the bundled software, Nokia PC Suite. However, unless your PC has an infra-red port you'll have to buy the optional cable at around £30 to use it. In addition, the IR settings seem to be a bit flaky, mine seemed to work well for a while with my laptop but then refused to connect. I don't have any problems connecting to my PDA via IR. Extra applications can also be downloaded fom the Nokia website for the built-in Java system but this doesn't seem to be widely supported as yet.
Power Consumption Talktime: 3 h 15 min - 6 h (GSM 900/1800), 4 h - 7 h 30 min (GSM 1900) Standby time: up to 17 days. Without doubt this has been the best phone I'e had for battery life, it never seems to need charging. Usually it gets topped up on the 45 min trip to and from work but I can't recall the last time I actually ran the battery down, even over a long weekend.
Key features: Tri-band - world phone, WAP, GPRS, HSCSD, wireless connectivity via Bluetooth. These features establish this phone as a leading business communications tool. I've recently signed up for GPRS with Vodafone and so far have been impressed with the connection speeds obtained. Prices may be prohibitive for heavy use at the moment but for the amount I use it (downloading the odd e-mail while out and about) it makes good sense. I'd agree that the bluetoth accessories are somewhat expensive but for connectivity with other devices like PDA's and laptops it makes life a lot easier than having to balance the phone somwhere to get a line of sight for the IR connection.
All in all I'd have to say this is the best phone I've used for the range of features and would recommend it as a business users first choice.
Advantages: Good business phone. Excellant battery life Disadvantages: Now out of date as only got low res black and white screen.Size
I have been using the Nokia 6310I now for about four months for work purposes. For my current job I am required to do one week on call out of every four weeks and provide a service 24/7. We need a phone that is reliable, and easy to use due to the nature of the job. I speak to people around the world 24 hours a day, and due to a high volume of calls from ship to shore satellite phones, it really shows the weaknesses in the phone if its sub standard. ... ...a month on a normal month. I got a call out from Brazil, last Sunday morning at 5.30am and spoke to a guy on an oil tanker for an hour. Speaking on these phones is incredible slow due to the time lack and each sentence needs to be completed by saying “Over”. This does not look cool on the bus coming home….Me shouting then and saying Over every five seconds…..I look like a right twonk!. Since we have had this phone it has really made our life’s so ...

The Nokia 6310i is basically a sequel to the 6210, and latterly the 6310. The only changes from the 6310 are that it is now tri-band (handy if you travel a lot, less so if you don't), a blue backlight which is a useful change as well as a cosmetic one (the green backlight of the 6310 against it's dark grey keys made them quite hard to read in some lights) and the ability to run MIDP Java applets. It also comes in a variety of new ... ...difference, I guarantee it - Nokia must have really beefed up this phone's processor. There's a certain amount of slowdown in the Wallet and Java environment, but in normal day to day use, there is no quicker phone.
If you're a heavy data user, you'll appreciate this phone's fantastic data support. It supports GSM, HSCSD and GPRS and you can connect it via a cable, infrared, or Bluetooth. I've not had the opportunity to test it's HSCSD performance, ...

...the 6310 and the 6210. Nokia are committed to the chassis style of the 6310i as they want peripherals (headsets, car-kits, etc) to be common to this family. This is unlike Nokia but is comforting news for the owner of a 6310, 6210 or 6110 as they won't have to replace all of their mobile add-ons if they upgrade their handset.
The handset itself is larger than most in the current Nokia range but is well balanced and feels comfortable to talk into ... ...than the hansdets it supercedes. Nokia are pitching firmly for the business user here, there are no concessions to current handset trends like cameras, radios and the like but it does have everything that the business-person could want.
The 6310i is a tri-band phone, so those business trips to the USA are taken in its stride. HSCSD (high speed data-transfer) is a standard feature along with WAP, GPRS and bluetooth. There is also a handy voice recorder ...

...just about to sell my Nokia 6310i, ('cos i've upgraded) but i'd like to let you know how I got on with it, so here goes...
Cost:
When I first bought this phone, (October 2002) I paid £69.99 on an o2online contract, £20 per month. This was a good deal at the time. Inevitably, prices have dropped now, the current price is £29.99 (source www.o2.co.uk) on the same tariff. This phone is not available on pay as you go, so it's a case, as always of shopping ... ...converter on there (downloadbale from nokia wapsite), but if you want any more than a couple of other apps, like games, you're going to run out of memory. Petty, I know, but i'm struggling to find other negatives here!
Size-Put it this way, you won't lose it easily! It's certainly long, but I actually like a big phone, it goes from ear to mouth more easily (!). Just be aware, it's not a small phone.
Conclusion:
Well, I would really recommend this ...

Advantages: Very Easy to use Disadvantages: Needs Fitting to your vehicle
Once installed it is very easy to use and crystal clear quality. Compatable with most Bluetooth enabled phones.
I had mine installed for £35 and it took about 1 hour. I am using a Nokia6310i which together make an excellent combination.
A great place for more information is www.nokia.com and agreat place to buy one would be www.mobileshop.com
You can use most Blutooth enabled phones and is very easy to change from one to another. Your friends can use it whilst in the car with you (if needed).
Why get a fine, when for a small price you can have the convinience and quality of this product.
I believe it is compatable with the following phones;
Ericsson P800 P900 R520 T39T68
Motorola A830
Nokia 3650 6310i 6600 8910 N-Gage
Siemaens S55

Advantages: Bluetooth Connection, Easy Installation, Very Good Call Quality Disadvantages: Old Model, Lots of wiring to hide, may not be compatible with your phone.
This is the older version of the Nokia CK-1W wireless handsfree kit. The main improvements ain the new version are the call quality and adaptability towards being utilised for more of the newer Nokia mobile phone range. If you can get this older version cheaper it will still work well as I had it before I got the newer version. You may need to check that your phone will work with this version as that's the reason I had to change!
Using this kit I have made many calls both recieving and dialing. Both seem very good and with my phone the Nokia 6230 I have found that the call quality is excellent, the speaker is loud and the microphone picks up very well with the caller never complaining of road noise both town driving at on the motorway.
Voice activated dialing helps to call out as I do not mount my phone in a holder, prefering to ...
