Following a brief encounter with a Sharp mobile phone a further upgrade of my handset led me into contact with the Nokia 6820. My phone was free as an upgrade, however on a pay as you go tariff prices can range to in excess of £100.
My main attraction to the phone was the fact that it was available free as an upgrade, the way it looked, the QWERTY keyboard and the actual look. Not only does the 6820 have a colour screen which provides very good picture quality, it has a video recorder, voice recorder and a number of screen animations and screensavers which appeal to my inner child.
The 6820 looks the part, set out in silver giving it a cheeky glint. The picture above shows the phone in its standard position, however it does have the ability to flip open to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. Packed within the phone are all of the standard Nokia features and the size shows this. It is not the smallest in the Nokia family measuring in at 10.7cm long by 4.7cm wide making it just a fraction larger than the 3100 and weighs in some 15g heavier at 100g.
The phone has polyphonic ringtones and the ability to play real music once downloaded. In addition to downloading songs from the Internet, the recorder incorporated into the phone software allows users to simply record part of a song they like and save it as a ringtone. Combine this with the colour wallpapers, themes and animated screensavers and you have a phone that would please any fan of Nokia phones. The features are amazing and this is by far the most advanced and functional mobile phone I have used.
The phone was already WAP enabled when I received it and uses XHTML browser to view the web. I have always found this to be very fast and never spend more than 30 seconds waiting for a page to load making the downloading of tunes, games and animations simplicity itself.
The main keypad is the only real gripe I had with the 6820. It feels very rubbery and it can be difficult to know without watching every key press that you have pressed it hard enough to register. When flipped into the QWERTY mode (the picture turns sideways to enable you to read your text) the buttons do click and I find this a much easier way to text.
Some people have commented on the size of the screen and the number of colours supported. Personally I haven't found this to be a problem. Photo's taken with the camera are crystal clear and video clips are always smooth unless the phone is moved very quickly whilst recoding. The screen itself supports 4,096 colours within 128 x 128 pixels making it very standard compared with most other Nokia phones.
The phone is also Tri-band and will therefore work in North and South America along with Asia.
When making and receiving calls, the 6820 has a loudspeaker function which allows you to listen to the caller via the external speaker rather from the handset. The loudspeaker also enables itself when the phone is flipped into the QWERTY position as the earpiece is on the wrong side of the phone. This isn't a function I use regularly although I have to say the speaker is very clear and the volume controls would be functional for even those as deaf as a post.
Call reception on the 6820 is crystal clear and I always seem to have a signal, even in places where my Blackberry reception has died. Calls can be made quickly using the shortcut keys and the navigational joystick. The phone also has the appropriate port to support a hands free set and it is Bluetooth enabled to allow use of a wireless headset.
In addition to allowing SMS messaging and MMS messaging, the 6820 also has instant messaging and can be used to send and receive e-mails in the same way as a RIM Blackberry device. The messaging folders hold in excess of 100 text messages meaning that messages do not need to be constantly deleted.
The 6820 contains the same features as the rest of the Nokia range including:
Call Register - This provides a list of calls received, made and provides a useful counter to enable you to see how long you have spent on the phone.
Contacts - This contains details of all the numbers saved to the phone and SIM card.
Profiles - This allows you to change ringtones, message tones, sound effects and the volume of your phone.
Settings - This is where the time and date can be changed, languages altered and factory settings reinstalled.
Alarm Clock - An alarm clock which can get very loud, loud enough to wake the dead!
Gallery - This section contains all of the pre-installed ringtones, wallpapers and animations and all photos, video clips and animations are saved here and can be browsed via to selecting them.
Calendar - Erm……….it's a calendar where important dates can be stored with helpful reminder tones so those special date aren't forgotten.
Extras - This section includes a currency converter and a calculator.
Services - This section enables access to the web via WAP.
I have found that the battery for my 6820 remains charged for approx 3 days when not used regularly, however if you start playing with the games or taking video clips it does soon drain. The official Nokia website states that the battery when fully charged should remain charged for 170 hours when on standby due to a power saving mechanism that reduces power use when not used for 5 minutes. I rarely use my phone unless playing like a child so usually I end up charging every 2 to 3 days.
Would I recommend the 6820? Yes I would. It is practical, has a number of gimmicks that set it aside from other Nokia's on the market and it is far superior to the other phones I have used over the past 10 years. Most importantly the reception is clear, the software has never crashed and it has lots of things that keep me entertained.
This is the phone you have been looking for and is worth every penny spent on it. I have flirted with Sharp and Motorola in the past but you just can't beat Nokia for the ease of use of their phones.
Advantages: looks great, never-ending list of features, excellent battery power Disadvantages: Poor picture quality, no covers or software as of yet
...like the silver finish. Okay, Nokia also need to bring out some new colourschemes for this baby because, as far as I'm aware, silver and white are the only available colours. It also feels good; that is, it's light, funky and fits perfectly in your hand. Then you flip it open...WOW! This is a brilliant idea from Nokia. It combines the rebellious look of other sideways phones with the sophisticated feeling of a business phone. The full QWERTY kerboard ... ...around three times faster than say, the old 3310 with the predictably ANNOYING T9 predictive text! One potential down-side is the fact that in order for the keyboard to be compact enough, the buttons are reasonably small. Not a problem for me but older, less dextrous people may find it a hassle rather than a pleasure to text on this beauty.
One big problem I did find is that, although the camera is probably high quality-I'm not very technical but ...

...way it was presented: 'NEW! NOKIA 6820!' had it almost winking at me. I thought, "Nah", and went on my way. To my surprise, a few months later I received a gift parcel from this mate I visited that day, and guess what I find inside? 3 guesses.
I'm going to leave out the 'I was fated to have that phone' and get down to reviewing it. At first glance this phone is not very attractive. This phone is very light though. It's about the same size as the T610 by Sony Ericsson but feels about half the weight. However the phone feels like it was made from cheap plastic melted off from an old barbie doll then spray painted for that more 'professional' look. Yes, that would mean if you dropped it, it would crack, smash and dent very easily. ...

...- mobile phones.
The Nokia 6820 is definitely the best phone I have ever owned. Ok, so I've only had two, but that's not the point. I noticed on lots of other reviews for this phone, people just listed the features. I will try and explain what all of them do, to make this review more helpful than others.
Normally, when reviewing lots of other products, I describe how they look. Well, no need for me to do that anymore, as I have a webcam so I can ... ...because I only had a nokia 3310 previously.
The Main Feature:
The main feature of this phone is definitely the QWERTY keyboard. What's that I hear you ask? Well, its like the keyboard sitting in front of you now. This phone has the letters A-Z, the numbers 0-9 and a few other essential keys like shift, enter, backspace, space etc. I have to say, when getting this phone out in front of my friends, they see nothing strange. Then, I pull off the front ...

Advantages: It's a Nokia Phone Disadvantages: It's a Nokia Phone?
Let's be fair it's a Nokia phone. That's the nuts and bolts of it; you either love 'em or hate 'em! That is probably the most important thing, and personally I love it. The simple fact is it's no better or worse than any other Nokia phone of a similar age in terms of what it offers for the hardware. The screen is poor basically, 4,096 colours is not many if we're being honest. The video and photo capture is equally unimpressive, but then so are the ... ...address book is the standard Nokia style one - easy to navigate and can store plenty of info and numbers. In terms of the memory of the phone you can comfortably store all the numbers you need (with multiple entries for each contact) and room for a good few photos if you choose to utilise the camera (which is unlikely given the quality). Now the big thing, and what makes it a cut above in my opinion is the flip out Keyboard "gimmick" although I use ...

The Nokia 6820 is the size of an ordinary phone, but it's much bigger when opened up to it’s full potential as it has a full messaging keyboard. Advantages: Good MP3 player and Camera, Stylish Slide Design Disadvantages: Software faults and low battery life
As Nokia are renound for their durability when it comes to mobile phones I felt confident that my purchase of the 6280 would be a good one. I was, however sadly disappointed.
The 6280 appears to be the one phone that Nokia gave up on; by this I mean although various software faults were reported to Nokia after the launch of this phone, They decided that instead of improving the product they wrote it off as a bad job and moved onto the Nseries.
The software faults in question differed from phone to phone but in general the operation of the phone was disrupted by numerous glitched. Firstly, most often when changing profile, the phone cut out, with the screen dissolving to black then reappearing after a few minutes after deleting anything you were doing at the time. Secondly, when writing a text message, the phone would randomly ...

Advantages: Bluetooth Connection, Easy Installation, Excellent Call Quality Disadvantages: Lots of wiring to hide and might not fit in with your car interior!
This is the newer version of the Nokia CARK-112 wireless handsfree kit. The main improvements are the call quality and adaptability towards being utilised for more of the newer Nokia mobile phone range.
Since getting this kit I have made many calls both recieving and dialing. Both seem very good and with my phone the Nokia 6230 I have found that the call quality is excellent, the speaker is loud and the microphone picks up very well with the caller never complaining of road noise both town driving at on the motorway.
Voice activated dialing helps to call out as I do not mount my phone in a holder, prefering to keep it in my pocket. Connection is automatic (bluetooth paired devices) as I get into the vehicle which is excellent if the phone rings you will hear it through the speaker.
I believe that you can attach an external ...
Advantages: QWERTY Keypad, better screen resolution great battery life Disadvantages: Main keypad not very user friendly
I have had this phone now for 6 months, it was an upgrade from O2 for my Nokia6820. This newer version has a much better screen. I love Nokias and have had them for years, and this one is no exception. The menus are the same as all Nokias, easy to use.
I love the QWERTY keypad on this one, you flip it out and type away, great if you dont like the click, click click method of sending a text. The keypad also has a light to illuminate the keys which is a great feature.
It has bluetooth, email, WAP, blackberry and many other features. The battery life is great, I only charge mine every 10 days and it is never turned off.
Camera is good, and with the improved screen resoloution the pictures look even better.
The phone is a nice size and lightweight, it looks stylish and as it is my second one like this you can see that I ...
