I got this phone as a free upgrade on my Vodafone contract. Normally, around renewal time, I take a look at what handsets are an offer and set my heart on one phone in particular - I like to go for an all round phone that has one or two extra good features. 18 months ago it was the Sony EricssonW800i which was new out and had the Walkman facility which didn't prove to be a disappointment, and this time it was the Nokia 7390.
I normally go for Sony Ericsson phones as I've always had a good experience with them but a few things caught my eye with the 7390:
-Camera: It's a 3 mega pixel camera which I think is the higher end of what's readily available in the shops
-Flip Phone: I always find it keeps the screen cleaner - I managed to get a huge scratch on the screen of my W800i within weeks of getting it!
-Expandable Memory: It comes with a measly 128mb card which doesn't hold that much but I got a 2 GB card from eBay for under £30 which is an ideal size for saving pictures at its highest quality and a several albums of music
-The colour: I do like girlie pink things and I was impressed that Nokia had put a lot of detail into the phone casing. It does come in a bronze and black casing also which also works well. There are so many 'fashionable' phones out there which are very eye-catching but the specifications let you down - it isn't the case with the 7390.
Now, I'm not really one for instruction booklets, so when I got the phone I just charged it and explored the menus. I found it quite easy to find everything I needed to.
Compared to the W800i I'd had, there were a couple of things that weren't on the 7390 that I missed, such as the summary information it gave all in one screen (what time your alarm was set for, how much free memory you had and the percentage of power left on your battery being the most important for me) and the ability to post memos to the main screen so whenever I looked at my phone it would quickly remind me to buy more milk on the way home from work etc. I also thought that compared to the W800i, you had to press so many more buttons to navigate your way around as there weren't as many shortcuts.
However, the phone does have a few useful features that weren't on the W800i. I sometimes work from home and have managed to easily group my work contacts together in my address book - something which wasn't easily done on the W800i. I was quite impressed with the Nokia Software I downloaded from their site that goes with the phone. I can easily synchronise my contacts, calendar entries (so it gives me a reminder when I have a meeting etc) and when transferring music, it can convert it into M4a so you can get more music onto your memory card.
All in all, I don't think there are any major shortfalls with this phone and I am very pleased with it. I would recommend it to others and it has received many admiring glances for its beauty as well as its brains.
