So you’re on a night out with lads, getting lashed up, and suddenly this amazing (read "ugly, but beer goggles are on") women starts dancing with you. You think you are "the man" and you are loving every moment of it. Then in a moment of wisdom you pull out your Nokia 7650 so you can show the lads your catch. There the night ends. In the morning you wake up with a terrible hang over to find a picture on your phone of you with your tongue down the throat of a really very ugly women. What have you done?
The implications that this phone brings about are amazing. I mean you always have your phone with you, so therefore you always have your new camera with you. Bad move.
----====First Impressions====----
First thing you think, what with some of the phones that are about at the moment (Nokia 8310 etc) is, "oh my god, that is huge". Well in comparison to some, yes it is. BUT, do those smaller phones have the functions that this one does? No. In comparison to my old phone (Nokia 3330), it is lighter, the same length, and about one centimetre wider. Not bad really. Personally I don't like all these stupidly small and light phones, as I have big hands and find the buttons on them too small. The other thing that strikes you when you first slide it open is the quality feel of it. It has a definite clunk to it as you open it, and clicks in to place. Not like some Eriksson’s I have used where they have a very flimsy
flip down front, which I would be scared of breaking all the time.
----====Ease Of Use====----
Have you ever used a Nokia before? Chances are you have. If so, you know what the menu system is like (very easy to navigate and simple). This is no exception, however, because it is a much larger screen with full colour it is laid out in a slightly different way. All of the menu items are shown on screen for you to choose from. It has a four-way button that allows you to navigate the menu options, allow you to move up, down, left and right, and by pushing it in selects the highlighted option. The menu options are as follows: Telephone - Takes you back to the front screen Contacts - Takes you to your phone book Log - Shows all activity such as sent/received messages and phone calls etc Messaging - Takes you to the messaging option (MMS, SMS, E-mail etc) Camera - Takes you to the camera to take pictures Images - Takes you to the folder where the pictures you have already taken are stored Calendar - Allows you to view and set calendar dates/reminders Services - Allows you to use/access the WAP service Profiles - Lets you set up your own profiles for riming tones, vibrating alert etc Favourites - This is where you can put your most frequently used menu items, which is accessible from the right button from the front screen, saves scrolling through the whole menu system To-do - Lets you set reminders for things to do funnily enough! Connect - Sets the phone to connect to the computer/other device via infrared, Bluetooth or to use it as a modem for your computer/laptop Extras - Contains "fun" or useful extras such as Notes, Calculator, Converter, Recorder, Composer and Clock Games - As standard this phone comes with "Snake EX" and "Mix Pix". SIM - SIM card stored contacts, and fixed dialling options are in here. Tools - Phone settings and extra software management from the options in here.
As you can see there are a lot of options on this phone, which is no bad thing. It gives you complete control over everything you need, and in my opinion makes a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant or Digital Organiser) almost useless. You have every option on here that you need for organising anything from birthdays, to meetings etc.
As a typical male I chose not to read the manual, and really think that most people with a small understanding of electrical goods could use it without having to do so.
----====Picture Quality====----
Lets face it; one of the main reasons to buy this phone is to use the digital camera option. The resolution is 640x480, so its quite low in comparison to digital cameras on the market, but for the price and the fact it is not just a camera, I think this is more than adequate. I have used it while out clubbing over the Christmas period a lot, and it is great fun to be able to takes snaps as easily as this allows. Not only this, but it also has a mode called "Night". So to compensate for the fact it does not have a flash, it increases the contrast, and brings up some quite good results actually. If you would like to see an example of the picture quality, e-mail me and ill send you one. The memory on the camera is dynamic (meaning it is shared by everything), with about 3.6MB available for storage. This means that on the highest resolution it will hold approximately 60 photos. This I feel is the phones biggest down point. There is no way of adding more memory. Once you start installing extra software the phones memory gets used up quite rapidly, meaning there is less space for pictures, contacts, messages etc.
----====Connectivity====----
So far I have used the Bluetooth once to transfer a picture to another 7650, which took a matter of seconds and was very easy to do, and I have also connected to a laptop via infrared. The phone comes with "Nokia Suite" which is the connectivity software, which allows you to manage everything on your phone from the PC. It is very useful, and allows you to back everything up at the touch of a button. The down point is that the infrared is quite slow. It took about 5 minutes to upload about 50 pictures. This is not really a problem though as I just left it to upload while I was doing other things. Fro, this software you can also download extra games and applications to the phone, which is a bonus. I currently have "Doom" installed which is 100x better than snake for passing the time!
----====Look/Feel/Durability====----
As I mentioned above, the first thing you notice when sliding this phone open is the quality feel of it. It feels like something that will last for years, with a definite "click" as it is locked in to place, both open and closed. It does not come in any other lairy colours than the rather plain black and silvery blue. This is not a bad thing though; as for your average businessman this is what is needed. You don’t want to walk in to a meeting holding a bright green and yellow phone with a "funky" cover. As im sure you have guessed, I am not a fan of changeable covers, so the fact that it does not have them really does not bother me in the slightest.
In terms of durability, I cannot really comment as I have only had the phone for 2 weeks now. So far it has been fine, but then it should be! Ill update if/when I have any problems.
Nokia quote a standby time of 100 - 150hours, which seems a little high to me, but I suppose if you didn’t use it at all it might be possible. They also quote the talk time as 2 - 4 hours. This I think is realistic. As with any new toy, you don’t put it down for the first few days, so I was constantly showing it off taking photos of everything, and the battery lasted 2 days before needing a re-charge. Since then I have been playing with it less and it now lasts about 3 days before needing a re-charge. Incidentally, the charging time is only 1 hour 50 minutes from flat, so it’s no real hassle.
----====Cost/Value For Money====----
This handset cost me £50 on a new contract, which is the cheapest I have seen it for. This was with Orange. It was on a special offer, reduced from £250, so I made quite a substantial saving. The way I look at it is that I don’t currently own a digital camera; my Nokia 3330 was on its way out, so I killed 2 birds with one stone. Offline (i.e. no SIM card/contract) this phone is currently selling for £399, so it is not cheap.
----====Conclusion====----
If you are in the market for a new phone, and you want something a bit different and stands out from the crowd, then this is the phone for you.

Totally agree with you mate. My Nokia 7650 is the best phone I've had. The picture quality and screen resolution is top notch and there's no delay when navigating menus and typing messages like other phones have. It's a shame that mine has started to muck about. Probably because it's fell on a marble floor once and been thrown on to a marble floor another time from a height of six feet. :-(
Surprisingly it's still functional lol. Only thing I'm really annoyed about is that this phone doesn't support bluetooth audio (for bluetooth headsets) which would of been really useful now due to the handsfree law.

Also a proud owner of the meaty beast that is the 7650. I can't imagine upgrading again in a hurry, love it!
