I am a phone guru who cannot be pleased easily. I get a new phone literally every six months and I've owned a Nokia 7650 for just under a year! I was very impressed with it's functionality as well as it's superior menu system.
My phone fanaticsm leads me to be very critical and analytical when obtaining a new phone. Although my opinions may be personal I have had a list of top-class phones to form a good comparison.
The 7650 is by far the most user friendly. The menu is very intuitive and is not designed by a computer geek. The windows-style desktop look is very effective and Nokia should continue in this direction. Moving menu items around the folders was not always easy.
The menu option response speed was quite good. A few times the phone crashed and therefore a software upgrade was required.
The camera quality is really good and again the menu for the camera features was very simple and intuitive. The screen size was reasonably generous for photo viewing. Compared to the T68i which was released approx same time, then the 7650 is definately better especially since you can take photos in night vision (poor lighting conditions). you cannot zoom in/out flip the lense etc, like camera phones can nowadays.
The battery life was very poor. A bettter quality battery is something Nokia should have invested in.
The exterior of the phone was reasonably good looking but the size and bulk was a bit off-putting initially but you do get used to it.
Downloading option was efficient and user friendly. Definately there was a poor memory issue which Nokia slightly overlooked. The software applications available are a few where some are totally useless (like the torch application) and some were excellent (like the file manager and video camera software). A note on the video camera - It's a neat application which Nokia should have included in the phone (but I think it has something to do with the marketing of the 3650 which had this application built in and hence Nokia were able to sell it after they discontinued the 7650). The syncronize option were reasonable.
The general feel is very user friendly. It's really a colourful phone. The calendar is smart and effective.
In conclusion - When you use the phone for the first time you will not feel alien to it. You obviously need to learn a few options but you will feel as you've met the phone somewhere before - like you are familiar with it!
Is this the best phone on the market ? Answer: No, not at all. It was when I got it but now it's quite out-dated. The phone is amazing on it's own but not in-front of say the Sony Ericsson P800 which is my next phone. Having said that I still believe the Nokia 7650 menu system is still more simple and intuitive then the P800.
If you would like my opinion on the phones I've owned / Extensively used then feel free to contact me and I will try to write a "long-ish" opinion on them. Here's a few of the phones:
Advantages: Reasonable size,large color screen,GPRS,MMS,Bluetooth,Voice recorder,Ok memory,5way joystick,proximity sensor,video recorder,lens protected,light sensor,Icon base menu,camera,large selection of application/games. Disadvantages: No MMC support,keypad input problem,can't use with chinese & english,picture quality drop after upload to PC,mid-volume for ringtone,memory problem,dirt at LCD can't clean,battery life?
