When they hear Nokia, most people associate innovative design, high functionality and best quality. However, these attributes do not come cheaply. Seeing as I bought my phone in Germany, I am not really sure what it costs in GB. I just checked on the Orange Website and they offer the phone for £ 89.99.
◙ Technical ◙
The 8000 Series by Nokia is small and compact, so the 8310 is too. It’s 97mm X 19mm X 43mm and can be held well in your hand. As it weighs 85g, it is a little heavier than the 8210.
The mobile offers GPRS, HSCSD, W@p, Radio, Language-Command and Language-dialling, a dictaphone that also can be used for recording phone-conversations, a T9-dictionary, vibration-battery, a stopwatch (why ever...), a clock and alarm-clock, Dualband, a calculator and cost-control, IR-interface and games as Snake, Bumper, Pairs II and Snowboarding.
Standby is about 350 hours, talking time about 4 hours, though less if you have been using the radio.
Furthermore, the mobile can be individually designed with an X-press on Cover.
◙ Design ◙
Nokia 8310 is small and cute. The main-menu buttons are chrome-coloured and the cover looks as if it was made from three parts (though they’re only two). The front and back are seperated by a differently coloured stripe.
The display measures 94X94 pixel and is lit with white diodes. What I like a lot is the fact that the light dims automatically after a few seconds of standby.
I also like the semi-transparent cover and the overall look of this phone. It’s small, handy, good-looking and finds room in every hand-bag or trouser-pocket.
◙ Sound ◙
I cannot complain about the sound of this phone. It’s just good. You can adjust the volume also while you’re on the phone. The ringing-tone volume can be adjusted over the menu.
The micro has an excellent quality, and also using the headset that comes with the package is simple and causes no loss in quality. When using the headset in the car, my conversation-partner hears my voice and not that of my car’s engine. You can also use the headset to listen to the radio on your train-journey to work :-).
◙ Features ◙
I won’t describe features like alarm-clock, stop-watch and co., I think that all of you know what functions they comprise.
- Internet/W@p
The 8310 uses GPRS (3/1 GPRS slot) and HSCSD as well as W@pmode 1.2.1. It does not offer an html-enabled browser and cannot receiver data as fast as phones that have a 4/1 GPRS slot.
Reading mails is quite difficult, as only a few lines can be looked at at the same time, after that you have to reconnect and receive further lines. One reason for this is the small storage.
- Radio The Radio is a nice little gadget and I like it a lot. You can save up to 20 stations and listen to them whilst on the train via the headset. However, using your radio will eat up accu power like nothing else. Also, the reception is sometimes quite distorted.
- SMS/T9 I can only write about the German T9 dictionary, which is sufficient but does not necessarily recognize all the words which I’d like it to know. It’s still useful for entering SMS just that tad faster :-)
You can save your SMS in seperate folders, 150 all in all. However, if you have a folder with about 20 SMS, the loading of that folder can take a few seconds. I think it’s a pity that the phone does not automatically combine longer SMS which come in several pieces.
- Voice recorder Should you wish to record spontaneous ideas for further ciao-opinions, the phone will give you up to three minutes time. Unfortunately, this function can only be used via the menu and not by, e.g. pressing a seperate button on the cover.
- Profiles The 8310 allows you to create own profiles, which I think is very useful. The profiles can be named differently, for instance I made one called „Car“ where the ringing tone is very loud. Nokia offers profiles like „Outside“ or „Mute“ already programmed. Furthermore, you can download new group-logos and handy-logos.
- Ringing tones The mobile comes with 35 tones already programmed, further ones can be added. Vibra-alarm and ringing act simultaneously, which I think is good. When receiving an SMS, you can choose which tone should advertise the arrival.
The loudness of the tones can be adjusted in five levels, from quiet to screaming. However, it still sometimes happens, that I don’t hear the phone ringing, because the speaker was covered by something. That’s something that should not happen!
◙ Organizer ◙
The organizer offers a notebook-function. The notes can be assigned different priorities. I do not use this function but I believe that it might come in handy for business people. It cannot, however, be compared to that of a hand-held
◙ Signal-Reception ◙
Again, I can only describe my experiences with a German provider. The reception is average and not brilliant. I have experienced situtations when other phones (Siemens, Motorola) still had the full reception on their display and my Nokia would only let me make emergency calls.
When I used the phone in Denmark, however, the case was the other war round, so I am afraid you will have to refer to Britisk ops on this oner..
◙ Handling ◙
What I really like about Nokia phones is their intuitive menu. No hours of frustrated reading in the manual – pick up the phone and go! – Great!.
Still there are some items which I personally would have put differently, the alarm-clock, for instance.
Also, you can only assign ringing-melodies under Profiles/adapt/ringing tones. Why??? But everything you need can be easily found after two to three days of use and I personally prefer Nokia-menus to those of any other manufacturers
◙ Quality ◙
The cover is very thin and at the beginning I was scared to break bits off when opening it. Sometimes, when ringing, the phone and cover rattle, which I don’t think very good.
The on/off button is on top of the phone and extremely small and hard to press, as it sits quite deeply in the cover. All in all, it seems to me than Nokia was trying to save some money on the manufacturing :-( .
What’s extremely difficult is inserting the SIM Card, as the battery needs to be removed and that is not easy. By reverting to sheer force, I managed to pry it loose once and am dreading the moment when I have to insert a new card ...
◙ Summary ◙
I like the 8310 a lot. It provides all the features that I need in a mobile, and some which I don’t need. A more solid appearance would have been nice. The stand-by and speaking times are fine, and have never caused me any trouble.
What’s annoying is that this phone does not have a socket for an exterior arial, but by using the headset I can still use the phone in the car (putting the phone to the ear is forbidden in Germany when you’re driving).
Phones with older software versions sometimes have crashes. If this occurs on your phone, take it to a Nokia-Shop or your dealer for a software update.
I am very pleased for having chosen this phone. Cute design and easy handling still cause it to be one of my favourite „gadgets“. If, however you’re looking for a robust phone that can receive a provider signal almost anywhere, then you should look for another phone.
Hope you have fun with it am am looking forward to your comments :-)
Advantages: Small, sleek, a Cool Bug Disadvantages: Too small?!
...The phone comes with a Nokia battery charger for the Lithium Ion rechargeable battery and an instruction manual on how to use the phone.
-Cost-
Because this phone does not have a camera attached, or does have polyphonic ringtones, means that the 8310 is nice and cheap. This is perfect for people, who want a phone to phone, not take pictures, play music and save the world etc. I bought my phone from a friend for £50 about 2 years ago. I am unsure ... ...phone, it had the original Nokia fascia but was unfortunately broken. This was down to the lack of care form the previous owner. A new fascia cost £9.99 and was simple to fit. This lasted around a year until I clumsily walked into my bedpost phone first. The fascia had done its job and had cracked itself but had saved the screen. All in All the 8310 is very durable because there are no moving parts like these flip phones that break at every possible ...

Advantages: compact small size, easy, reliable, very cute Disadvantages: black+white display, no modern functions
...pure nostalgy. I've owned Nokia 8310 for quite a couple of years, I've bought a used one because new ones were pretty expensive back then and I only needed a secondary cellphone. I have never had a slightest problem with it, it's proven a steady quality performance without faults. I have the red variant and I was tempted to buy the other colour covers since it looks just great!

There are a few games and the FM radio without RDS but with good signal strength still. Wap (in GPRS) worked fine but back then I never used it. I would recommend this phone very much to people who like small cellphones and want a phone, not a small computer, just something that can do phonecalls and smses, is cute and reliable. I've owned 6 cellphones but all (besides the last one, SE W800i) got broken ...

Advantages: Absolute value for money Disadvantages: minor one being the size of screen and buttons
Attention all seeking one of the best discoveries in mobile technology.Well lets start with the piece. It is a small, sleek, slim and very sexy device.Let's face it the buttons and screen are small,so those that are all thumbs will need a bit of practice-but that is probably the only slight disadvantage. It is also very lightweight with a very powerful vibrator!(no funny ideas ladies)!
When you switch it on it welcomes you with a very warm
tune. That ... ...personally I like it.It makes a change from the loud and obnoxious beeps you get on other phones when you switch it on first thing in the morning.
As with all nokia's ,it is filled with features-the best one being that they are so easy to use even a five year old could figure it out!
The names feature allows you to store names as all other phones, but the cool thing about this is that you can also store multiple numbers(home, work, fax, etc) and email, adresses, notes ...

Advantages: stylish, many useful functions Disadvantages: very small - a diadvantage for some; pricy on pay as you go
...sending text messages on a Nokia is quicker and easier than on any other phone, and as this is what I predominantly use my phone for, this was also a deciding factor.
This is a very small phone, at only about 9cm long, and incredibly light, which may be a disadvantage to some, as it can be easily lost. Its lack of external aerial is definitely a good thing - it makes the phone look more attractive, and means it cannot get snapped off. I have not ... ...as a normal radio, so Nokia have done well here.
There is also a voice recorder, which has 3 minutes of recording time, which can be used for personal memos or even to record both sides of a phone conversation. Soppy, I know, but I've used this to record phone conversations with the boyfriend (I rarely see him when home from university, so it's good to be able to play back his voice!) GPRS is available, but usually only on contract. This is a new-ish ...

Advantages: Has a clear colour screen Disadvantages: Weird layout of the key pad buttons
I've recently just upgraded from the Nokia8310 to the Nokia 7210. So far i've not encountered any problems. (hope that i don't either) I really like the clear colour display.
It may be slightly bigger than the 8310 but it's a lot lighter.
My only problem since i've ad it is getting used to the layout of the buttons as they're completly different to any other nokia mobile phone.
I've always tried to have a nokia mobile because i feel that they're really easy to use.
Nokia mobile phones are generally the best and most fashionable than any other brand. They combine style with top technology. So if you're wanting a new mobile phone make sure its a nokia.
Make sure you buy a Nokia 7210. ...

i love my new phone its very attractive and easy to use it also is very easy to personalise. The colors are great and so are the screen savers. i like the downloadable ringtones and games, and not forgetting the camera which is good but could be of a bit better quality. before using the 7250i, i was using an nokia8310, the 7250i is a lot better and easier to store data on.
i also bought the data suite for the 7250i, once the pictures are downloaded and printed they are of a much better quality. overall i think the 7250i is a great phone and very easy to use. i would definatley recommend the phone to all users its a great all rounder. ...

Advantages: Stylish, good picture quality Disadvantages: No radio
I have had my E700 for about 6 weeks now.
It was recommended to me by a Neighbour who works for Orange and he was right.
This phone is stylish, the battery seems to last ages . The picture quality is excellent on both the wallpapers and from the integrated camera.
It is light weight, small and I find the predictive texting no more difficult to using my old Nokia8310.
The games are great fun. Honey Ball and Go! Hamster are addictive!.
Call quality is good. My Husband had a T100 which was patchy but this has no problems - crystal clear.
It is just a shame that it does not have a FM radio - like the 8310 which I do miss.
I would recommend this phone to anyone. ...

Manufacturer's product description
The GPRS enabled Nokia 8310 fashion phone combines beauty with brains. The small and lightweight Nokia 8310 is the epitome of style in mobile phones and the first Nokia phone in the market to incorporate GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) technology. It is stylishly provocative, taking phone personalization to an entirely new level with a tridimensional surface and translucent layering for a unique aesthetic look. The Nokia 8310 introduces a progressive design language, incorporating the latest look and feel in colors, materials, finishes, and design details. Front and back Xpress-on covers and a translucent window frame offer a dramatically changeable appearance, allowing more freedom than ever to personalize the phone exterior. Overlapping translucent surfaces and colors make the beauty of this phone more than skin deep. Shiny chrome surface finish on the main function keys, power key, bezel around the display, and battery release button afford it dazzling detail. It also flaunts a white backlight. It is urban and independent, focused yet casual, making it a phone as unique as its individual users. The Nokia 8310 comes with an array of attractive features such as an integrated FM radio and a dual headset. The new headset makes call and radio management convenient: incoming calls are easily managed while the radio is on and it is possible to browse the web, play games, write messages, and use the phonebook while listening to the radio. Advanced voice features include voice dialing and voice activation of the radio. The phone also supports voice commands to activate the infrared function and change user profiles from, for example, "Outdoor" to "Meeting." An additional attraction is the possibility to record voice memos of up to 3 minutes in length.
