I Learnt Something New Today..........
...........Sirocco Translates To "Decent New Shell, "
The Original 8800 did well to justify it's place in Nokia's Long Line Of Premium, Exclusive Handsets. But It wasn't quite the complete package.
From the word go..... Sirocco impresses. From inside the "Milk Tray Esque" Box and Packaging, Nokia hid a newly shaded 8800, and immediately noticable is the additional tweaking to the dimensions and designs, an improved version no less! Still slim and sleak, the handset seemed a little smaller. But one thing was for certain, the buttons were a massive improvement.... easier to handle, less fiddly than the 8800 of old!
And in keeping with the tradition of this range, the Sirocco feels robust and solid boasting a stainless steel exterior. It feels great to hold, and has a really smooth slide function which reveals the stylish and well constructed keypad.
I knew in the back of my mind all the Sirocco's predecessors (8800, 8910, 8910i) had fallen flat on their face in terms of features. I took one look at this handset and PRAYED it would be the rule breaker!!
And I was pleasently surprised!!!.............but not blown away.
The biggest step forward is the inclusion of a 2 Megapixel Camera, at last! Better late than never, a quality camera! However, in a fast moving industry, 2 Megapixel Cameras will soon be old news and 3.2 Megapixels are currently available.
Sirocco maybe a little late in this respect, BUT the camera is very usable, good quality and the video capture is here as well!! The only slight dissappointment is the small screen on which you'll be admiring your camera snaps.
Another leap in the right direction, the Sirocco upgrades the Music Player. Now MP3's can be listened to in the media player and not just as ringtones! Excellent!!
So, high quality camera, video capture and MP3 Player!! My prayers are being answered!!! We've got some good features, on par with a lot of other new handsets on the market, so with all this media capability, we needs lots of memory, right!!! Right???? PLEASE??????
Ah, sorry, no. To be frank, the Sirocco's Memory space cripples all the good points and advantages over the Original 8800. At a mere 128Mb, why did Nokia bother with an MP3 Player??? Remember this memory is to be shared between EVERYTHING!! Pictures, Video's and Music. With no possibilty of adding a memory card, you would surely be looking at at least 512 mb to use the features seriously.
Bluetooth functions, Speed Dialling, Handsfree Speaker, FM Radio all beef up the Siroccos profile and there is some extra reward for your money! Also hidden in the excellent packaging is a little Aladin's Cave of Mobile Treasure......... a spare battery (you can hazard a guess as to why!!??!?) a phone case, a diddy little Bluetooth headset, and deskstand are useful freebies for your Sirocco.
So, the battery life. Not sure 'life' is the appropriate way of describing it. Perhaps "Short burst of energy" would be more approppriate. With the original 8800 I was lucky to get a day's worth of use on a single charge. With the Sirocco, it's hardly any improvement. It'll only last longer than a day, day and a half max, if you DON'T use the MP3 Player, or even make many calls! On really low, leave it alone usage, you can make a battery charge stretch for two days.
Despite all the this, the Sirocco is going to be a really desirable handset. The price point is going to put most off. After shopping around, the phone isn't going cheap, free on approx £70 tariffs, and seems to jump up to £100-£150 on any thing less. But that's good news, it means not every Tom, Dick and Harry will be flashing there new Sirocco about at every oppourtunity.
And so we have to remind ourselves, despite some excellent features, the Sirocco still is there to impress visually, and it does that really, really well. You'd want to be seen with this phone, no doubt about it!! With that in mind, I've reflected that in the final score, people are going to buy this for it's looks rather than what it does, and those people will NOT be disappointed. But for features, your still going to need a plan B.
Advantages: Every possible part of the phone... FULL STOP Disadvantages: Not for the weaker armed ;)
I really liked the looks of this phone, but the price was a real put off... my boss at work had the older version and i really wanted to go one better and get the new sirrocco in black.
So with my ego in my hands i went and bought one. With the thought of the price in the back of your mind it all goes as soon as you see what you are getting for your money. I got the phone home in the most stylish box ive ever seen in my life, removed the metal clip ... ...fantastic, sleek tiny hands free kit that looks to cost hundreds on its own, a spare battery, a docking station that both charges the phone and the spare battery, cd's, free software and manuals.
I was really impressed with what you actually got for your money, it wasn't just open the box and ooh, a phone! There are a few set backs, such as its a little heavy, but to be honest, this phone makes me feel so good!!! Im not to bothered that its heavy, ...

Advantages: Stylish, Real Metal Case, Easy to Use, Nice Weight, Beautiful Sheen, Stands Out!, Disadvantages: completely broke twice in 1 year
I really like this phone, it actually feels like a phone! I hate the plastic, fragile phones available at the moment, there like toy phones, whereas the 8800 sirocco edition is the creme de la creme of mobiles available. It has a nice weight to it so it doesnt feel like it will blow away in the wind and its made of real metal not the cheap metal effect plastic most phones are made in. takes good quality 2mega pixel pictures which is great for when ... ...is vibrant and the phone itself gleams a piano key black. Really stands out but in a subtle way. the metal casing does get finger prints all over it but it comes with a leather chammy cloth to clean it with and it has a leather carry case to help prevent scratches. It can be easy when typing a text to accidentally send the message to the drafts folder instead of sending them but you can then go and pick them up from there, there not lost. the phone ...

Advantages: 1st class look, Stainless Steel finish, Scratch resistant glass screen, looks and feels great Disadvantages: Camera Quality (0.5 mp), Battery life is not good, No memory card, a little heavy to hold,
The best looking phone ever manufactured by Nokia, simply Stunning!!
Looking for Class? Originality? this is the right phone for you, Outer casing made from stainless steel and is laser-cut for precision!!
The cover is made to protect the phone incase of accidental damage which is soo does! No need to worry about the kids dropping it (you should!) because its built to last.
Also the screen is made from scratch resistant glass which is double protection ... ...which is fast and endless possibilities of games to download, digital music player, integrated camera, 3D imaging for enhanced graphics and a great colour display
But there are downsides to the specifications of the phone. Examples, Camera quality isn't that good (0.5 megapixel)! and the sound quality is not to the level it should be. The battery life of the 8800 is really quite poor.
A memory card would have been a great asset to this phone
Overall ...

Advantages: Good looks and feature packed phone Disadvantages: Slightly bulky but gets away with it!!
If your looking at this review the chances are you know your phones and are wanting to make sure you pick up the best phone for your money.
I am a bit of a stickler when it comes to phones and although there are many phones out there that can offer sleek and sexy looks (Nokia8800SiroccoEdition being one of them) there are non that can rival this phone for its functionality.
I admit it is slightly on the thick size, but still a damn sight better than some of those other phones out there, and the really smooth gliding mechanism which reveals the kepad is strong and sturdy and gives you an idea of the build quality of the phone.
I love this phone so much ive had 2 of them!!
Now the features, it offers a 3 mega pixel camera (relatively unheard for Nokias - except for the N95 which will have a 5 mega pixel camera ...

Manufacturer's product description
The Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition draws its name from the powerful desert-born wind that originates in the Sahara when a warm, dry air mass collides with the cooler, maritime air of the Mediterranean. The striking organic shape of the Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition references the inherent strength of the human form, a concept further implied by stainless steel polished surfaces and a scratch-resistant glass display window. And as it blows, the powerful sirocco makes its own unique sound - a composition from nature caused by two air masses colliding. With nature as his inspiration, Brian Eno, the world-renowned music composer and ambient music innovator, has created a unique 'sonic texture' that is organic, calm and highly evolved. It has an otherworldly feel - comprised of notes created by instruments that Eno has selected and 'synthesized' himself. The stainless steel case of the Sirocco Edition is treated in such a way as to give the device a unique sensual feel, which humanizes this natural masterpiece. Impeccable functionality is created through superlative craftsmanship, using techniques drawn from master watchmakers and jewelers. From the sapphire coating of the 262,000 color display to the distinctive slide mechanism which reveals its 2 mega-pixel camera, or even its extended battery life, every seemingly minor detail of the Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition is honed to perfection. The ergonomic keypad undulates like the glimmering dunes of the night desert, whilst the jewel-like navigation key shines like the brightest star in the darkest night. The Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition truly is unique, created out of the inherent beauty and chaos of nature and distilled into a modern form that is graceful, sympathetic and spare.
