Before purchasing my Nokia 8850 handset I was using a Nokia 7110 (and you will be seeing a review of that shortly, and it won't be as kind) and I really needed to replace it. Enough about the 7110, I'll save that for its review, onto the 8850.
The 8850 is a small handset, probably only three inches in length, though with the slider down it fits nicely between ear and mouth. The first thing you will notice about it is that it is a very pretty phone. A shiny grey with silver trim and a stylish black inset. The screen glows in a lusterous blue not the ever so slightly dull green that is so common and the buttons are smart silver strips.
Thankfully the performance matches the looks nicely. The lack of external aerial does not impare reception, infact the 8850 has the best reception of any phone I have ever used. The battery life is everything Nokia says it is and sometimes more and it recharges quickly too. Most importantly, for someone upgrading from the 7110 as I did, is the slider is manual preventing that flick action that sometimes cut people off when you tried to answer them. Also the sim card is held more securely than in some previous Nokia phones so you do not loose service as often as you might.
The profiles are there and the extra details with the peoples' names as well. Voice dialing is a pleasant addition and surprisingly good at recognising who you want to call. The wireless modem is there and still good enough for getting the occasional e-mail onto your PDA but don't excpect to go surfing the web on 9,600bps.
Are there down sides? Yes. The phone isn't WAP capable though this is no huge loss as WAP has failed to be all it promised but more significantly the stylish silver number buttons can be too small for their own good, making dialing a sometimes unpleasant experience and texting even more so.
On the whole it is my pick of the consumer Nokia hand-sets, unless you have money to burn on the 9210 in which case do so by all means.
