Having shopped around for a new smartphone for a few months, I decided to buy the Nokia E71. I had read many magazine articles which rated it as the Best Smartphone of 2008. I completely agree.
When you first switch on the phone, the wizard guides you through the basic phone setup, and before you know it you've configured the wi-fi connection on the phone and are surfing the internet.
The screen is big enough fr web browsing and sharp enough to watch movies. But after some time a bit of dust does get in under the screen, but the carry pouch that comes in the box does a very good job of keeping this dust out.
The keyboard is impressive. The thin rounded tops to the keys mean even someone with bulky fingers can hit the keys they want without mistyping.
There are 4 shortcut keys at the top of the keyboard, each of which can be set to control 2 different fucntions. One with a short presds and one with a long press. This make accessing your messaging, contacts, calendar etc...very easy.
The build in web-browser is a good effort from Nokia, however I would recommend installing Opera Mini, which will make navigation even faster.
The built in A-GPS is very fast, and the pre-installed Nokia Maps application is great for finding your way around new towns. A quick installation of Google Maps will give you world maps at your finger tips.
This being a symbian phone, there are many free and pay-for applications out there to enhance the phone to your lifestyle.
For the business user, the pre-installed QuickOffice is brilliant, allowing you to read and create Word, excell and powerpoint documents. There is also a built in pdf reader, zip tool and dictionary.
The battery life on the handset is excellent. With moderate / heavy use (repeated use of wi-fi web browing, 3G web browsing, A-GPS, playing games, text messaging, making calls) the phone will last 4 to 5 days, which is absolutely incredible.
The build quality is vey good, the phone is slim but heavy and doesn't look cheap.
The camera is average, if you want a camera phone don't go for the Nokia E71.
The built in radio works well, unfortunately you have to use the supplied headphones as an aerial, and the phone only has a 2.5mm jack input, not a 3.5mm one.
Browsing speeds over 3G or 3.5G are nearly as quick as wifi, so internet radio is easy to play.
This is a great smartphone, even if it is a little old now, it is still one of the top phones out there. It won't dissapoint you.
