"Decent for the price - Nokia Lumia 630"

Nokia Lumia 630

Nokia Lumia 630

General information about the phone/technical talk

Nokia Lumia phones are a brand produced by Windows, this is the format the phone takes. This phone model uses Windows 8.1. The screen resolution is 480x854 alongside an app resolution of 480x800. The weight of the phone is 134 grams, pretty light considering it is thicker than most modern smart phones (although is is smaller too with a 4.5 inch screen). It's optimum storage capacity is 8GB.

Look/Feel

Exterior Design

The phone comes with a colourful case already (it's worth noting that it is much more difficult to find a phone case for Lumias than it is other smartphones). They come in a range of colours; you can go with the plain black or white or something a bit more out there - my personal phone has a luminous orange cover which is extremely eye catching. The back of this case shows the camera, a small "Nokia" logo and the speakers. The front of the phone is completely flat with a smooth dark screen, there is also another "Nokia" logo printed at the top. There are two buttons on the right side of the phone, the lowest is the lock button the others are the volume keys (press higher on the button to increase the volume and lower on the button to decrease it).
Under the case

Take off the back of the phone by applying pressure where the camera is with your right thumb and use your thumb and index finger on your left hand to push the sides of the case towards your other hand. Although this design makes the exterior design of the phone more appealing it's extremely annoying having to fiddle about that much just to take the back case off.
Underneath you can see the large rectangle battery of the phone. By removing the battery you can access the SIM and SD cards which are clearly labelled. It can be a bit of a struggle to remove these cards because they are so tiny which is always a bit of a hassle.

Feel of the phone

As I mentioned in the general information section the phone is quite light despite being somewhat thicker than other smart phones. For me the smaller size is more convenient and user friendly, I can quite easily hold and operate this phone with one hand, some contemporary smart phones are more like small tablets nowadays.

Durability

Case

I'm the most careless person ever when it comes to my phone, I'm constantly dropping it and knocking it on things. Thankfully after owning my phone nearly three years I've noticed no major damage - this is without purchasing any additional protection. The only damage to the case as been a few tiny chips in both of the bottom corners which is pretty much nothing considering how much damage would have been done to other phones if you dropped them as much as I have this one!

Screen

I'm very surprised that over my years of ownership of this phone I have only managed to obtain one hardly visible crack through the center of my phone (it's only visible when you look at the phone from certain angles for the most part it goes unnoticed). I can't actually feel the crack when I slide my finger across it, I don't know if this it's under the exterior surface of the screen. Either way I'm not fully sure how the crack (or possible scratch) appeared, I took my phone out of my pocket one day and it was there- it wasn't after I dropped it or anything.

Battery life

The battery life of this phone is immense! In fact I never fully appreciated how incredible it was until I purchased an ipod and realised why apple users spend so much of their time complaining about the shocking battery life. I can actually go a couple of days without having to charge my phone at all - this is with average use across the day (I probably check my phone every ten minutes or so although sometimes I leave it for a good few hours). When I used to use it more often the battery would usually last for up to around five hours (depending on what I was using it for). Battery tends to drain quicker when using internet, talking on the phone, watching videos and using certain apps (mainly ones that require internet). Battery life will also decrease a lot quicker if you are using a lot of data all in one go. This phone has great battery life when listening to music, I can listen to music for a good three hour journey without seeing any significant suffering to my battery. If your battery is running low you can also turn on battery saver which helps prevent battery loss by stopping background functions which don't interrupt the basic use of your phone.

Features of the phone

Camera

5MP camera.
Lumia 630 only offers a back camera (no front facing camera). There is also no flash. Regardless, if you have good lighting and a steady hand you will be able to take a decent photo. If you take photos using "Lumia Camera" (a preinstalled app) you can adjust things such as white balance, shutter speed, focus and brightness to help you take a better photo. You can also edit white balance and brightness when taking a video.
Texting

The texts are really easy to understand and use on Lumia. In the original layout of the phone (you may of course alter this) your text will appear in a little box near the top. Your texts are displayed vertically in the order they were received (the most recent is at the top). Under opened texts appear in a darker font, once you have have opened them the text will turn grey. There is a two line preview of the text show below the contacts name. When you open a text they appear in rectangular boxes, your text are shown in a text box from the right whereas your contacts messages are shown in a lighter coloured text box from the left. This makes is clear and obvious to interpret and understand your own conversations. To type a new click the white box below your current texts. One of the funnest features of this phone is the sliding type - you can simply slide your fingers to each letter to spell a word instead of physically typing it out (when you do this a line of your chosen theme colour will follow your finger towards each letter). Although this is fun and quick it doesn't always spell your intended word. You may also use the "speak" icon to speak out your text and the phone will type it for you - again it doesn't always get it right.

Calls

The audio for calls is pretty decent and they're easy to access. When you click on a contact it will give you the opportunity to either call or text them. When you select call a range of features will be shown beneath the contacts name including "speaker" and "hold". These are standard features of a call on a smart phone but personally I think the way this is set out is very user friendly.
Apps

Being a Windows phone, you can expect to see lots of already preinstalled apps when you buy your phone. These are apps the company think you may find most useful, these include things such as weather, FM Radio, maps and notes. Some of the preinstalled apps can not be uninstalled regardless as to whether you use them or not but most can be uninstalled if you want to make space. Of course you are able to download your own apps by visiting the app store.
The problem with Windows phones is that a lot of popular apps are generally not applicable with your phone as they mainly tailor to Apple and Android. This is something to consider if apps are going to be a main function of your phone - you won't be able to download snapchat, garageband, instagram or other popular apps. However, Windows makes us for this by providing alternatives to the mainstream apps (for example you can download "6tag" which is basically instagram just with a different set out - you still appear as an instagram account).
Your downloaded apps can be viewed by sliding right from your home page, they are listed alphabetically.

Personalization/Organization

One of the key features of this phone is the advanced use of personalization. You can design your phone to be completely suited to you. You can more or less reorganize the entire layout of your phone. You can "pin" apps or web pages to your homepage and drag them around to place them wherever you wish. You can also alter the size of each app to make your home page look tidy. When you pinmark something you can remove it anytime by pressing an holding on it and selecting the icon that appears in the top right corner (a pin with a line through it). This doesn't delete the app, it simply removes it to the other page.
You can add countless email accounts to your phone - recent emails/texts/notifications/missed calls can all be quickly reviewed by sliding down from the top of your screen. This also brings up a bar which allows you to enter wifi settings, turn bluetooth on or off, access camera quickly, edit screen brightness or enter your settings.
In your settings you can further personalize your phone by altering the background, theme colour and number of tiles. You can also change things such as your ring/text tones, how long it takes your screen to time out when it isn't touched and whether or not you have a password to unlock your phone.
Kids corner

If you have children you can create something called "kids corner". This is where you create a personal homepage for your children if they wish to use your phone. You can put all your games etc on this homepage so your kids can play on your phone without them messing up your phone or invading your privacy in another way.

Quiet hours

You can set quiet hours on your phone where "Cortana" (an app which you can speak/type to to help you navigate things in your phone quickly) will handle your texts and calls and your notifications will be switched off. You can also personalize the message given to people when you put your phone into the quiet mode.
Navigation bar

It's worth noting that this phone is completely touch screen - the only buttons are the ones I mentioned earlier down the right side of the phone. This means that the navigation bar (which allows you to go back to your previous page, go to your home page or search something) remains at the bottom of the screen. For me this is difficult to see and locate as it blends in with the screen. You can alter the colour of the navigation bar in your settings if you have this problem too.

Quality comments

Audio

Through headphones the audio is pretty good from Lumia. However without headphones it can be a little annoying given that the speaker is inconveniently placed at the back of the phone; it feels like the audio travels out to everyone in the room before it gets heard by you!
In your settings you can edit the preset of your audio (ie adding more bass boost etc).
The sound levels range from 0 to 30 which is actually pretty loud through headphones. Outloud the audio doesn't sound quite as crisp and clear as you would hope past around the 25 mark depending on what you're listening to.
Touch screen

The touch screen is relatively sensitive although I have found myself sometimes having to touch an item a few times before my phone responds.

Speed

My phone worked at a much quicker speed when I first got it than it does now. This is most likely because I have a high amount of storage on the phone - it takes a painfully long time for apps to open. The phone sometimes crashes too if I click backspace too many times too quickly when it doesn't respond quickly the first time although that may just be my impatient temper making the phone slower.
Online browser

The online browser isn't much use for anything other than google really. I try and use it for facebook but it always sends half the screen off the page and I have to refresh it a few times to bring it back. You're better off just downloading apps.

Price/where to buy

Costs around £65 which is cheap for a smartphone!
Will be available in most phone stores, I bought mine from Carphonewarehouse.

Final thoughts/recommendation

As I mentioned, I've had this phone for nearly three years and it's served me pretty well. I wouldn't say it's outstanding but it's certainly a decent smartphone for the cheap price you pay for it! I have a monthly contract of £10 a month which gives me 300 minutes and a lot of texts (I'm not sure about the actual number but it's pretty high as I've never gone over it and I can text quite a lot sometimes). You also get a set amount of data with that plan but it's not really that much, I usually only use internet when I have wifi.
I would recommend this phone for anybody looking for a cheap smartphone - a phone they can use for texting/calling as well as social media, emails and apps etc - without having to a pay a ridiculous amount.
