So I decided to upgrade and this seemed like a good option. Its the first phone I have ever upgraded to without actually having a play with it before buying. I was thankfully releaved to see that it has the same easy use, plug and go logic as all nokia phones. On first contact my only slight dissapointment was the feel of the back sliding case. Whilst the front of the phone feels expensive and sturdy, the camera cover has a real plastic/cheap feeling about it. I was a little nervous about sliding the cover because with a little too much force it looks like it could come away from the phone. The cover again is a little bit of a distraction when opening up the phone to put in the sim card or take out the battery etc. Certainly something worth reading up on before atempting it for the first time if you are not familiar with nokia covers. The rest of the items contained within the box are actually very good. Although the headset is stylishly white and likely to get grubby quickly, the charger, usb cable and other little items make it feel and look like you are getting what you pay for.
The camera takes MMC cards which is a good solution and is an easy and cheap item to upgrade if needed. Its a little fiddly to put the card in, and you are supplied with a little adapter. Once its safely in you are off anc running.
Its been a little while since I had my last Nokia as I wondered over to the Sony market for a couple of phones. I was confident that this would be an easy and fun step going back to the navigation and function of nokia phones. I was slightly confused for a while with the setup, and I must admit that there does seem to be a couple of steps that just seem to add confusion to the overall ease of use. Its easy to suddenly go off and open or close the wrong section without actually realising what you have done. I guess this was just my lack of upto date nokia knowledge. A couple of weeks in I am much happier with finding items and actually am starting to think it was all in my mind.
Whilst there is a fantastic selection of applications, they do seem a bit slow when opening and closing. The games seem to be the worst but as I am not much of a gamer, its not too much of an issue. I really love the camera software altough it can be a bit fiddly if you want to try and play with the settings whilst in mid snap. I think that they should take a leaf out of the Sony book on this one. Most of the shots I take are quick and having time to change mode or frame can be taxing. I love the auto setting which does actually work! Sorry for the shock, but with little functions like this it is almost possible to forget its a phone. (I did say almost) Size is everything and yes its compact, but not so small you press 10 keys when taking a picture.
The battery is fair for life length although too much playing with the software really zaps the juice. The recharge is speedy so you are up and running again in no time.
As you can probably guess I love using my phone for taking pictures, however I was dissapointed to find out that the usb connection just doe not work with my G4 powerbook. Gutted! Thankfully they had the sense to keep the ever handy bluetooth. This does work and is almost as good. One day someone with invent a phone that hard wires with my mac..... Only noticed on this model that there is no infra red anymore. Not that I ever used it but I miss it now its gone.
So overall a fair attempt by Nokia to throw together some fab software, a decent amount of space for songs or images and some interesting navigational buttons. Yes a little plastic, but still something to turn heads if for no other reason than it looks sexy.
