I have owned many mobile phones over the years, all with unique features and selling points. In my opinion the N95 from Nokia represents a step forward in mobiletelecommunication design.
Being young, male, and relatively technilogically savvy, mobile phones must have a certain something to appeal to me, and I'm glad to say that this model has it in spades.
It is over a year since I purchased the model, and I have waited until now to write a review of the phone in order to ensure that I have a thorough understanding of it.
Look and Feel
The phone is a step away from the standard typical Nokia designs and embraces a more modern appearance. The surrounding casing
of the screen itself is decked out in glossy black and the main phone console itself is designed in a stylish black plastic. The buttons are tactile and easy to press, rarely is the wrong one selected by mistake.
Some may feel the phone to be too large for them, indeed it is a large phone with ccompared to some models, but as someone who likes to be able to grab the handset easily in my pocket, this is a benefit rather than a negative point.
Durability and Robustness
As said above I have had this phone for a good while, during this time it has been
-dropped numerous times onto the floor in my house. -stepped on -dropped from a second story window -thrown at my head by an over enthusistic girlfriend run over my a 3 year old on a tricycle
In all honesty the phone is built to last. After all of the above, and a year's worth of general wear and tear there is no visible damage to the handset whatsoever, neither to the glass nor the casing. I can't give it a higher score in this area.
This is one area where I feel the phone lets itself down. When first purchased the phone would last roughly 5-7 days when used regularly over this period.
I have found recently however that the abttery life has dropped considerably, now lasting on average 2 days. I have taken to charging the handset overnight to avoid unannounced loss of power. For myself, this is not too much of a problem, and only a minor inconvenience. However someone who is looking to use the handset without charging for an extended period of time may wish to consider alternatives.
Range of Features
One this to remeber when looking at the features offered is that this is a very different design to the so-called SMART phones recently released in the UK. There is no denying that compared to the i-Phone and similar models the N95 is somewhat lacking. However taking the phone on it's own merits shows that the ddiverse range of features offerred are more than enough to meet even the toughest requirements of alike consumers.
The phone comes with a built in 5 Megapixel Camera as standard. This camera offers brilliant picture quality, indeed better than my own camera. It also comes with a front facing camera for video conferencing/Instant messaging. It is worth noting here that the video capability of the main camera is very high, and while you cannot use the zoom feature while filming, you are able to record up to 1 hour of footage at a time.
The phone's contact list is as you would expect of nokia these days, easy to use and with minimum fuss. The sms system is also great on this model.
Music is transferred across very easily, as easily as you would do so with a USB memory stick, however it is somewhat limited as to the format of music, you may wish to check this out if you use anything other than WMA or MP3. Conversion is possible however for incompatible media.
My phone came with a free copy of Spiderman 3 pre installed on the phone courtesy of O2. The quality of this on such a small screen is breathtaking, and having seen the i-phone in action on numerous occasions, the N95 holds up admirably.
One much lauded feature of this phone is the Nokia Maps app, the built in GPS system. One has to pay a small surcharge to use the navigation part of this system, however the actual maps can be viwed at no extra cost. This is not a system I have used greatly, not driving, however I have found it useful when walking trying to find a street or a building.
Other applications are as you would expect and can be viewed on Nokia's website.
Conclusion
In conclusion I am very happy with my current handset and the features it offers to me. While I may when renewal is due change a swish touch screen phone, I have no desire to do so at this time. This phone more than caters to my everyday needs and I hope it shall continue to do so for some time to come.
