I find Nora Roberts an unusual author. Some of her books are the best I've ever read - whereas others are so hard to get into that they remain unfinished months after I've started them. Also, I find some of her books are so obvious and predictable, while others keep me guessing right until the end of the book. This book - Northern Lights - is one of the latter. It's full to the brim with romance, passion, suspense and even a bit of gore added in. It kept me guessing until right near the end. This is definitely one of my favourite Nora Roberts books.

The story is about a big city police officer called Nate Burke. Nate is riddled with guilt after his partner and friend was killed in front of him while he could do nothing.
When the book starts, we see Nate having a last ditch attempt at saving his sanity by relocating to a tiny, remote Alaskan town called Lunacy. He feels that by moving here and taking up the position of Chief Of Police in Lunacy, he might just find some kind of solace.
While Nate is battling his inner demons, he also has to cope with the fact that he is an Outsider, and has to gain trust from the locals. They don't welcome newcomers very well, and Nate has to try very hard to bring them round to his way of thinking.
Gradually they start to accept him, however, when a corpse is found on the local mountain 'No Name', Nate begins to suspect anyone and everyone, which puts him back to being the Outsider. Only Meg, the local pilot, can help him feel more at home.
As Nate starts to put pieces of the puzzle together, someone is out to stop him getting any closer to finding the killer.
I have not given anything away that is not mentioned on the back of the book, and as I said, this book has the right mix of passion, romance, mystery & suspense. It's a great read and a real insight into remote Alaskan life - a place where temperatures fall below zero and darkness falls in mid afternoon, and Outsiders can only ever be Outsiders.
If you do get to read this, I really hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Advantages: A good length Disadvantages: Hard to put down
This would have to be my favourite of the stand alone Nora Roberts books. I thoroughly enjoyed her description of the Alaskan landscape. Her main female character in this book is a wonderfully independent and feisty lady. The main male character is new to this environment, and seeking to forget out a bad experience.
There is a good element of mystery interwoven into the background, and intriguingly written through a series of flashbacks. The suspense ... ...left guessing as to who did it.
I really enjoyed the layers of detail that were added to this book - you begin to feel what it is like to live through an Alaskan winter. I have already reread this book several times as I enjoyed it so much! ...

It is everybody's right to know where they were born and whom their parents are, but not everybody knows these things. There are people who are adopted at a very young age who don't find it out until they are adults, things are changing and people are more open about adoption and chosen rather than born children but it is still an interesting subject and there are a lot of books around it. Then there are stolen children. I hope no one knows of a snatched baby, I don't, so this book held no real sadness for me or stirred up any emotions, I just enjoyed the story.
How I came across this author.
On holiday last December I wanted something to read and bought a book by an author I hadn't heard of before. It was called NorthernLights and was the newest thriller/mystery by NoraRoberts. I read that book, then my husband read it ...
Lunacy, Alaska - population 506 - is Nate Burke's last chance. As a Baltimore cop, he'd watched his partner die - and the guilt still haunts him. Maybe serving as Chief of Police in this tiny, remote town, where darkness falls by midafternoon and temperatures fall to zero and below, will bring some kind of solace. See all Product Description
