As a computer student, it is frustrating when avoidable events occur causing you to spend hours solving them. Virus infection is one of such problems.
Viruses can be spread through file sharing, email and the visiting of infected web sites. The most frustrating problem with viruses are that the work your doing either gets infected and/or your system slows down preventing you from working or playing your favourite games.
Originally, I used Trend Micro’s PC-Cillin 98. This software is a very good antivirus – or so I thought. After updates to the scan engine and pattern file, I decided to try PC-Cillin 2000. These two antivirus applications both detected a wide range of viruses, worms and Trojans, and contained protection against virus infection through the use of the Internet. However, they both have their problems. PC-Cillin 2000 does not have great stability when updated to the latest scan engine and both do not detect a few common viruses.

Norton Antivirus is fairly easy to install. Symantec provide a wizard, which guides the user through the installation process. It allows the user to set regular system scans and updates. The setting of the scans and updates does not provide flexibility for the less experienced user, defaulting to a regular system scan on Fridays. Every time the user logs on and on every five minutes after 22:17 each day, LiveUpdate searches for new virus definitions, provided an active Internet connection is available.
Although LiveUpdate automatically checks for the latest virus definitions, updates to the program will not be obtained and so it is recommended that the user checks manually using the LiveUpdate feature every once in a while.
It also provides an auto-protect feature, which scans all files as they are accessed preventing infected files from being run. This is very useful as it prevents the virus from quickly spreading around your machine. The antivirus software is also integrated with Windows Explorer, so the user can scan file(s) from a menu choice.
With the standard email scanning feature, all of your incoming and outgoing mail is checked for viruses minimising the risk of getting viruses and passing them on.
Once installed, Norton Antivirus 2002 provides excellent defence against viruses without the need to make lots of adjustments to the settings.
As with all software, the more you use it the more features you will gain knowledge of and how to use its functions will become easier. In case of any problems with the program’s features there is a help system incorporated.
In the event, that the application finds a virus on your machine, it will provide a list of options allowing the user to choose the course of action. If the file cannot be ‘cleaned’ then the file can be deleted, or quarantined.
When a file is quarantined, it is stored preventing all access to it. At the user’s discretion the file can be checked at a later date or the file can be submitted to Symantec for examination.
Overall, this application has exceeded my expectations. It is easy to use, whilst providing excellent protection for my computer, which is connected to the Internet for long periods of time. It is available from various stores for approximately £37.
Advantages: Ease of use and effectiveness Disadvantages: Payment for updates after 1st year
Before I got this my computer was really not working very well. I had loads of viruses that I thought were just the computer working badly. But what exactly is a virus?
A virus is a program that is specifically designed to be a parasite (a leach basically). It will operate without you meaning to download or install it. It will do what its instructed to do. This can be to wipe your hard-drive or just to fill your computer with porn.
There are several different types. A macro ...

I bought myself a new Dell PC in October of last year, and the last thing I want to happen is to destroy all my records with some stupid virus, that is some idiots idea of a great joke.
I bought the programme over the web from a site called GoBuy for only £39.50, and this also includes any new updates for a whole year free of charge, which I can download from the Norton website. It does take just a little longer to send your emails when you are running Norton, but it’s well worth ...

Norton Antivirus does both of these jobs admirably. It has never failed to inform me of viruses from infected files and emails and does a good job of keeping itself updated when I connect to the internet.
