The question we must ask ourselves : Is this version something new so that we need to upgrade from 2003 or previous versions?
Yes

I'm a casual PC user ... ...This sheet explains about how Norton Antivirus-2004 must be activated, using a similar way like Windows Xp and Windows Office XP edition.
The Manual was English and explained the various steps of how to install and configure Norton Antivirus and what the program is capable of. Funny enough although "User's Guide" which is written on the front is translated in various languages, the manual itself is only english.

Yes
**************** I'm a casual PC user and I realized before long that sooner or later I would be catching virii if I continued to download software from shady looking sites. Free Antivirus programs were no good, updates were seldom and I rely on the Free Lunch Principle (There is no such thing as a free lunch). Thus a commercial program must be bought, and due to symantec being my favourite company in the security buisness, I set off to get one.
While trailing around the various computing shops, I found the rare gem gleaming amongst other programs on the shelves. The Yellow packaging with the large red logo and the symantec symbol in the corner. The front cover was already boasting at what the program could do, and the back side contained some valuable information about the product. The requirements were listed on the top red "flap".
I unpacked the box to find a packaged dvd looking similar to the box, a manual and a small sheet labeled "Important". This sheet explains about how Norton Antivirus-2004 must be activated, using a similar way like Windows Xp and Windows Office XP edition.
The Manual was English and explained the various steps of how to install and configure Norton Antivirus and what the program is capable of. Funny enough although "User's Guide" which is written on the front is translated in various languages, the manual itself is only english.
After going through the simple guided installation and activating the program, u can already access the simple to navigate Control Center. The most important tasks are listed with a red cross to allow you to see what jobs still need doing. If any vital tasks are still left open (Liveupdate or Full System Scan), Norton antivirus will show this in the System Status.
Navigating is easy, the Left toolbar shows the 3 major parts "Status, Scan for Viruses and Reports". Status is the main screen, showing your subscription details and features, Scan for Viruses is pretty self-forward and features various tasks to scan the computer. The "Reports" allow you to visit the virus encylopedia (requires internet), Quarantined Items and an Activity Log.
The Options button next to the Liveupdate in the left corner of the program, features the major options of the program, allowing you to tweak it to especially suit your needs.
**************** It works effectivly, being able to scan compressed files and is always running in the background. When it finds malicious code, it removes it automatically. It detects many virii in instant messengers, email and various other Internet downloads.
What does this version offer to us, via the previous versions? It's ability to scan for Spyware, Malware, Adware and Scumware. These were classified as legimate programs but due to their malicious nature; have now been added to Nortons wide databank.
Once you buy the Program, you receive a 1 year free subscription to access liveupdate. You need to continue to pay every year if you wish to receive round-the-year protection.
**************** REQUIREMENTS
WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION/PROFESSIONAL: 300MHz or higher processor 128 MB of RAM 85 MB of available hard disk space
WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL 133MHz or higher processor 64 MB of RAM 85 MB of available hard disk space
WINDOWS ME 150Mhz or higher processor 32 MB of RAM 125 MB of available hard disk space
I would not suggest running the program under Win98 although this is possible
**************** RANT
Opening word documents can become a plague, due to the time needed to automatically scan it. The Program also hogs many system resources.
**************** Typical Price would be 29-39 Pound Sterling ****************
I would truely recommend this product to people who are interested in protecting their computer from the many malicious files that exist today.
Advantages: Finds those virus suckers Disadvantages: Can't do a damn thing about them!
...we invested in the Symantec Norton AV. Our troubles would be over!! Yippee!!!
No! No! No! Installed the software. Quite easy to do, even for computer illiterates like us. Let the thing scan our system and guess what? It found 17 viruses! No problem, all we had to do was to then go to the Norton site where we would find information on how to get rid of the suckers...
Oh no we couldn't! No way was Norton going to let us jump that firewall into www ... ...people who said they used Norton and had no problems but perhaps it was the firewall. We disabled the firewall. Nope.... no improvement. Perhaps it was because our computer is so old (it's about 5 years old, Windows 98) but hey, the guff from Norton says it would work for Windows 98.
Eventually, totally frustrated, we had to completely uninstall Norton. Once we did, we were able to access the net again. Phew!
So now, we have installed the free ...

...have heard a lot about Norton and their Anti Virus software and decide I needed to upgrade from my free virus scanner and get something a little more powerful.
I spent around £25 on the software. When I got it home I put it straight in my computer. I type in my serial number and started downloading the updates, which by the way can take up to half an hour (even on brodband).
After a quick restart Norton started working. I did a quick scan and found ... ...fully.
So I purchased Norton Firewall. I had both installed yet my system seemed to be slowing down even more. Then I went onto the internet and looked a review for Norton and was shocked to find I wasn't the only person who this had happened to. It seems a few other users who have Norton complained of their computers slowing down.
I have a 2.0ghz computer with 512mb and a 40gb Hard Drive, not what you would call a out of date computer. After another ...

...these virus creators, in steps Norton Antivirus 2004 - Complete Package (NAV 2004)
The new expanded threat detection capabilities of NAV 2004 includes scans for programs on your computer that could be used with malicious intent to compromise the security of another computer, spy on your private data, or track your online behavior (does this include cookies? probably). To help ensure maximum protection NAV 2004 will identify and block these threats ... ...working at its best.
Norton Antivirus is the only antivirus software i've ever used on my own PC's, in a previous job I had to endure Sophos, (and for those who are worried about NAV using up system resources, I'm pretty sure you've never used Sophos then!). I have now installed NAV on all my companies PC's.
The only downside with NAV is that 'out of the box' you only get one years subscription, having to subscribe after the first year, or upgrade ...

Advantages: Best all round protection Disadvantages: Hog of system resources
Norton Anti-Virus 2004 is the latest is the world-acclaimed series of antivirus software packages from Symantec. Availible in both Standard and Professional Edition it can cater for most users. The Standard Edition can be picked up in most shops for around £37.00 whilst the Professional Edition is availible for around £50.00
The main reasons for purchasing the Professional Edition are:
The rebate for users of past verions is greater on the Professional ... ...The Graphical Interface of Norton is superb, allowing you to configure, enable or disable fuctions at the click of a button.
NAV 2004 is also capable of scanning inside of compressed file so it can repair an infected file without having to corrupt/quarantine/delete the entire file.
The main problem that many users have experienced with NAV 2004 is how it's 'real-time' scanning feature slows down the general performance of most systems. To many ...

Advantages: good protection Disadvantages: riddled with errors & poor troubleshooting
...:
1) delete & reload Norton Anti-Virus
2) load Live Update manually
1) yes you do this - but it doesn't fix the problems
2) yes, you can download Live Updates manually from Symantec, but they are all about 4 Mgs & take around 20-30 mins to download.
Where Automatic Live Update (if it worked) takes a few mins.
Finally,
after much meandering through Symantec help pages, you finally find someway of contacting support & sending them your problems.
... ...email.
At last!.. you think.
But no,
all it gives you is yet another link to yet another Symantec troubleshooting page to yet another fix which yet again involves deleting & reloading the product.
And yes, of course, you've guessed it... it still doesn't work.
Now, to me having so many problem pages with all the numerous error messages seems to suggest an error-riddled product.
Perhaps under tested.
Perhaps released without thorough testing.

Manufacturer's product description
Utilizing new, state-of-the-art technology, Norton AntiVirus 2004 provides consumers with core protection against certain emerging non-virus threats such as spyware and keystroke logging programs. Norton AntiVirus 2004 empowers home and small office users to proactively ward off privacy and security breeches that are often caused by the presence of these non-virus threats. The new expanded threat detection capabilities of Norton AntiVirus 2004 will include scans for programs on the user's computer that can be used with malicious intent to compromise the security of a system, spy on the user's private data, or track users' online behavior. To help ensure maximum protection Norton AntiVirus 2004 will identify and block these threats at the point of entry to the system, detecting the threats during scans of email and instant message attachments, or during scheduled or on-demand system scans. The new, real-time compressed-file scanning feature prevents users of file-exchange services from sharing or downloading infected files even if those files are compressed. Additionally, as a measure to protect users from pirated or counterfeit software, Norton AntiVirus 2004 will also now include a product activation component.Like previous versions of the product, Norton AntiVirus 2004 will continue to help users achieve maximum protection with minimum effort by automatically scanning all files for malicious code, and automatically removing viruses, worms, and Trojan horses without requiring user intervention. Protection is further enhanced by Norton AntiVirus's consistent ability to protect automatically against both inbound and outbound online threats at all points of entry. Unlike many of its competitors, Norton AntiVirus 2004 will also install out of the box with all key protection settings and technologies active by default, including real-time scanning, automatic updating, and sophisticated heuristics. To ensure Norton AntiVirus 2004 users' protection stays updated against new online threats, Symantec's LiveUpdate will check for new antivirus updates whenever the user is online. LiveUpdate will then automatically and unobtrusively download updates in the background to minimize disruptions, thus allowing users to achieve the continued peace of mind that comes with knowing their antivirus product is working at its best.
