Anti-Virus software should only be used ideally as a last wall of defence not the primary tool as Norton seams to act.
Viruses need a place and vulnerability to first attack that's why keeping your operating system up to date is essential and probably the most important thing you can do to stay secure. Also keeping access to certain parts of the internet limited is also a bright idea consider moving web browsers for a start, internet explorer is the most popular browser used today and arguably the most vulnerable I personally recommend FireFox as it does not allow execution of potentially dangerous activex components and is constantly being updated by the open source community . Also try altering the settings in your email client if you have one to not run scripts or automatically download images.
In my opinion Norton takes over systems and can course a lot of problems its detection rate is also not to great and iv found that free programs such as avast and avg have a better detection and removal rate then Norton. One customer of mine almost lost a lot of very valuable work due to Norton taking over his system. Mainly my customers have had internet access problems relating to Norton instead on just monitoring files being used norton seams to restrict access also. Norton can also be a very hard program to remove and many times I have had to resort to a reformat because of this being the simplest method, symantec now offer a removal program on their web site but this can mostly be used with limited success.
Norton can course many problems relating to system files and internet access. Its to over powering in the wrong ways and personally I see it as to much of a pretty face and no brains kind of thing. In my opinion stick with the freebies.
Im not saying that everyone may have problems with Norton some people may find it very good with their systems but I deffinitly believe that the program has some issues that need to be resolved.
I normally find that Norton works well, when it comes as a package deal on retail systems such as dell's etc. This may be related to the version or the confirguration they install but I still stick with my comments on the detection rate even in this kind of situation. Updates for Norton can also be far and few between this is also significant issue for an anti-virus program as new viruses are constantly being written.
Another issue that bugs me with this program is that it is always trying to get users to upgrade and add extras, there's basically to much in program marketing this isn't something that should be especially for a program that isn't free anyway.
Here are my recommendations: Avast Home edition, AVG Free edition.
There are many more anti virus programs out there many free ones also.
Anyway that's my little bit said hopes this helps people a little with their anti-virus choice.
Cheers
Paul
Update: As with regards to firewalls I wouldn't really recommend using or not using one, I personally do not use an extra firewall apart from leaving the windows xp firewall in use and sometimes the one on my router, if you don't have xp I would recommend something basic so you can monitor what programmes are using your internet connection. The xp firewall allows this. Though I wouldn't particular recommend one firewall over another. I have in the past found firewalls not to be wholly necessary for the average user and to take up a lot of system resources. Basically a little over the top, I'd just recommend using the xp firewall or something basic and/or using any firewall built into a router if you use one. But please don't quote me on this at the end of the day its down to the individual if you use your computer for highly sensitive information then you may require lock down, the safest way for this is just to unplug from the net. If that's not an option take a look around the net there's plenty of advice out there.
Advantages: Good range of detection, reliable, year's free subscription. Disadvantages: Ineffective against certain viruses/trojans, requires subscription, offers few alternatives, ignores spyware, near impossible to remove.
...to own a copy of Norton Antivirus last year. As a consultant for an online company, with a large amount of information passing through my computer, an antivirus program was important. Based on Norton's reputation here in the UK, and a year's free subscription to virus updates, I purchased a copy, and was initially pleased with the results, a few minor, harmless viruses were discovered, and Norton removed them easily enough. Over the year I used the ... ...option for "reboot later" in Norton Antivirus, nor is there an option for "get rid of large, obstructive pop up window in front of your work without causing this immediate reboot to occur". As a result, there were occassional moments of "minor irritation" where entire mornings of work were lost. Of equal problem were the periodic automatic scans, which, on a lower to mid-range computer will occupy most of the CPU, slowing program functions to a crawl.

Advantages: Reliable, Good Detection Rate, Great Interface Disadvantages: Expensive, System Intensive, Lots of better alternatives
I bought Norton AntiVirus last year for around £25 in order to protect my computer from viruses, and since then I have had very mixed results with it.
On the visual side of things, Norton AntiVius is excellent.
The main menu neatly lists several different security options that can be activated or deactivated, as well as an option that allows you to begin scanning your computer with a click of a button.
On the side of the main window is a tab that ... ...My first real problem with Norton Antivirus is it's a real resourse hog - I have 1gb of ram yet my computer still suffers a huge slowdown during Norton's hour and a half scanning process.
Also, Norton Antivirus's updating process is far inferior to the majority of other antil virus software on the internet - it only updates once a week where many others update daily, the updating process is quite slow, and it ocassionally requires restarting after ...

Advantages: Quarentine of viruses Disadvantages: Price/ failure to work properly
I got Norton AntiVirus when I purchased my new laptop. I got it mainly because they were offering a dicounted deal when you purchased a computer from PC world. My family has always used Norton on the home computer so I thought they were fairly trustworthy as a company. I use the internet alot ans it is very important to protect your self against the viruses that you get when downloading files or simply being connected to the internet. Problems: Norton ... ...Norton. They told me that Norton can cause compatability problems with the internet aswell as occasional other programes. I wasn't sure if they were telling me the truth or just trying to pass on the blame to another product. So I dissabled norton and could suddenly connect to the internet fine. Norton also occasionally interfered with MSN aswell. Dispite always updating my software online I have still had a few viruses on my computer. These have ...

Advantages: Well known, good for spam Disadvantages: doesnt stop all the annoying ads, expensive
I bought Norton 2005 as I had used the previous versions and found them good.
However I have to say I am not all that impressed with the latest offering.
Whilst it has all the good features for example
Parental control
Ad blocking
Updated Virus Definitions.
Anti Spam
Firewall
Intrusion Alert
Privacy control.
No matter how many times I run a Live update or full system scan it doesnt seem to be able to get rid of all the threats that seem ... ...you have the option with Norton to decide if something is "spam" or not. Some just block the email totally so you never know it hasnt got there until someone tells you.
The Pop up blocker I have found to be not very good. Im not sure how many pop ups I would see without it, but all I Know is that every single site that I go on I get a pop up. The Google toolbar blocks more!
I dont want to write this product off as a waste of time. Many people swear ...

Advantages: I think to be the best on the market Disadvantages: none that i have found
WOW is all I can say, after being advised by an expert about which is the best software to use for antivirus protection I always got directed to Norton. I first used norton antivirus 2004 and this was great, it found all viruses that even I was surprised I had on my PC and offered free updates for a whole year. So come the new year I wanted better and I got it with NortonAntiVirus2005 11.0 and this is even better. I recently found 527 viruses on my PC thanks to Norton.
Features:
This package comes with again the free updates until 2006,
It will autoprotect your PC, kind of like a 24hour personal guard service,
It comes with internet worm protection,
Email scanning so now you can feel alot safer if you recieve a virus infected e-mail,
The ability to do a full system scan or just scan selected files,
Automatically ...
Advantages: It is alright at finding and removing viruses. Disadvantages: Slows computer down, difficult and time consuming installation, sometimes misses viruses
I've had Norton on my computer for many years. This is one of the versions I have used. However, my opinion remains the same for all of the Norton Antivirus software-
I don't like it. I have a couple aquaintances who use other antiviruses that are much cheaper and are a lot more convenient.
Norton Antivirus slows down your startup of your computer especially if it is an older one. It takes up a lot of space on your computer, saying it is "necessary" to download certain things when you honestly can go without them.
The only thing I've found that doesn't totally disappoint me is that it can find viruses fairly well. However, it has let a couple into our computer.
We have also had various problems with downloading newer versions as well. We've had trouble finding the downloads, and had trouble understanding certain instructions ...
Advantages: Total security for your pc Disadvantages: can slow down your pc booting time a little
So, why buy 2005 if you have 2004, I honestly couldnt tell you that, because you can just keep your 2004 up to date and stay just as protected.
Having said that, I would suggest if you dont have any, then you need to seriously think about getting norton2005.
If you have an old pc then your booting time can be seriously affected by the loading of the antivirus and the personal firewall.
What do you get for your hard earned cash?
Probably one of the most well known antivirus software out there, which you can automatically update via the internet, which is essential as new virus' are produced on a daily basis. As with previous versions you get a one year subscription for the free updates.
You get a firewall to stop your PC from being attacked from the outside and stops malicious software from sending information out ...
