It is now known that if you use a PC / MAC, it is a good idea (vital) to have Anti Virus software (AVS). If you connect to Internet, LAN (local area network), VPN (virtual private network), P2P (Peer to Peer) or use other means of file sharing such as disks in whatever format etc… Then the risk of getting a virus is enormous. Viruses come in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways. Be it a virus, Trojan horse, worm, spy ware etc… then it is well worth investing in Anti virus software.

Norton © or Symantec © have been at the forefront of Anti-Virus software for years now. I have tried other companies such as McAfee's ©, Panda © and Trend © but when I heard about Norton Internet Security I was so impressed by it (having seen it run on a friends PC) that I decided to get a copy.

As with most AVS, you install it onto your PC and it will scan for any 'known' viruses prior to running unseen in the background.

Norton Internet Security © (NIS) on the other hand goes one step further. It combines features including Norton AV © but also Firewall, Intrusion alerts, Anti-Spam, parental control and warns the user of outbreaks. Each feature is as important as the other. What Norton © has done is to group them all into one package.

The anti-virus software prevents known viruses from destroying those important documents or the smooth running of your PC.

Firewall, blocks ports (doors) which are normally left open. This, if used correctly is very efficient. It is rather complicated to set up and like so many computer programs needs time to comprehensively understand. If you run a home / office network it needs to be configured to allow known users (ports to be open) so each PC can interact, yet at the same time 'blocking' unknown PCs from connecting (eg: Those Hacker dudes out there).

Anti-Spam: This is rather clever and 'filters' Emails which arrive in your inbox. For example those rather annoying Viagra or Pornsite Emails. NIS © creates it own 'inbox' and any email from an unknown source (unknown Email address) will be filtered here. The downside is that you need to check to see whether or not somebody you don't know is trying to email you'. If there is an Email from somebody you wish to correspond with then all you have to do is drag and drop the said email into your standard inbox. Then you can choose to block the 'Spam mail' from further sending you Emails.

Parental control, allows the parents to configure and block certain web sites by entering the link (www address). This is rather good if you have young children in the house. "I think it is best to supervise children at this age rather than use software". Available if needed.

Intrusion Alert, blocks traffic (other users) from accessing your PC. Warns you when a intrusion (hack) attempt is made.

Norton Internet Security © can be updated whenever, so you are up to date with all the latest virus definitions This is a very good service and prevents you from being left in the dark if a new 'outbreak' occurs. NIS © also informs you of new viruses if and when necessary. A year subscription is required after a years use. The first year being included in the price of the program when you purchase it.

I have used NIS © for 2 years now and have not yet had a virus. I ran a test with a friend, he sent me a virus on purpose and NIS © did its magic, informed me that I had a virus and locked the bugger (virus not my friend) up in quarantine. It is then up to the user to either repair the infected document (file) or remove it from the PC. (access quarantine in NIS © and delete or repair)

NIS © is rather complicated to get going and does require as most software a lot of time to figure out. When first installed I had to de-activate it so I could receive my emails. Defeated the point of having it. Afterwards I managed to work out that I had to allow access to the program. This requires the user to access the Firewall settings and adding the program .EXE. (in this case outlook express). Any new program installed/connection to internet etc.. then a new rule is to be applied and NIS (c) asks you.

Another issues I had was allowing access to the LAN (home network). Adding ports is quite complicated and a knowledge of TCP/IP is needed. The 'wizard' is not explicit enough and I found it difficult to understand.

Finally, the after sales service is based On-line. You need to visit Symantec's website and make sure that you read everything there is before calling them. Their website is complicated and infuriatingly overcrowded with information. The call centre is based in Ireland and they quite often they refuse to answer the telephone. This too is at great cost to the user (phone bill).

Saying that, NIS © has worked very well for me. I do feel it could be more user friendly and the manual more explicit. Again, for advanced users in my view.

UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE!

NIS © doesn't slow down my PC. It never cause anyother of my programs to fail. If you want a program which is really complicating try Mandrake Internet Firewall: Buy a second hand pentium 1ghz and two NIC network cards. DL from the Mandrake website. Copy via ISO onto a CD-Rom and well...goodluck. I couldn't get past phase 1.
