I have been using Norton for a few years now, and have tried several alternatives. Some free, some not. To be honest I just don't feel safe on-line without Norton safeguarding my computer any more. Without wanting to bash the rest, they were slow, awkward, difficult, lacking in features whereas Norton, well I forget its running most of the time. The 2006 edition is great if you're a bit low on money and can't afford the new 2007 edition. 2006 still has all the features, works without bothering you, is thorough and effective, and is so easy to use I have never had to check the manual that came with it.
When you insert the installation disk Norton takes over and guides you through set up, offering you options on various levels of protection for your system. Finally it updates itself on-line, then it just seems to disappear into the background and carries on with its job while you carry on with your work. Since installing Norton I have not had a single virus or suspicious email. The cost of this program, particularly through sites such as ebay is easily affordable, and for new packages will always include the 1 year subscription to updates which is renewable. The program clearly shows how many days are left on its front page, as well as giving you quick and easy access to all of its functions. The program features an excellent firewall, norton antispam which integrates with your email client (such as outlook) to scan all incoming and outgoing mail, I found it to be very effective at this, much more so than mcafee which sent 50% of my friends emails to the spam folder, even after a year of using it, where as norton seems to "learn" very quickly. There are parental controls, to set what your kids can view online, privacy control to safeguard any private information stored on your pc. It also has instant messenger scanning to make sure nothing gets through via that facility. The Intrusion Prevention is highly effective at detecting and blocking online attacks and keeping your pc safe. Whilst running in the background, the program will update itself automatically, and will create new rules for each new program you add, in terms of how that program connects to the internet.
All in all, it is a fairly fool proof program that has done an amazing job of protecting my computer and information that I will be using for many years to come. The rest have been tested and don't even come close. If you want something that does its job, does it well and doesn't get in the way while it is working then this is the one for you. If you want it to be simple to use yet full of features, then this is the one for you. If you want an all-in-one security package that takes away all your online worries and makes you forget there was ever anything to worry about online then this is the one for you!
