Unfortunately the Norton Internet Security Suite has a notorious reputation for being resource hungry; in other words it's a program which utilizes a lot of your system memory and processing power in order to do what you want it to do. In it's defense however, Internet Security packages such as this do try and be a jack of all trades and protect you from not only viruses but spam, system intrusions through the use of a firewall and more.
Internet Security 2007 is the latest version of the all-in-one protection product in the Norton family. The interface has been radically redesigned from the ground up, which is something that hasn't happened for about 5 years. The new look can take a little getting used to but at least it makes it very clear of your current protection status through large green and red icons on the left hand side. Unfortunately, for me anyway, the interface feels rather rushed and unfinished. Norton Internet Security 2006 had a marvelous user interface which felt a joy to use whereas 2007 has the opposite effect on me.
At the end of the day however, it's not the looks that make the product, it's what it can do for you. Symantec's Norton AntiVirus plays a key role in this suite and offers fantastic anti-virus protection all year round. You can carry out scans if and when you like as well as schedule scans and it's also possible to scan individual files, compressed archives and folders at any time too. The results are given to you in a clear and concise manner and make removal quite simple.
Norton Personal Firewall is also present here and it's not bad at all. In my experience the Norton Firewall is a little over-the-top and blocks a little too much - for example I used to get a problem where a game would be blocked from being played online... no matter what I did. In the end I had to disable the firewall before I could play which defeats the point of having the product in the first place. Advanced configuration is on offer, but it's hidden quite deep down which may put off more experienced users.
Internet Security 2007 offers real time phishing and scam protection which these days is a must for anyone going online and even more so should you carry out online shopping. A new toolbar appears in Internet Explorer which will attempt to warn you, should you navigate to a 'dodgy' site. These 'dodgy' sites are flagged as such by Symantec themselves so it's fairly safe to say the results will be reliable but there's always the chance of a false-positive.
In terms of new features over old versions of Internet Security in the Norton family there's not an awful lot on offer. A new look is the most apparent but that's about it. Real time updating is still here using Symantec's LiveUpdate system and it's reassuring to know that signature updates come out every couple of days or so. With your purchase you are offered a years worth of updates free of charge, which you'll be expected to renew when it expired. In my person opinion I find it better value for money to purchase the new version and take advantage of the free year subscription included then to just renew your license - The amount of money asked from you is around the same anyway.
Despite what I have said here, Norton just isn't for me. I have every version of Norton Internet Security from 2002 up until 2005 where I stopped using it and moved onto other offerings. I have used 2006 but not for a long time. In the later versions of Norton Internet Security I experienced some rather annoying problems such as my copy completly freezing up and telling me my license isn't valid.... when it was. It demanded a complete re-install. Uninstalling Norton Internet Security is a pain in itself as it never really removes everything. My fiancee used to use Internet Security 2005 but when she took it off, a small part of the product remained and stopped her from seeing network shares on the home network. Traces of the program were still visible in the Program Files directory and in msconfig.
Norton Internet Security is good and solid for many home users, but for more experienced computer users such as myself there are better offerings available. The AntiVirus, Firewall, Phishing and scam protection are good and solid but they do still like to use up your system memory. If you choose to purchase this program I don't really think you'll be disappointed... just make sure you have a fairly fast machine

I first used NORTON antivirus 2005 as it came free with my laptop. So when it ran out about 3 months ago I went out looking for a replacement, I only wanted NORTON antivirus 2007 that cost £29.99 in my local pc shop, but when in the shop I noticed NORTON internet security 2007 for £49.99. NORTON internet security 2007 is at a one off price for around £50 and only lasts one year, if any one knows of a better product then please let me know.

Advantages: Easy to use, full package of tools. Disadvantages: Still heavy on system resources.
My partner bought a copy when obtaining her first computer and it seemed sensible for me to split the cost. I was slightly apprehensive as I had used Internet Security before and had ended up removing it because of the amount of system resources it occupied.
I am pleased to say that Symantec have made some improvements in this area although there is still huge room for improvement. If you have a very powerful computer you may not notice it too much ... ...remove it and buy another as she can\'t afford it yet but I will recommend a change next time if Symantec don\'t sort this out once and for all.
Come on Symantec, you have a basically sound product which functions well and is easy to use even if you are a beginner but not everyone has a powerhouse of a PC. Your competitors are overtaking you in terms of capabilities but most of all because they don\'t stretch system resources.

...If you are familiar with Norton products, you will notice first of all that the Protection Centre is much easier to use now - lots of one-click shortcuts instead of menus. This makes it easier to do the things you often do, like scans, updates etc. But this alone wouldn't really make it a worthwhile upgrade. The real advantage is with the phishing filter and spyware detection. Most people think that if they dont visit certain types of website, they're ... ...keystroke loggers. This version of Norton handles the vast majority of these risks easily. The anti-spam software integrates very well with MS Outlook 2003 too - it takes a few weeks to train it, but thereafter you will probably find yourself hitting "This is Spam" only once in a blue moon!
The Norton Account system, whereby all your details are stored online, allows you to scrub your hard drive without losing Norton.
