I have now been driving for 12 years, and for 10 of them have kept a wonderfully clean unblemished record, no claims, no convictions, no problems.
HISTORY 4 years ago I changed my car insurance to CGU (now CGNU) as they offered the best quote. A year ago on renewing my insurance I had 7 years No Claims bonus and believed I had Protected No Claims. I also have a number of other major insurance policies with this company.
NEW CAR Last year, in early summer, my partner and I finally decided we could afford to upgrade the car to something tidy, and set off on our search. We found the ideal car, and set about putting the wheels in motion to sort out the necessary details, upgraded the car insurance, which cost about an extra £200 as it was a better car with a much higher value, no problem, I duly paid my extra monthly premium and set about my business.
ACCIDENT During late summer, after swimming with my daughter, I reversed my car out of the car-park, straight into the back of another car parked where it shouldn't be. I wasn't happy, but as my father quite rightly pointed out, it could have been a child in the wrong place so I paid for the other guys damage and put mine through the insurance, no problems, I received a courtesy car, and paid a £100 excess upon collection, no forms, no hassle, great, pretty stupid mistake I wouldn't make again..........
WAIT FOR IT.......... ACCIDENT No 2 Two months later, I was driving up the motorway to visit a friend in rush hour traffic, the roads were wet and the sun bright (you can probably imagine the rest), when I drove into another car. Luckily nobody was hurt, the AA came and towed my car back the garage, and again, after completing a few forms, my car was dealt with, I paid my £100 excess, and off I went, very nervous, and afraid to drive the car. Well I did get my confidence back eventually as driving is an essential requirement within our family.
QUOTE Whoops - my insurance is due - I knew it was going to be high, but nothing prepared me for the shock this morning, it had increased by £2,000, I have lost every trace of NCD, nothing for customer loyalty, I can't afford to pay this sort of amount. Astounded, one of work colleagues suggested I try a few other company, just a guideline as to the results, Direct Line - 50% less, Bell Insurance (part of Admiral) 55% less, Eagle Star £1000 less, elephant.co.uk - 60% less.

Yes, I was stupid, careless, unlucky, whatever you may want to call it having two accidents in close sucession, and yes they dealt with them efficiently and effectively, but I would have been better off paying for them myself, before that I had been claim free for over 10 years and full NCD and believed protection was included in my policy.
MY REQUEST TO YOU BEWARE: read the small print, and if you have a relatively minor bump, make sure it is worth claiming. if you have full No Claims Discount, please ensure they are protected.
Advantages: Quick and cheap cover Disadvantages: Not sure what their claims are like
...very surprised to find that Norwich Union Direct had the cheapest offer. By surprised, I mean I wasn't expecting them to be the cheapest as they were the insurance company I heard about thanks to a piece of 'junk mail' I received around the time of my renewal. The leaflet also offered a free Pay as You Go mobile phone, that I was able to sell for £30, saving me even more money!
At the time I was a little worried as I'd left finding a new insurance ... ...for quite a long time - I must have checked approx 15 insurance companies, which included some brokers. So I was pretty sure I'd found the best price. The difference with NUD was that their quote was around £100 cheaper, making my insurance approx £500. This is a huge difference, which is why I was so surprised - especially as I got a free mobile too. Before I phoned them I though it was just going to be something they were trying to entice you with, ...

Advantages: polite, efficient, website easy to use Disadvantages: couldn't print my quote
...had a primary quote from Norwich union of £377. Clicked open their website to do a full quote to see if the above was do-able or if it was the lack of full details which would then rocket the premium to outer space, somewhere near Alpha (Alfa) century?, groan inducing pun, sorry.
Using their website is easy and quick.
The first screen you are greeted with bright yellow menus and the options of all kinds of cover; Motor, travel, health, business, ... ...buy icon I called up Norwich union to ask how long before I need to send you evidence of my no claims bonus and how long does it take for my cover note to be posted to me. The very helpful service adviser told me that I can send my n.c.b. letter to them once I receive it from my old company and that the cover note will be 4 to 5 days. I needed my cover note in a couple days and she said that it wouldn't be a problem to fax me a copy if I wished. ...

Advantages: Good companies Disadvantages: Disregard for the brokers
...Accident, London & Edinburgh and Norwich Union to name but a few.
What's going on, there appear to be fewer and fewer insurance companies to choose from these days. All of the major companies are taking over the smaller companies, are we going to be left with one major insurer? If so what will happen to the good old high street Insurance Broker?? There will be no insurance companies left for them to offer, so therefore they will no doubt go.
So ... ...What is really peculiar also is that Insurance companies are out pricing the small insurance brokerage, with their direct products i.e. the same insurance quotation from Norwich Union against Norwich Union direct can be as much as £100 different. This must really put the pressure on the small brokers. ...

Advantages: One of the cheapest quotes Disadvantages: Favours new customers over existing ones
...on-line quote received was from Norwich Union Direct.
The web site was quite easy to navigate.
For a quote you are asked to enter the usual details eg name, address, date of birth, make + model, cubic capacity, registration number, annual mileage, registered keeper, modifications, security add-ons such as alarm or immobiliser, where vehicle is kept overnight, no of years no claims etc. The whole process took about 10 to 15 minutes. At the end you ... ...you ring Norwich Union Direct you simply give the reference number which the operator types in and up pop your details. It’s best to go over the salient points of the policy again.
There is the option of having a courtesy car if your car is off the road for repairs. The quote is reduced if you increase the voluntary excess. There is also a discount if you are already a holder of a home contents insurance policy from Norwich Union Direct. You ...

Advantages: One of the leading home insurers Disadvantages: Refuses to pay up for valid claims
renewal policy and the premium came to £135. In 1997 I had my jacket stolen from work. The hassle in contacting the police and stopping my debit cards was enormous. Unfortunately my NorwichUnion Home insurance could not recompensate me as I did not have extra cover.
So last week I asked for personal possessions cover to be added to my policy. The total premium came to £202 which I paid on the spot. Later that day I had second thoughts and phoned to cancel the extra cover.
To my surprise only £61 of the £67 was refunded. The rest was taken in administration fees.
Being a shareholder of CGNU I am unhappy at the business practice of the company making unecessary profit at the expense of the customer.
The lesson I learnt from all of this was to enquire about quotes before rushing in and paying for additional services.

Advantages: Excellent company. Pay on time no quibble. Disadvantages: The 50%+ increase in premiums over two years.
We had a burglary about two years ago and this year a lightning strike (yes, I know surge protectors etc) wiped out my mother board, fax and home highway set up.
When I first joined NorwichUnion Direct they offerd me buildings & contents insurance for about £40 per month. Around this time they merged to form the huge CGNU conglomerate. Was this when things changed I wonder.
I cannot fault them on any of their services. They have always been prompt and polite. Have always done what they said they would do and paid up the contractors after the burglary and straight into my bank after the lightning strike. I suppose for that reason when they jumped my insurance to £75 per month last year I stayed. Maybe I should have shopped around more then. But I was very happy with the service even though the increasing premiums meant ...
Advantages: Simple to arrange and good claims handling Disadvantages: Need to specify your contents amount
NorwichUnion are one of the biggest, if not the biggest home insurers, I have not reviewed an insurance company before, maybe it is because making a review on insurance interesting is nigh on impossible which it probably is, after all insurance is what actuaries do when they need a thrill. However it is an important product insurance, as in effect by having a buildings and contents policy with them I am in fact quite literally insuring my assets. Yes with NorwichUnion I'm able to insure my manhood, not in the literal physical sense, valuable as it is to me in a very personal way and it does open the door for such comments as "They do offer redundancy cover" and "Are you covered for wear and tear?" No what I mean is if something serious happens to my property that requires a physical repair I do not have to admit I have no home ...
