I went to amsterdam last year and deiced to take out a single trip travel policy to make sure well if i got ill or my bags where stolen then id be covered. I search on the internet and found prices around £20 for the length of time i was going. i then tried to get one through work and as a member of staff i get a discount, ummmm well we get 5% not a huge amount on a small policy, other people who work in the insurance world if they get a policy through ... ...with the small price of the policy i wasnt really all that worried.
The internet site was useful you can download a copy of the policy booklet, and there are many upgradeable stuff, like if your going to be taking golf clubs, if you have a business cover,

I went to amsterdam last year and deiced to take out a single trip travel policy to make sure well if i got ill or my bags where stolen then id be covered. I search on the internet and found prices around £20 for the length of time i was going. i then tried to get one through work and as a member of staff i get a discount, ummmm well we get 5% not a huge amount on a small policy, other people who work in the insurance world if they get a policy through there own company discounts are above 10% at least. but with the small price of the policy i wasnt really all that worried.
The internet site was useful you can download a copy of the policy booklet, and there are many upgradeable stuff, like if your going to be taking golf clubs, if you have a business cover, i didnt need any of this as well i was going to amsterdam, i mite have thought i was doing some flying but i think it was more of a case what we enjoyed out there. the internet gives you the biggest discount two(get a qoute on line) if will be cheaper, but then again most places have some unline discount.
The policy came through two days after i took it out online, pretty simple a schedule showing me whats covered, what my excess where and also a little card giving me useful numbers if i need to claim whilst im abroad, handy, i you do need them.
The excess on this policy is £50, as someone who travels for adventure im not extacly going to be making a claim for a £300 carema. and only going of a weekend i didnt pack much.
One problem with this policy is the excess, i had a firestaff that went missing between amsterdam and luton, if the policy had no excess, i would have put in a claim, but as the staff cost me £40, i would have been £10 down. next time i get insurance ill be getting a excessless policy, but for those of you out there who have items over the £50 excess you would be ok. that is one disadvantage with this policy you cannot change the excess, it would be more benifital to my needs

Alldocuments were sent to me promptly and being a recently retired Insurace agent I have read all the terms and conditions and the cover appears the best that I have Seen, Only when and if a clam arises will anyone the true worth of the cover, but so far the service offered by screensave is superb, try it ...

Advantages: Very Competitive, on-line quotes easy to obtain Disadvantages: none
...insurance to the USA through Norwich Union, the service was fast, efficient and cheap.
The web-site provides an online quote, which came to £28, and is very easy to use. Answer a few questions and hey presto job done. You can call for a quote if you prefer.
The price NU quoted was far cheaper than other providers. I asked for quotes from several, including Tesco (£43) and Natwest (£41), and found that most of them are simply resellers of insurance ... ...are selling on a commission basis - therefore dealing with NU directly is much cheaper, aswell as easy to do.
I found online insurance cheaper at £25, but after reading the terms and conditions, I realised that the excess was £50 - NU charge £35 which is very competitive and one of the lowest around. My cover also included baggage upto the value of £1500, with a maximum of £250 for any one item.
For me it was a very attractive policy which offered ...

Advantages: Dealing with the largest insurer, Good customer service. Disadvantages: Prices may be based as much on loyalty to your bank as they are on insurance risk.
If you call: HSBC, First Direct, Abbey National, National Trust ATL and most unions, along with many other groups, you will end up speaking to the same operator?
These banks and other organisations act as brokers selling insurance on behalf of CGNU. You probably wouldn't be too shocked to discover that. What might surprise you is the fact that you will be directed through to the same operator when you call these agencies!
They operate in partnership ... ...giving the business to the insurance company.
What does it mean for you? 1. You may well be offered nearly identical policies from two of the partners at quite different prices. 2. You get to deal with someone who has an idea of what they are talking about.
3. You have the security of dealing with the biggest company.
4. You aren't neccessarily paying more because the bank bank may keep their "cut" low as an incentive to use their other products. ...

Advantages: Great customer service and cheap prices Disadvantages: none that I can think of!
I called Norwich Union for a quote because I was going on a trip to the US. Realising that insurance would be expensive to a destination that has such outrageous medical bills I expected to pay a lot. However when I called for a quote they advised me that I should buy the annual insurance (It was cheaper than the one trip, because I was going for 6 weeks). I paid around £40-50 for annual insurance, which I thought was a great deal! When I got home ...

Advantages: One of the leading home insurers Disadvantages: Refuses to pay up for valid claims
renewal policy and the premium came to £135. In 1997 I had my jacket stolen from work. The hassle in contacting the police and stopping my debit cards was enormous. Unfortunately my NorwichUnion Home insurance could not recompensate me as I did not have extra cover.
So last week I asked for personal possessions cover to be added to my policy. The total premium came to £202 which I paid on the spot. Later that day I had second thoughts and phoned to cancel the extra cover.
To my surprise only £61 of the £67 was refunded. The rest was taken in administration fees.
Being a shareholder of CGNU I am unhappy at the business practice of the company making unecessary profit at the expense of the customer.
The lesson I learnt from all of this was to enquire about quotes before rushing in and paying for additional services.

.
Abbey National: The telephone quote came to £591.91. I tried Abbey National because of shareholder mailings. Again the literature promised competitive quotes.
Daewoo Direct (Corinthian): The telephone quote came to £615. I explained to the lady that being a Daewoo customer I expected the lowest quote. But I got the most expensive quote of all. I do feel let down by Daewoo Direct.
NorwichUnion Direct: The renewal letter gave a quote of £343. This was the cheapest of all the quotes bar Admiral. The lady I spoke to from customer services was quite unfriendly and wanted to end the conversation as soon as possible. Even though I was renewed my policy with NorwichUnion Direct she did not sound very happy.

CGNU - an amalgamation of Commercial Union, General Accident, London & Edinburgh and NorwichUnion to name but a few.
What's going on, there appear to be fewer and fewer insurance companies to choose from these days. All of the major companies are taking over the smaller companies, are we going to be left with one major insurer? If so what will happen to the good old high street Insurance Broker?? There will be no insurance companies left for them to offer, so therefore they will no doubt go.
So many insurance companies seem to be amalgamating i.e. Bishopsgate and Northern Star have become Fortis. Zurich have taken over Eagle Star. etc etc etc.
What is really peculiar also is that Insurance companies are out pricing the small insurance brokerage, with their direct products i.e. the same insurance quotation from Norwich ...
