One million Dollars – that’s what this delightful book is all about. Hey! Before you start jumping to wrong conclusions, let me clarify that it certainly does not deal about how to go about earning that kind of money.
One million dollars - that's the figure that Harvey Metcalfe, lifelong king of shady deals has pulled off with empty promises of an oil bonanza and instant riches from four unsuspecting investors. Metcalfe is a street- smart self-made businessman who floats a bogus oil company and puts out eye-catching articles in the newspapers that his company has struck oil. This leads to a virtual “Gold Rush” and his company’s shares are lapped up by thousands of stars-in-the-eyes investors. Overnight, four men, the heir to an earldom, a doctor, an art dealer and an Oxford don, find themselves penniless, thanks to Metcalfe’s business acumen.
The four losers, previously unknown to each other, conspire to steal every dollar back - Not a penny more, Not a penny less (net of all expenses, of course!) from the man who stole it from them in the first place. Metcalfe has made a career out of swindling people all his life but this time he has swindled the wrong men. Our four heroes band together and shadow him from the casinos of Monte Carlo to the high-stakes windows at Ascot trying to recover all their savings and to beat the swindler at his own game.
Each of the four gentlemen in question has a particular art or talent which, incidentally are also the hobbies of our venerable conman. Using their talents as Metcalfe’s weaknesses, they hatch separate schemes, plan them out to the last detail and together succeed in getting the better of Metcalfe every time without arousing his suspicion.
Do they manage to recover back all the money that they’ve lost? I’m not telling you that, for the ending is magically woven, charmingly narrated and deserves to be read oneself.
The book was Archer’s first and (in my opinion) the best that he’s ever written...later on he gradually begun stereo-typing himself by spinning all those family sagas set amidst the backdrop of personal vendettas and high business stakes. This book is delightfully witty and devoid of unnecessary deviations and characters and that is what made it so popular the world over.
One Million Dollars – this book is worth every penny of that amount - Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less!
Advantages: A good story with exceptional characters, an enjoyable finale. Disadvantages: A slow starter.
...with an offer they can not refuse; the opportunity to get their money back from Harvey Metcalfe, and without him knowing it. They agree, and start the process of getting back $1 million, not a penny more, not a penny less (plus expenses, of course).
The deal is this; each member of the team must come up with a plan to get their share of the money back, using the other members if necessary. They all go back to their lives to think up their plans.
... ...ready, except James, he can not think of any way to sting Harvey for the money. Never the less the other plans are to go ahead. They are all to take place during Harvey’s usual tour of Europe, and the only weapons that they have is Harvey’s very predictable habits and the fact that he has never met any of them. He loves to give money to the big Universities, his generosity to Harvard is well known. He loves impressionist paintings, and still needs ...

...for exactly what they lost, not a penny more, not a penny less.
Jeffrey Archer really does describe the storyline well, also he manages to get over the impression that you know the characters really well and have known them all your life. I am always going to be a bit biased about this books because it is one of my favourite books by Jeffery Archer. I am at the moment reading all the Jeffery Archer that I have I will write an opinion about them ... ...weeks ago as I was searching for the power adapter to my computer ( no not the internet one). My mum had bought the book about fifteen years ago from it cost her £2.50, it will probably cost around £6.99 today also this is the: ISBN 0-340-25573-0 ...

...vow to get it back. Not a penny more, not a penny less. Together, the four men pull off a number of schemes to con the rich 'owner' of the company. Amusing and clever scams, designed to delight the audience. And its good to see the bad guy falling for them utterly and hopelessly.
An enjoyable, clever and humorous read, with a fantastic ending, that is typical Archer. If you like Archer, read this, if you have never read Archer, read it anyway. A ...

Advantages: Excellent Read, Great Story, Well Written Disadvantages: Reasonably Short!
...About the Book:
Not a Penny More, Not a Penny less is his first book that he wrote in 1976 (actually the year I was born!).
Not a Penny More, Not a Penny less follows the story of a conman Harry Metcalfe who is a self made millionaire, who swindles 4 men out of 1 Million dollars in a searching for Oil scam.
The 4 men all expect to be rich following this investment, but find themselves virtually bankrupt instead. The four men come from different ... ...money back. I am not going to go into the actual plots here as that would just spoil the book - and then whyshould you want to read it.
There is a most amusing twist at the end of the tale, which Jeffrey Archer is well known for.
My Opinion:
This is Jeffrey Archer's first Book, and in my opinion is probably one of his best. My only complaint is that it is too short, I am always gripped by this book and never want to put it down, and therefore ...
