Well I never thought I would find myself writing about toilet roll – but here I am!
The reason behind this opinion is my disgust, disappointment, horror and outrage (ok ok calm down a bit girl) about a toilet roll (yes I am that worked up over a simple loo roll). The offending toilet roll – Nouvelle – luxury quilted. Luxury quilted my ….. little finger!
Their claim ‘Nouvelle with its attractive, new quilted pattern is as soft as it’s ever been. And each and every sheet is strong, absorbent and gentle on your skin’
Ok so they live up to the soft on your skin claim, it was pleasant enough to blow my nose on, whilst I had a cold and soft on the skin. BUT and yes it’s a big but, strong? absorbent? Really folks give nouvelle a big miss. On blowing of the nose, well the paper ripped and I ended up with gunky hands – now I don’t blow excessively hard, and gave Nouvelle the benefit of the doubt. When my little boy blew his nose – remember he is only 2 – the same result. This I would not call strong or absorbent. Now I am not going to go into graphic detail about toilet rolls other uses, but in all honesty it did get the job done – eventually, only after half the roll had been used though. I could have done a better job with Izal paper!!
My other gripe with this toilet tissue is that it sticks to your hands!! Not a pleasant experience at all. Considering it is supposed to be two ply tissue, with the added benefit of the ‘quilted luxury’, it is unbelievably thin. It took almost 2 minutes (yes I did time it) to peel the first layer of paper off and at that it was ripped. I find that the 2 sheets come unravelled when trying the use the paper.
Looking at the attractiveness of the design on the paper – all I can say if you like hearts and flowers then you are laughing. The design didn’t really do it for me at all. I am not interested in the design of the paper, more its absorbency, strength and ability to do the job.
You may be asking why I bought this particular roll – well I had been remiss in my shopping duties and forgot to buy my usual toilet paper (Charmin). I happened to pop into my local petrol station where Nouvelle was on special offer 99p for 4 rolls (usually £1.99) so I bought a packet.
Comparing the two brands side by side,
The difference in the feel of the Nouvelle paper against the Charmin paper is glaring obvious. Charmin actually feels thicker, whereas the Nouvelle feels like one ply toilet tissue. Both of them are quilted with embossed patterns. Charmin definitely wins on this hands down.
Strength – very little pressure was needed to break the Nouvelle paper, although it did tend to rip in the middle of the sheet, rather than at the perforation. Charmin ripped at the perforations everytime, with a slightly higher degree of pressure. Nouvelle paper almost dissolved on getting wet. Charmin remained intact whilst wet. Charmin again wins.
Absorbency – One sheet of 2 ply Nouvelle failed to mop up 5ml of water adequately, instead becoming a fragmented soggy mess. One sheet of 2 ply Charmin not only mopped the 5ml of water and stayed intact, but also mopped up another 10ml of water before being soaked.
I would strongly recommend anyone considering buying nouvelle to steer well clear. The only thing they appear to have going for this paper is the fact it is 100% recycled high quality paper. It might well have been high quality prior to recycling, but there is nothing quality about it as toilet tissue.
