Scratch" with The Buzzcocks, Magazine added high drama and rigorous intellect to punk's kamikaze attack. Their classic debut single, "Shot By Both Sides", was released two days after The Sex Pistols split and pointed the way ahead for savage, compelling rock music. Today their influence can be heard in the likes of Radiohead and Muse, but during their short career Devoto's outfit were trailblazers who defined rather than followed fashion.Maybe It's Right To Be Nervous Now, compiled with Devoto's assistance, cherry picks choice tracks from all four Magazine albums complemented by markedly different alternative versions and a bounty of unreleased live tracks.Magazine's armoury consisted of searing angular guitar riffs, insistent metronomic beats, brooding undercurrents and dark anxieties expressed by Devoto's angry but glacial vocals. Co-founder John McGeogh is one of the most underrated British guitarists of his era but, though Magazine prided themselves on exemplary musicianship, intensity rather than grandeur was Devoto's objective. It is a goal pursued unflinchingly through the epic "Back To Nature", the wracked but tumultuous "A Song From Under The Floorboards" and the insatiable "Permafrost". Thrilling interpretations of Sly Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", Captain Beefheart's "I Love You, You Big Dummy", a terrifically contorted overhaul of James Bond theme "Goldfinger" and an outrageously burlesque rendition of The Buzzcocks' "Boredom" show that even when performing cover versions, Magazine were true originals.--Gavin Martin

NOW Magazine runs under the banner of "the UK's bestselling celebrity magazine", but it's really impossible to prove or disprove this claim as this market seems to have recently been flooded by lots of new titles (Heat, Star, Closer). The celebrity gossip arena is a burgeoning and highly popular market. However, NOW was one of the first off the block as it's been on our shelves for over 5+ years now.
So what do you get for £1.00? Lots of celebrity photos, lots of information on latest must haves (be it fashion, film or music) and a jolly good (if a little untaxing) read. It's good value - lots of photos, very few advertisements and packed full of trivia. It's not particularly nasty or cruel to our celebrities but then neither is it bland like "Hello" or "OK!".
The front cover is the usual screaming banner headlines in large letters with accompanying photos of the relevant celebrity. Favourite cover girls are Posh, Jordan, Jade or Geri. A weight gain or a hiccup in their loves lives and all the staff in celebrity gossip media land rub their hands together with glee. Lots of pages of speculation, commentary from so-called experts, quotes from their "friends" and they're away - 6 to 8 pages filled - no problem.
~ NOW VIEWPOINT ~ The magazine kicks off with their take on the biggest gossip story to hit the stands that week. No prizes for guessing their favourite subject matter - yup - that's right - the Beckhams.
~ NOW NEWS ~ Usually a continuation of the story touched upon in the viewpoint. Six to eight pages of that week's biggest story in the press. Both old and new photos, suitably lurid banner headlines, and separate boxes of related topics accompany the text. NOW usually wheel out their agony aunt Caroline Buchanan for her comments and advice on the celebrity's "problem". I'm sure they must be following it line-by-line….
~ NOW CAUGHT ON CAMERA ~ Some unsuspecting celeb filmed acting totally innoxiously, minding their own business and spread all over the press.
~ TALKING TO NOW ~ Double page spreads with accompanying photos. NOW talks to five or six individuals about their diet tips, favourite shops and love lives. Usually soap stars, pop stars, wannabees or the latest reality TV "star".
~ LETTERS EMAIL WHATEVER ~ One page of letters from readers. One column always features a photo of a reader with a celebrity and how they met them. Another column prints solutions to reader requests for specific items seen on TV, like shoes worn by SJP in Sex and the City or Posh's latest bling.
~ CELEBRITY GOSSIP WITH CLAUDIA CONNELL - RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW ~ Standard bite sized pieces of gossip - not enough substance for a full story yet. Quite amusing as this double page spread is spiced up by anonymous hints, where you have to try and guess who they're talking about (i.e. Ageing rock star who is really gay or American movie star using hookers…) Answers on a postcard please as I can never tell who it is aimed at.
~ NOW STAR STYLE ~ Three-page spread of fashion tips and beauty secrets from a celebrity - we get to see her modelling clothes from her favourite shops (and then probably keeping them). Usually features a lesser-known actress from a soap or a singer from a mildly successful band.
~ BEAUTY STAR STYLE ~ Four page spread on the latest beauty products, including a two pages focus on a specific product - one of my favourites was "Killer Cleavages" and how celebrities achieve them (and here's me thinking chicken fillets were something you could only get in Sainsburys).
~ SORTED STAR STYLE ~ Feature on ten or so different photos and prices of a "must have" fashion item. Handy ready reckoner as it shows the best and cheapest products on the market. Stockist information is clearly detailed at the back of the magazine.
~ SHOPPING STAR STYLE ~ I love this page as it shows 6 or 7 designer label products alongside almost identical high street versions, available at a fraction of the price. In most cases it is impossible to tell the two apart.
~ NOW TRAVEL ~ Double page spread on a specific resort or city. It details locations, nightlife, eating and drinking, how to get there and why you should go. Informative but a little short - maybe I'm being unfair, as they do not claim to be a travel magazine.
~ NOW MIND & BODY ~ Several pages on the latest health scares, the most recent diets, latest wonder products and miracles foods. There is also a problem page from a Dr Mark Atkinson (a natural health expert) offering alternative solutions and traditional remedies to common ailments. This is usually informative and interesting. It continues with a double page spread featuring a celebrity and their struggle with a specific health problem. Although this sounds a bit trite, it is actually well done as it prints the facts and symptoms of their illness and then goes onto more detail on where help and treatment can be found for us lesser mortals in the same boat.
~ NOW FILM PREVIEWS ~ Two page spread on the latest blockbuster - informative, honest and interesting. A further page details two other films plus commentary on the latest top ten films at UK cinemas. All films are given a NOW star rating.
~ NOW SOAP PREVIEWS ~ One page summary on Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Sarcastic and biting - great fun as it takes the mickey out of them big time.
~ COUPLES CONFIDENTIAL WITH CAROLINE BUCHANAN ~ Readers write to the NOW agony aunt for some no nonsense and sensible advice. It's always fun reading about other people's sex lives - or is it just me?!
~DAVID WELLS HOROSCOPES ~ The week ahead as seen in the stars - load of tosh but whatever floats your boat.
Do I recommend NOW magazine? Well the articles are short but succinct and informative. Many include names, addresses or websites if you want to get further information. It does cover all the main sections you would expect in a woman's magazine (fashion, beauty and health), but is also has lashings of celebrity gossip and photos thrown in as well. It's kinder to the celebrities than some of the tabloids. It makes commentary on them but in a nice and fun way - it doesn't stoop to nastiness or cheap jibes. It has recipes, horoscopes, problem pages and a crossword. The only thing it lacks is a TV guide. It has plenty or articles and very little advertising. In short at £1.00 its damn good value - packed full of ideas and information. It won't stretch your brain or make you sit up and think, but it will help you unwind and relax.

Advantages: great source of celeb gossip - very light hearted reading & cheap Disadvantages: smells strongly of printing chemicals
...here is a big blue NOW in the top left corner, with a big pink blob over it showing the fab price of £1. There is a couple of pictures of Britney Spears, one showing her as she used to be 'very skinny' and one now of her on the beach with a little more weight on. The head lines are:
Britney - eating for two?
Why Gail (Porter) tried to kill her self - with piccie
Supermodels of the future - with piccie
Is cleavage dead? And a picture of Pamela ... ...side to this is the Now contents page, with a picture of Cilla Black and Cherie Blair. Next it gives a 2 page spread about Britney and speculates if she is pregnant or not! They have the usual cheap shots that we all love - you know where the celeb is looking rough! The article is set out in columns, making it really easy to read, and pleasing to the eye.
Now I open out to a 2 pager 'blast from the past', with piccies of Chesney Hawkes, Belinda ...

Advantages: AN ESCAPE FROM REALITY Disadvantages: YOUR LIFE LOOKS BORING IN COMPARISON, BUT THAT'S GOOD
...latest copy of Now.
Now magazine has been around for a few years now, and although there is plenty of competition I have to say this is the only magazine I have stayed faithful to. It's not particularly glitzy, quite simple in design and lay-out, making it just perfect for those times when you want to escape the daily rigours of life, if only for half an hour.
Priced at £1.10, I remember when it was on sale for a measly 50 pence, but just like ... ...price rises as quick as the weather changes. Still, not to complain, it's worth every penny.
So what do you get for your money then? Well, bucket-loads of gossip about the stars for one. Here you find out which celebrities have been up to naughty things, which one wasn't wearing any knickers at the latest film premiere, or what Jordan has been up to. She features quite heavily in this magazine, you'll be shocked to hear. Along the line of celebrity ...

Advantages: Celebs, gossip, photos Disadvantages: Not high standard
The time is NOW Now magazine is a celebrity gossip magazine. It costs £1.30 per week. Now is my guilty coffee break pleasure. From looking at the front cover you will see that the magazine is always glossy and shiny and features about 6 or 7 celebrities all the front, all with various headline grabbing captions, teasing you into wanting to read more and thus having to buy the magazine. At £1.30 it is not as costly as some other gossip magazines, ... ...section tells you who is now dating who, who has broken up and who is back together etc. They have a few interviews in the magazine too where they will pick a celebrity from tv or the like and then ask them questions such as their current projects, what they are hoping to do in the future etc so if you like that person you can find out quite a bit about them. The other thing I like about this magazine is that they have a really good beauty section ...

Advantages: Good balance of celebs/real life Disadvantages: Same old stories
Now magazine is a weekly celebrity gossip magazine. It comes out every Thursday, and costs £1, which is around average for this genre of publication.
The magazine is printed on glossy paper, and is a good length - the paper is quite sturdy feeling unlike some others that have flimsy pages.
The cover always looks bright and vibrant, with one main cover story (which will usually be covered in the first couple of pages), and then some surrounding, ... ...of content, I find that Now has a good balance of celebrity gossip, interviews, real life stories, health, beauty, film and television reviews. The celebrity gossip is usually written in an unbiased manner (an exception to this is the recent coverage of Celebrity Big Brother), and longer articles are balanced well with shorter pieces of gossip.
The first four or five pages are usually taken up with the 'big' celebrity news stories of the week, followed ...

...down and think about it now (no pun intended), I don't think I'll really bother buying it in future. Both Heat and Closer magazines have more information, come out earlier in the week and so often scoop the exclusives, have tv listings, and more interesting articles so my opinion is, keep your £1.10 for Closer magazine and you'll still have 10p change. ...

Advantages: It's cheap Disadvantages: Where do I start...
If I have already read Heat earlier in the week, and need a celebrity fix, as I often do, I will grudgingly pick up Nowmagazine, which I think is far inferior to my beloved Heat, but it will do...
Nowmagazine, if you didn't know, is a weekly magazine costing £1.10, centred around the lives of celebrities, with a few real-life articles thrown in. Sorry to be harsh, but I don't care that Sarah Jones from Middlesex has lost ten stone since being divorced by her husband! Good on her, but I want to read about the celebrities, for God's sake! You do get the occasional interesting one, but as a whole, the real-life stories are tedious.
Anyway; the rest of the magazine. It's laid out in a simple, unremarkable layout, quite easy to read, without a particular colour scheme, but could be more inventive! It isn't eye-catching or shouts 'READ ...

Answer: Actually, not what you think it may be, but alas, in fact, NOWmagazine!!!
From the relative importance it obviously has in my sad, young life – NOWmagazine is a symbolic lifesaver. Yes, I have GCSE’s and A-levels and even a first-class degree but strangely by reading this magical mag, I have now grown to appreciate the privilege of knowing and seeing at first ...

Advantages: nice and glossy, cheap Disadvantages: maybe too repetitve if read often
I've only bought a few copies of Now and I really enjoyed reading it.
What I didn't realise is that it has been around for some years.
Iam normally too busy buying Take a Break and Chat to notice others.
I actually bought it at Manchester airport I was looking for something cheap and cheerful.
The cover attracted me as it is very glossy and has gossipy headlines.
The price of 95p is very reasonable compared to some some magazines which are full of adverts.
On this weeks issue's front cover it shows Mel B bursting out of her dress, not that I'm interested in that of course, there is Bridget Jones actress (Rene'e Zellweger) looking very frail and waif like.
She really doesn't look good. Inside it shows her at three different stages of her weight, she is dressed in a bunny girls outfit on one, there she doesn't look too bad ...
