I have had my Numarks around a year now and I have to say they are one of the best purchases I have ever made!
I started out like many using the Technic 1210's (as everybody does) and then decided I needed a change because whilst Numark were adding loads of extra features, torque and style to their range each year, Technics stayed where they always have been as the reliable choice for any pro DJ.
Lets start with all the features that the Numarks have:
- Direct drive ultra high torque open motor ( 3.7 kgf-cm Peak) - Straight and S-shaped tone arms included - Solid core steel top, rubber base - Interchangeable pitch fader and button cartridges for club and battle style - Detachable power and audio connections - Removable target light w/ super bright white LED - Blue illuminated display w/ 10, 20 and 50% pitch range, 33-45-78 RPM, reverse, adjustable brake and start-up times - Digital out, line output, key lock - Straight or "S" shaped tone arm - Solid di-cast aluminium chasis with rubberised base - Digital display
for pitch and BPM - Variable pitch fader range 8 / 10 / 20 / 50 % - Quartz lock - Key control (line and digital output only) - SPDIF Digital output - Line or Phono level output - Replaceable / repositionable pitch fader and control buttons - 33 / 45 / 78 rpm - reverse mode - Adjustable start and stop - 2 start / stop buttons - Replaceable cue lamp
Now I will try to the best of my DJing knowledge tell you about each of the main important functions and why it is good!:
High torque open end motor: This is one of the most powerfull decks on the market today. The torque (or the speed at which the table starts spinning) is so high that as soon as you let go of the vinyl it starts playing where as on lesser models you have to give it a second or two to gert the record upto speed.
This is good because it is easier to "cue up" songs (hold and release a track on the right beat) for mixing and also makes for good scratching as you know the record is going to pull against your hand hard.
Straight and S-shaped arms included: Good because the s-shaped arm does not fit on all deck types. You get both free with these decks. The s-shaped arm is better for scratching as it hold the record at an angle so when scratching you should (and in my experience this is true) not get much skipping of the track your scratching.
Straight arms are the standard for non scratching dj's and some say are easier to use, although I much prefer my s-shape for scratching reasons.
Interchangable pitch faders and button cartridges for club and battle style: This is a big plus, basically you can change round the pitch controls and on/off button controls dependant on your djing style. Standard set-up is how you would imagine with the record platter on the left and arm on the right and on/off buttons on the side.
The TTX also allows battle position however when you turn the deck around and have them "long ways" where the arm is now at the top and record platter beneath it with the on/off and pitch controls at the bottom of the decks to make it easier to do more advanced scratching and mixing (kills, switches, reverses) whilst in competition.
10, 20 and 50% pitch range, 33-45-78 RPM, reverse, adjustable brake and start-up times: Great range of pitches and RPM so you will never find a record that does not play on this baby! 78RPM is one you do not here of often but there are some hard dance tracks out there i beleive which need this option so it's good that you have it and not many others do!!!
- Quartz lock - Key control (line and digital output only): Probably this decks main event and biggest attraction is the quartz and key locks. Basically the quartz lock will hold a record at a certain pitch (0%) (or speed) so that it is easier to mix songs together. Sometimes it is hard to get a track playing at exactely the right speed (0%) so this is a great feature.
Key lock is where the magic happens though. The user can set a pitch and press the key lock and it will hold the vocals of the track your spinning at exactely that speed. Now you can change the pitch of the back beat to match a slower or faster song without the vocals going into slow mo or chipmunk voices!!!
Makes mixing so easy and allows you to do combinations that you would never thought were possible and ultimately makes you a better dj!
Was really the only reason I bought these as no other deck has this feature! Although a word of warning, you need a digital mixer as well but well worth it!
All parts replaceable: All the parts on these decks are replaceable should you break something which is nice to know. I have replaced a pitch control which i broke (DOH!), quickly and easily and I do know you can replace bulbs and lamps easily also.
Reverse mode: For advanced Dj moves, the reverse button allows the user to play a record backwards either for effects during mixing or even good for getting into position on a track or "cueing".
So with all those features you can tell it is something special! In my opinion and other dj's that have used my decks I would say that this is easily the best deck out there available at it's price (around £330 each) and is much better than my old Technics 1210's.
If you are considering playing safe and getting the Technics then please reconsider! Get these and if you still can not DJ well with all these features (especially key lock) then do not bother trying anymore!
Forgot to mention looks in all of that above! They look like something out of star wars and are absolutely beautiful. All the displays are LCD and digital and have a cool blue neon glow effect! Definately makes you stand out from those boring standard decks and they also match so much better with todays modern electronics.

Good review. Torque is actually a measure of rotational force and is calculated by multiplying the force applied by the distance to the pivot. I always thought that the straight tone arm was used for scratching because it reduced inward tracking forces, and the s-shaped for mixing and blending? Maybe i was wrong!
