Having stormed through a quick succession of 4 vacuum cleaners in as many years, I asked a friend (who also happened to be a cleaner) what she used at home.
Well, it was like opening the floodgates. After running through what she categorised as rubbish (3 models of which I'd previously owned) she said that any self-respecting cleaner could only recommend the Henry Numatic.
She'd had hers for about 6 years and it was still going strong. She used it both bagless and with the Numatic bags (which she bought on ebay!).
So all things being equal we decided that a hepa-filter, whirlwind, bagless, pet-hair-sucking vacuum cleaner was a gimmick of the past and we'd try a Henry.
Even choosing which model was good fun too, as you even have a choice of colour-ways; red, yellow, green, blue and a recent pink addition! We opted for the British Racing Green variety (which wasn't exactly the true colour - he's more of an emerald green, but I don't want to split hairs!) and Henry arrived and has been here ever since!
-Dimensions-
This particular model's number is HRV200-22.
It weighs 6.6kg (and is not difficult to lug up and down stairs)
Dimensions are: 340 x 340 x 370mm but as it's a barrel shape it won't sit on a stair whilst you vacuum around it unless you balance it on the step above and wedge it with your leg. If you have a turn in your stairs, that works well.
The cord is long enough (at 10 metres) to start hovering upstairs if you plug into a socket on your landing, work your way downstairs and carry on for most of the house before having to unplug it! Numatic claim the cleaning range is 31.8m and I'd say that's pretty accurate!
The hose is 2.4 metres long.
It has a pretty powerful 1200w motor. It's not hugely noisy either.
It holds a fair bit of muck too between empties with a 9-litre capacity.
And comes with the manufacturer's 2-year warranty.
-Appearance-
He's actually quite cute. Barrel-like body in your chosen colourway for the bottom half, with a face and the hose looks like his nose. Then the top, which you unclip to replace the vacuum bag or empty out if you're going bagless, is black and has his (or her) name!
It essentially resembles a bowler-hatted gent.
It has a flip up carry handle, which is very sturdy - it runs round half the top of the vacuum cleaner and a useful cord rewind and storage system - manual too, not a press button (3 of which broke on me on other vacuum cleaners!)
-Quality-
Excellent for pet hair, shedding rugs (and boy have we got one of those), good up to edges (which was a big bug-bear of mine with the Dyson), the main brush has a foot operated "switch" of sorts which raises a set of brushes which give the carpet a good brush and pulls out hair and lint which get stuck to the pile - it's essentially for long or short carpets, but it's a good restorer for carpets that are a bit "flat" too.
It's also great on wooden or laminate floors. I have a wood floor in my kitchen and laminate in our family room and it is perfectly happy picking up bits and pieces, food - even dried out pasta (shame on me!) or dead leaves from one of our houseplants is not a problem.
The filter is not quite as good as the Dyson, but it's not far off, there's no dust blow-back like you see on some and it's at least half the price of the basic Dyson.
It comes with a small set of cleaning heads.
-Use-
Plug it in and vacuum up that dirt. It's very simple to operate.
You will know when to empty it as the suction starts to decrease (although not hugely).
-Cost-
We bought ours on-line from Argos for £89 (my model is currently on there for £93.87) - and that was just over a year ago. And having had a trawl around t'internet, prices seem to have remained the same. The best deal I could find today was with www.cleanstore.co.uk £88.95 with 5 free bags and free delivery. Even Amazon marketplace does them now (£88.90).
Vacuum cleaner bags (which I buy on ebay - although we're only on our 3rd bag!) are £3.50 + p&p for a pack of 10 - usually around £5.99.
I also managed to source the flexible hose which managed to get broken when poor old Henry was unceremoniously shoved under the stairs. Again, ebay - £7.50 + p&p.
-Try them-
I don't think test drives are an option!
There are other Numatic models including a wet and dry version, and "extra" version, a turbo version, one with an Airo pet hair brush option, a total all-in-one with carpet cleaning….they even have different names - there's George, James, Charles and now even a Hetty!
Numatic has a great website where you can meet the family and see which one might suit your lifestyle!
http://www.numatic.co.uk/ (go to the Home option on the right of the screen).
So, if your vacuum cleaner breaks down and you want something reliable, that does what it says on the can and that even cleaners recommend, go get a Henry (or one of his brothers)!
Thanks for reading my review - I hope it was useful.

Henry the cleaner . . .
Review of Numatic HVR 200 Henry by
smudgeybabes
Advantages: Suction is brilliant.
Disadvantages: Looks are a little industrial.
...on the very robust Henry Numatic model HVR 200. You will know it as soon as you see it as it has a smiley face, and comes in four colours, red green blue & yellow, well now they have added another to the range - PINK!!! Technically this one is called HETTY, but it is identical otherwise.
The shape is cylindrical, but not laid down, it is upright, like an oil drum, and has a buffer ring surrounding it, which does not mark walls. It is mounted on ... ...are built in Britain by Numatic International, in Somerset actually.
The cheapest I have seen these is under £75 which I think us a bargain, bearing in mind it will last you many years. I have actually seen it advertised for a gigantic £138! and hope nobody has paid even close to that.
I usually list all the contact details, spares, repair locations etc. but in this case see below as the company has it's own website containing all this information, ...

Henry vacuum cleaner
Review of Numatic HVR 200 Henry by
tvfanofbath
Advantages: Well made, reasonably priced, brilliant suction, quiet, good tools.
Disadvantages: Hose could stretch more, poor manual
I've just bought a Henry after a long but fairly unhappy time with a Dyson DC01 (heavy, noisy, expensive, a nightmare to empty), and now I wish I'd bought the Henry in the first place. The suction is amazing - this is the first cleaner I've used where it's necessary to use the suction-reducing controls because it sticks too tightly to the carpet otherwise. It seems to capable of picking up things that other cleaners can't (including coins, so beware!), ... ...into its tube by sheer suction power. The main floor attachment doesn't quite clean to the edge, although approaching the skirting board head-on does the job. Although the suction is reducing as the bag fills, it's still very strong and much better than my Dyson with its filters half-clogged. The Henry's also very quiet, and light enough to carry easily. Its cord is very long, and winds smoothly (though not automatically) back into the machine. The ...

Little Henry Will Get The Job Done
Review of Numatic HVR 200 Henry by
Surj1
Advantages: Very Easy To Use, Compact Design, Microflo Bags, Cleaning Range 31.8m & Variety of Heads
Disadvantages: None
...think everyone should have a Numatic HVR 200 'little' Henry in there home. I've had this vacuum cleaner for a few years now and has never let me down. Don't be fooled by its size and smiley face, it's got some serious pulling power. The design of the vacuum cleaner is compact and can be easily stored. It has a power on/off switch and handle for carrying on the top. The body is where the bag is located and all the dust will be sucked up into it with ... ...Henry comes in 4 different colours, red, blue, green and yellow. The 'R' in the model number simply states this as being red which is the common colour for Henry. The actual handle is adjustable using 3 tubes which are very easy to use and comfortable.
You get a variety of heads with the vacuum cleaner for different surfaces. Also for delicate surfaces it has a hi-low switch which allows you to lower the suction power. The Henry takes Microflo bags ...

HAPPY WITH HENRY
Review of Numatic HVR 200 Henry by
stevehumph
Advantages: Powerful, low maintenance, Simple
Disadvantages: Can be a bit awkward
I have been the proud owner of a Henry for over two years and in my opinion it is one of the best values for money products I have purchased. It is simple to operate with a large red power button as its only control. It has a large capacity bag and is very simple to empty. The power lead is exceptionally long and winds in and out so you don't have lengths of cable all over the floor. The motor is powerful and suction is extremely good. It picks up ... ...and tiles. I also have no problems using it to clean out our car. To top it all off Henry's smiley face also oozes character. The only slight negative is he is a little bit tall which occasionally means he can topple over if you're not careful. I would have no reservation in recommending Henry. ...

Henry the First
Review of Numatic HVR 200 Henry by
Stg27
Advantages: Reliability and effectiveness
Disadvantages: Weight
...bit of kit. Made by Numatic in Chard, Somerset, purchasing one of these will also help what is left of the UK's manufacturing industry.
The overall design hasn't altered in years which says something about the quality and reliability of this cleaner. The Henry can be used bagless or bags can be purchased separately and the bags are widely available in local shops and also the DIY chains. We pay £6.50 for 10. Probably the only negative point is that ... ...his wheels but may be a bit cumbersome to carry for some people.
The power cord is wound into the unit lid and is fully retractable. However for longer duration uses it is a good idea to unwind the whole cable to avoid overheating. The cable length is about 5 metres in total and I can manage all 3 floors of our house from a ground floor socket. As well as the on/off switch Heenry also has a Hi/Lo power option. Selecting Lo reduces the operation ...
