This is my personal opinion on the rugged Numatic vacuum cleaner called Henry. You will recognise it as soon as you see it because it is the one with the smiley face. This model is available in four different colours, red, green, blue, and the less common yellow.
The Numatic Henry is marketed as a barrel vacuum cleaner and is cylindrical, it stands upright, and floats on superb castors, it also has a rubber fender around it, so does not mark walls. It is very easy to move about. The first experimental models were built using old oil drums.
The suction, is brilliant, the cable is simply wound up on it's own drum by turning a handle, a selection of tools are supplied, plus a filter, and the machine itself is light enough to be carried up the stairs. It is not too bulky either. There are different settings on the "turbo head" for carpets or tiles and laminated floors etc.
If anything negative has to be said, it is just that to vacuum the stairs, you need to balance the machine on one step, whilst holding the machine stable with your knee. The hose will reach up from the downstairs, and down from the upstairs, but is a bit of a stretch. You will discover that the bag (should you decide to use one) is quick to fill, although it does hold an impressive nine litres of dust. This cleaner is also rather "industrial" looking, but that is about all I can find wrong with this beauty.
Weighing in at less than seven Kgs, this plastic machine has a massive 100 watts of power. The length of the hose is 2.4 metres, and has a cable length of 10 metres. The usual tools are included. The warranty is a satisfactory two years, and the instruction manual is very good. These are Made in England by Numatic International.
The cheapest I have seen these is less than £75 and many places offer then under £100, which I think is a bargain, bearing in mind that this should last you many years. I have actually seen this model advertised for a whopping £138! I am just hoping nobody has paid even close to that. These machines are a good buy second hand, and spares are available at reasonable prices. You can get spares for any model made, even ones from 1969. You may even want one to use downstairs, keeping your old one for the bedrooms.
I have used one of these at work for quite a few years, and it gets my seal of approval.
The company has a rather good website, there are some very good graphics, take a look for yourself:- http://www.numatic.co.uk To find your local dealer try ringing 01460 269469
