...The nurse advised us that Nurofen provided a childrens form of ibuprofen that was available over the counter without a prescription. And Nurofen for Children has been a regular purchase ever since and we tend to use it in preference to the paracetamol based Calpol.
How does it work?
Ibuprofen is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) which inhibits the production of prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins ... ...and pain.
Nurofen for Children comes in a liquid suspension ideal for very young children, it is white in colour and smells and tastes of oranges. It is available in in a 100ml, 150ml bottles and in boxes of 16 x 5ml sachets, the bottles have a small syringe provided for feeding to babies, the sachets have a measuring double spoon for a 2.5ml and 5ml dose.
A 5ml dose will contain 100mg of Ibuprofen.
I first became aware of Ibuprofen suspension after rushing my eldest son to hospital with suspected meningitis a few years ago. He was running a very high temperature, complaining his head hurt and became delirious in the car on the way to hospital. Fortunately our local hospital has a specialist A & E department for children and he received immediate attention and was given a dose of ibuprofen suspension. Within 20 minutes, he transformed from being listless and drowsy to his usual self and indulged himself with the toys on the department and after a couple of hours observation was allowed to go home. The nurse advised us that Nurofen provided a childrens form of ibuprofen that was available over the counter without a prescription.
Prostaglandins are produced by our bodies when we get injured or become ill, they cause the area affected to swell and thus cause pain, prostaglandins in the brain will increase body temperature and thus cause headaches and fever. By blocking the production Ibuprofen reduces swelling, body temperature and pain.

A 5ml dose will contain 100mg of Ibuprofen.
The sachets tend to work out as most expensive option and cost between £2.79 and £3.99 per box, whilst the 100ml bottle costs around £3.99 and the 150ml bottle £4.59. The sachets tend to be the most readily available at supermarkets and grocery stores. The bottles have child proof screw caps but do tend to get gunged up and sticky with use.
Ibuprofen does tend to have more side affects than paracetamol based products, for children with asthma, liver, heart or bowel problems your doctor should be consulted before taking. Also for babies under 3 months only use if told to by your doctor. If symptoms persist consult your doctor.
There is a sheet with full instuctions inside the box as well as briefer instructions on the outside packaging. Please ensure that you read the instructions carefully before using and don't exceed the stated dosage.
Nurofen for Children is very sweet, despite it containing no sugar. To an adults taste it is quite sickly-sweet. But children do like the taste of sweet foods and sometimes getting a child to take horrible tasting medicine is near impossible. Although on the opposite side of this is that every time my 3 year old daughter sees the box she feigns a cough and asks for her nice medicine. It can be quite difficult explaining that medicine is for when you are poorly. Take care and make sure that all medicines are kept well out of reach of little ones, especially little ones with a sweet tooth.
Advantages: Fast acting, effective, easy to use Disadvantages: Doesn't last for 8 hours as indicated
...ago, a hospital doctor recommended Nurofen for Children as a fast and effective method of lowering my son's temperature when he was suffering from teething. Assuming a doctor was a fairly trustworthy resource, I took her advice and headed for the nearest Boots. Since that day, my cabinet has always been stocked with Nurofen and I would like to tell you why.
***About the Nurofen Brand***
Nurofen is made by a subsidiary of The Boots Company, Crookes ... ...are now eleven variants of Nurofen each of which contain the active ingredient, Ibuprofen. ***What it says it does***
Nurofen contains Ibuprofen as the key ingredient and therefore promises to offer faster-acting relief from temperatures, pain, swelling and injuries after just 15 minutes and to continue working for up to 8 hours.

Advantages: Works quickly, pleasent taste and can be used with calpol. The bottle version also comes with a handy syringe, which means less mess. Disadvantages: It's really sweet and sticky and the box falls apart on contact!!
...for advice I was given Nurofen for children in a 100ml bottle. Now I swear by it. Obviously I try not to use it too much and give Eabha a bit of time to try and let her body sort out what’s going on itself, but when it gets to much my medicinal superman comes out of the basket at super fast speed. What is it?
It’s a medicine for children from 6months called an oral suspension. It is stated to be for fever and pain which happens a lot to children ... ...Sounds odd but it makes Nurofen for children products instantly recognisable. It has Nurofen for children in red against a silver background with a yellow v shape and the round Nurofen symbol. It is then orange strips from there down. The sachets are exactly the same.
The boxes that they both come in are very flimsy. Once they are opened with and tampered with they just fall apart. It makes it essential that the instructions are written on the bottles ...

Advantages: Long lasting, quick acting, tastes nice, easy to use Disadvantages: Can be expensive. Need to use spoon rather than oral syringe
Nurofen for children has been a god send to me. It is a great alternative to the paracetamol based products for children such as Calpol etc. What is it?
Basically it is a oral suspension designed for babies and children from the age of 3 months old. It is colour free, sugar free and flavoured orange. The sachets come in 5ml and contain 100mg of ibuprofen.
What is it used for?
The main use of nurofen for children is to help ease pain associated ... ...On the back of the nurofen for children pack is a age chart which tells you how much to give you child and how often to give it. Before you open the sachets you massage them with your fingers so the suspension if mixed before opening. There is a double ended spoon provided in the box with one end marked 2.5ml and the other 5ml. You open the sachet and pour the required amount into the correct side of the spoon according to the dosage given in the ...

Advantages: fast acting, tastes nice Disadvantages: often used incorrectly
Nurofen for Children has been my saviour this last week. It was prescribed by the hospital after a visit with Zach. He has a nasty case of tonsilitis and his glands are swollen almost as much as if he had mumps, with the discomfort to go with it! Poor little chappy! Nurofen is not a medicine I usually buy. Calpol is my regular brand but as it was prescribed and therefore free, I thought it was worth a try!
Nurofen is well known for there adult tablets. ... ...be fiddly. The label has Nurofen clearly marked in red letters on a grey background. The rest of the label is oranges and yellows. The medicine comes complete with a perfect measuring guide. It is a bit like a syringe but it is just a tube!?! It fits into the top of the bottle. YOu tip the bottle upside down and pull out the plunger. The syringe fills easily and with no mess. Ihave attached a picture at the bottom of the page.
You can also buy 5ml ...

...smoking!!) and we had no Nurofen Liquid Tablets, which are my chosen pain relief. Looking in the medicine cupboard for alternatives, there was calpol or kids nurofen liquid.
Thinking that Calpol would not be effective enough on an adult's headache I plumped for the kids nurofen.
The Box/Bottle:
This comes in a plastic bottle (good for recycling) encased in a cardboard box. The box and bottle is quite a bright orange colour round three quarters ... ...portion. It has Nurofen, in big red letters and the red, orange and yellow circle that is Nurofen's trade picture. Underneath it says Fever & Pain, from 6 months and there is a picture of two children sitting and playing under this. All round the other sides of the box are the dosage instructions and so on which I will cover later. The bottle has a childproof lid on it which is hard for kids to open but reasonably easy for an adult. (Unlike some ...

Nurofen singles
I find these sachets of medicine useful for little miss especially when on the move, because they are much more convenient than bottles.
They are available in the following flavours:
? Nurofen For Children Singles Orange Flavour
? Nurofen For Children Singles Strawberry Flavour
I tend to buy the orange flavour ones because they seem to be the easiest to find, and so this review concentrates on the orange flavour medicine.
HOW DO THEY WORK AND WHO ARE THEY FOR?
Nurofen for Children Singles provides relief by changing the body's response to high temperature, pain and swelling. They provide fast effective reduction in temperature, sooth away pain from dental pain, headaches and cold and flu symptons. They are suitable for use with children from the age of 3 months and are colour and sugar free.

Advantages: Easy to apply, numbs the area immediately Disadvantages: None I can think of
You know the signs, really rosy cheeks, tugging of the ears, fingers or anything they can get their hands on straight in the mouth and those yukky nappies.
Well I tried the teething rings, Calgel, Bonjela, Calpol, Nurofen for children, Ashton and Parsons powders and they all kept my son Jake quiet for a short time. However, this soon wore off and he would be crying again. Then a friend recommended Anbesol liquid. I must admit, I had never heard of the product, I hadn't seen it advertised anywhere and it was never in the shops by the other teething products. But as Jake was suffering I thought I would give it a go.
All I can say is what a great find!!! The liquid comes in a small 6.5ml bottle and is applied to the gums using a clean finger. Remember to be quick though, as my son often nips me with the teeth he already has ...
