-------- If you know me personally, you'll know that I used to live on aspirins, not in a creepy addict kinda way, no, I suffered from migraine for almost a year, actually I still do, but that year I had a headache almost every day, can you imagine..the spookiest thought crossed my mind..'what if'..*shivers*, let's not go there now. Obviously I tried lots and lots of different brands and different kinds, from the normal 'old fashioned' aspirin, to the latest nifty invention 'the liquid capsule'.
I will start this op with some basic info about nurofen and their available variants; this can also be found on the nurofen website, but if you can't be bothered to make a few clicks, here's an overview of the information found on the website.
BASICS --------
Nurofen is produced by Crookes Healthcare, part of The Boots Company, in the UK. There are now eleven variants of Nurofen avaliable which all contain the active ingredient ibuprofen. If you haven't used Nurofen before, make sure you read the label, you could be allergic to some of the ingredients. (Or ask your pharmacist or doctor for more information before taking it.)
VARIANTS --------
I will only describe the variants which I have used myself.
- Tablets (Tablets contain ibuprofen which provides relief by changing the body’s response to pain, swelling and temperature)
- Caplets (These are similar to the tablets but are oval in shape so that they can be easily swallowed)
- LIQUID CAPSULES (Gelatin capsules that are easy-to-swallow, contain a liquid form of ibuprofen)
- Meltlets (Nurofen Meltlets are self-dissolving tablets, which can be taken without water)
- Plus (Powerful pain relief through the dual action of ibuprofen and codeine)
- Long Lasting (Specially formulated to provide up to 12 hours relief from pain, but please not that these contain 300mg of ibuprofen!)
Also available: - Maximum Strength Gel - Cold & Flu - Nurofen for Children - Migraine Pain
All the variants are available at your local drugstore, without a prescription.
LOOKS --------
The package of Nurofen has it's own unique style; a silver coloured box with the word ‘Nurofen’ written out in bright red. On the centre you will see a circle in the colours red, orange, yellow and white. The name of the variant (tablets, caplets) is in the lower left corner, and a picture of the tablet (or whatever variant you're looking at) itself in the lower right corner. In every country the layout and the colours are the same, so if you're on holiday in the middle of nowhere, you'll recognize it immediately..hopefully.
The capsules itself are oval in shape, and bright transparent red. Please mind that little childeren might think that it's some sort of candy, so put them in a place were they can't reach them. You can also squeeze the capsules, because they're made from gelatin. This gelatin doesn't really have a function, it only holds the liquid ibuprofen, which you can actually see if you turn the capsule upside down.
The following part may seem a bit too obvious, but I decided to put it in anyway.
WHEN DO YOU USE IT? --------
Well, obviously you use a pain killer to kill the pain. Nurofen has a wide range of variants, but in my opinion, you'll just have to try them, in order to find out if they work for you. I think this is very personal, because everybody responds differently. I will list some of the conditions from which the pain can be relieved. (it will also lower your body temperature, in case of a fever) - Headache - Migraine - Period pain - Dental pain and so on, I guess this is so obvious that I really don't see the point in listing all of them ;-)
DOSAGE --------
The recommended dosage for adults is two tablets at first, and swallow them with water. If you feel it's necessary, you may take one or two capsules every four hours. But please note that you should not take more than six liquid capsules within 24 hours. The capsules are not suitable for children under 12, but Nurofen has made a special variant for childeren; which has the very original name 'Nurofen for childeren'. ;-)
I have added a list of guidelines at the bottom of this op, you will find some more information about allergic reactions and other warnings there.
Like most drugs available, there might be side effects to taking ibuprofen. These could include rashes, diarrhea, wheezing, headaches and stomach pain. In all those years I have taken ibuprofen, I've never experienced any of these side effects, but it compulsory for the company to mention them.
PRICES ---------
Nurofen Liquid Capsules are available in almost every drugstore, however, I’m not really into the UK prices, but I’ve read somewhere that the 16 pack costs £2.49. This is fairly expensive, but if this is the variant that works for you, I guess it could be worth the money. ( I don’t live in the UK, and I really couldn’t find more information, sorry!)
DOES IT REALLY WORK? --------
Well, like I mentioned before, this is really personal, because each person responds different to medications. I'll have to admit, I was tempted by the looks and the fact that it was supposed to work fast. Well, it didn't work for me at all. I suffered from severe headaches, and I always used the normal Nurofen tablets, which really work great for me, but the liquid variant just didn't seem to have enough 'power' for me. I'll just stick to the 'old fashioned' tablets, because apparently a fancy look just isn't enough for me. If you feel the need to email them, for more information, I've found this adress: info.UK@crookes.co.uk Or check out their website at http://www.nurofen.co.uk
Thank you for reading this op, and I've listed some guidelines below, which can also be found on the nurofen website.
xxx wenSOME GUIDELINES --------
1. Always read the label carefully, to ensure the product is suitable for your use. 2. Don't take more than the recommended dose. 3. Remember that many medicines, especially cold and flu remedies, contain pain relieving ingredients. So when using more than one type of product you should monitor your intake carefully. 4. You should not use Nurofen if you have ever had a stomach ulcer, or are allergic to ibuprofen or aspirin. If you are allergic to or taking any other painkiller, pregnant, or suffer from asthma speak to your doctor before taking ibuprofen. 5. If in doubt about a product’s suitability for you, ask the pharmacist for advice.
Advantages: Fast working. Disadvantages: Fairly expensive, burning like sensation when swallowing.
...the shop where I work, Nurofen Liquid Capsules.
Like all the other Nurofen products, the main active ingredient is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as asprin. NSAIDs are painkillers that work by affecting the chemical, prostaglandin, that cause inflammation in your body.
With period pains, the cramps are caused by too much prostaglandin in your system which makes your uterus' muscles contract more strongly ... ...bad period pains. Nurofen Liquid Capsules are easy to swallow gelatine capsules that contain a liquid form of ibuprofen. Because the ibuprofen is liquid it allows the drug to absorb into the body much quicker than normal tablets. According to the packet, Nurofen provides relief from headaches, period pains, dental pain, migraine, backache, muscular pain, rheumatic pain, neuralgia, cold and flu symptoms, and fever.
Dosage for adults is two tablets ...

...returned with a packet of Nurofen Liquid Capsules. I have tried the Nurofen tablets before for Migraine relief but I had never come across the Liquid Capsules before.
First Impressions
Well my very first impression was one of shock at the price. £2.69 for a tiny packet of just 10 Capsules. Anyway with the pain from my wrist starting to kick in with a vengeance I quickly opened the box and was actually quite impressed with this choice of purchase ... ...forms.
The Packaging
Nurofen Liquid Tablets come in a small compact shiny silver cardboard box with the word "Nurofen" written across the top left hand corner in large capital red letters. Beneath this it says "Ibruprofen 200mg" and in the top right hand corner of the box it says "Liquid Capsules." There is a very eye-catching picture of a round target on the front of the packet which is in bright rings of Red, Orange and Yellow with a White centre. ...

...have used a lot of Nurofen in the past and when I saw Nurofen Capsules on the market I wondered what they were and how effective they were as a painkiller. Advantages: Absorded very fast, easy to swallow Disadvantages: can upset the stomach
Suffering from sinusitus means that I have exhausted the usefulness of parecetemol. Nurofen's main ingredient is ibuprofen, an anti inflamatory. These are now the only thing that touch my head pain. Being an anti-inflamatory, they can also be taken for joint pain, although a gel, for me is more effective and doesn't irritate the stomach.
Packaging
Rectagle, silver cardboard box. TEnds to disintegrege if carried in your trouser pocket. The pills ... ...if they care squashed.
Price
These are by no means cheap. Due to legislation, painkillers can no longer be sold in bottles of 100. Drug comapines have got wise to this and have drastically reduce the quantities with very little reduction in price.
I paid 2.79 the these capsules, a packet of 12. You can get unbranded or supermarket branded ibuprofen for half this price. Effectiveness
As I say, these are the only thing that work on my sinus pain. ...

Advantages: Beats pain fast, easy to swallow Disadvantages: A bit expensive
The box was similar to that pictured above, but with a few differences. The main difference is that the packet I bought contains 16 tablets - or 'caplets' as they like to call them - not 12 as the picture above shows. The box also looks a bit different. Rather than a pattern of white lines, there is a silver tick-like mark which runs diagonally across the box and through the ring of coloured, concentric circles. Some of the wording on the box is also different.
PRICE
The box of 16 Caplets cost me £1.95, which is a lot more than you would expect to pay for a box of paracetamol or Anadin, but not surprising because Nurofen contains the stronger, pain killing ingredient, Ibuprofen.
Other varieties of Nurofen you can buy are:
Nurofen Pain Killer (16 Tablets) = £1.59*
Nurofen Pain Killer (12 Tablets) = £1.25*

supposedly able to take these without water, but personally I would rather struggle with the tablets as they taste disgusting;
* Nurofen Caplets - Little oval tablets, and much flatter. Presumably easier to swallow (they contain the same product as the tablets).
* Nurofen Gel Capsules - little red tablets that can contain liquid ibuprofen that supposedly work faster - I don't know what colouring is in them but it really upset me.
* Nurofen Syrup for children (formally Junifen) - wonderful stuff - it is safe for all children over 6 months, whilst bearing in mind the normal contraindications for this drug, i.e. stomach ulcers, asthma and a sensitivity to aspirin (ASPIRIN SHOULD NEVER BE GIVEN TO CHILDREN UNDER 12). The bottle advises that it reduces temperatures in children, although my GP refutes this in adults, and advises combining it ...
