UPDATE: 23 June 2002
Packing for my jolly holidays, and filling up the first aid kit (having had my other one stolen in Lanzarote last year) - today was the day to splash out on the medication. I was stunned to discover that Nurofen Plus can no longer be purchased in pack sizes larger than 24, and the pharmacist is only allowed to sell one pack per customer - I knew I hadn't seen my beloved holiday pack of 72's available, but thought this was just a stock shortage. It transpires that the reason behind this change of heart and legislation is all to do with junkies!!!! - would you believe that they have been splitting the tablets
and extracting the codeine to get a hit - a pretty weird and expensive way to do things I should imagine as one tablet only contains 12.8mg of codeine.
Caused me no end of headaches as I had visions of going from pharmacy to pharmacy to stock up - making me feel like the guilty one. Thakfully after recognising that we were really going on holiday (we spent somewhere in the region of £60) - he did relent on this occasion as there were two of us - but certainly a fact to be aware of if you use this medication - and no you cannot purchase it overseas - I can see that being the case here shortly.
=========================Nurofen Plus can be purchased over the pharmacy counter at £2.45 for 12, £4.49 for a pack of 24.
INGREDIENTS IBUPROFEN Each tablet of Nurofen Plus contains 200mg of Ibuprofen (from the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) Family), and marvellous for reducing pain associated with headaches, period pains, neuralgia, migraine and tooth-ache to name a few.
The drug is not effective against reducing high temperatures and is contraindicated in asthma suffers and also those with stomach ulcers because of its irritant effect on the stomach lining, which is why you are always advised to combine taking it with food.
It can be safely taken alongside paracetamol (speak to your pharmacist), but should not be taken alongside aspirin (another NSAID).
CODEINE Nurofen Plus contain the highest level of Codiene Phosphate(12.8mg per tablet) that can be purchased over the counter without prescription. There is some scepticism from the medical profession over whether these combined drugs are actually more effective, although in my experience, I would say they definitely are. Beware if considering combining these with a paracetamol based product or cough medicine to ensure that there is no added codiene, of you could be in for a bit of a fun time.
Codeine is a fairly powerful narcotic analgesic which can have a sedative effect, quite a high potential for overdosing in large amounts and has the makings for dependency. In the relatively small amounts contained within Nurofen Plus, I should imagine that overdose risks would be low, but treat their use with caution and always read the label - the maximum recommended dosage is 6 in 24 hours.
Nurofen Plus can cause constipation in some people when taken for even a brief period of time because of the codeine. It is recommended that you avoid alcohol when taking them, both because of the increased risk of sedative effects from the combination of codeine and alcohol and also the increased risk of irritating the stomach lining through the combination of ibuprofen and alcohol.
I consider these to be on of the best OTC painkillers on the market. I took them for quite some time whilst waiting to go into hospital for an operation to quell my pain, and when I stopped taking them, I felt quite unwell for a period of time that had nothing to do with the source of the pain, which had by that point been completely removed. I was left feeling quite out of it for a few days, and felt like my body had been removed from my brain.
SUMMARY An excellent all round painkiller, that can be safely combined with some other drugs, but beware the codeine content. Watch out for contraindications such as asthma and stomach ulcers, if in doubt speak to your pharmacist.
NOTE: The combination of Ibuprofen and Codeine can only be purchased in the UK, NOT in Mainland Europe - so if you rely on these and are travelling, make sure you stock up before travelling.

Ibuprofen is an excellent analgesic. Unfortunately, Codeine is sold only by prescription here in the US. If these were available here in the US, I would definitely give them a try, as sometimes when pain is very severe, you need that extra kick to get rid of it. Excellent op! Ellen :)

I have tried these before, but usually use Anadin extra.
