Nurofen is about the most effective pain reliever available today over the counter. You can also get an extra strength painkiller version called Nurofen Plus. That is what this opinion is about.
The tablets come in packs of of 12,24 or 48 which is handy as you can plan your purchase around your illness. If you have a severe headache that should be gone in the morning, you only need the small packet. Obviously longer illnesses should consult a doctor.
The tablets are round in shape and are very easy to swallow as they are covered in a coating. Not like powdery aspirins that stick to your throat.
The pain relief is almost instant with these tablets. My wife suffers from really bad headaches and these are the only thing to combat the pain she is suffering.
However, we are not all lucky enough to be able to take them.
Im an asthmatic and im limited as to what I can take. Paracetamol are fine but anything that contains subsances based on Ibuprofen have to be avoided at all costs. This is because they work in a reverse effect to your inhalers. Rather than relieving the airways and removing the mucus secreted onto the lungs, this actually stimulates production. It does this to assist the body's natural reaction. Not good if you suffer from asthma. So if you suffer any reaction such as wheezing or go into Bronchospasm (Techy talk for us Asthmatics) stay well clear. It is also known to cause Gastric upset. So some people may get sick on it. You must also be careful not to drink Alcohol with it. The Ibuprofen accelerates and intensifies the effects of alcohol and leads to drowsiness.
So what can you take it for? Well. Headaches as mentioned. Flu like Symptoms. Colds. Temperatures. Any pain relief. This includes period pain. It is reccommended to ladies that suffer at the "time of the month" that Nurofen Plus can help with the effects.
I actually know my dentist reccommends it for toothache!
What does it contain: Ibuprofen. A powerful pain relieving chemical that lessens the sensitivity of the pain receptors.
Codeine. Acts in a similar way as an analgesic. It comes from Opium in nature but manufatured for medicine from morphine. It is a mild sedative to put you at ease.
Prices Well, Nurofen is not cheap. At £3 a box, they are certainly making a good mark up. You can get Ibuprofen tablets that work in a similar way for about half of the price Saying this they do get to the heart of the problem fast. I would suggest you try them as long as you are not allergic.

Good op, although a few minor points - they also come in packs of 72, the more you buy the cheaper they become - a 12 pack is £2.45, 24 pack - £4.45 - the codiene contained in them is the strongest you can buy without prescription (12.8mg/tablet) - codeine is not actually a sedative, although it can have a sedating effect, particularly when combined with other sedating drugs - also people should avoid taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach because it increases the risk of ulcers. As someone who used to manage an inventory of all drugs available from the pharmacy the mark-up isn't that good. This product can also not be purchased in mainland Europe, so if anyone relies on them, make sure to stock up before travelling.

I believe that something in Ibuprofen works as an anti-spasmodic, which is why it works for period pains. Great information with regard to asthmatics - my mother had chronic bronchitis, and used to go into bronchospasm quite often - she used to make ibuprofen for arthritis and we never knew about this contra indication! I get a tension headache every Saturday for some reason. I work for a call centre booking boating holidays and I work overtime, it gets that busy that I bring on the most awful headaches. Even Nurofen didn't shift it today.
Advantages: A very effective painkiller for a wide range of ailments. Disadvantages: can be addictive if taken for prolonged periods. Can cause some unpleasant side effects with some people.

Advantages: Quick and effective in dealing with migraine and tension headaches. Disadvantages: Make you incredibly drowsy. Codeine based medication so can become habit forming.
