~ ~ I'm a great believer in the beneficial effects of Aspirin.
This marvellous wee 'wonder drug' has been a fixture in my medicine cabinet for as far back as I can remember. I take a tablet every morning to help thin my blood, and thus aid my circulation, as being a smoker I worry about the dangers of blood clotting and possible stroke.
I find that it also helps the arthritis that I have in my hands, most probably as a result of too many cold mornings spent on golf courses over the years.

~ ~ But sometimes Aspirin just can't cut it, especially when it comes to severe pain, and then something a bit stronger is called for.
Nurofen Plus is a painkiller manufactured by a Nottingham company called Crooke's Healthcare, and distributed (at least here in Ireland) by Boot's Healthcare, based here in Clonskeagh, Dublin.
Its main ingredient is a drug called Ibuprofen, with a small amount of codeine thrown in.
It comes in tablet form, and is (as far as I'm aware) the strongest non-prescription painkiller that you can buy over the counter in your local chemist.

~ ~ The two main ingredients are both powerful painkillers.
Ibuprofen relieves the swelling, tenderness and pain associated with advanced arthritis, and also helps to alleviate the aches and pains caused by a cold or flu.
Its also commonly given to patients who have undergone surgery to help ease post-operative pain, and is useful as a painkiller for folks who suffer from back pain such as lumbago or sciatica.
Other uses include the relief of migraine headaches, period pain in women, and to help relieve pain after dental treatment.
Each tablet of Nurofen Plus contains 200mg of Ibuprofen.

~ ~ Codeine is a derivative of morphine, and is the most commonly used narcotic in the world. Each tablet of Nurofen Plus contains 12.5mg of codeine, and because of this great care must be taken not to take it for prolonged periods, as codeine is highly addictive. Three days is the recommended maximum period of usage without consultation with your doctor.
Just a little aside. I read a report in the newspaper recently that heroin addicts here in Ireland have been buying Nurofen Plus, as eight tablets is reckoned to give them as big a "hit" as a standard dose of heroin. (Whatever a standard dose of heroin is?!)
I should mention that Nurofen is NOT a cure for any of the ailments I've mentioned, but purely a way of relieving the pain symptoms by blocking the body's pain receptors.

~ ~ I find Nurofen great if I have a particularly bad bout of arthritis in my hands, which thankfully isn't that often. I also use it to relieve "stress" headaches, which unfortunately I get on a more regular basis, probably brought about by driving my taxi for prolonged periods in the jungle that is Dublin city traffic these days.
I've also witnessed it working very effectively in the case of post-operative pain with friends and family, although severe post-operative pain is probably relieved more effectively with a prescription drug called Ponstan.

~ ~ There are all sorts of dire warnings given about taking this painkiller.
It's not suitable for children under 12 years of age, and the maximum dosage is six tablets in a 24-hour period.
It's also not to be taken if you suffer from a stomach ulcer, or any other form of tummy complaint, or if you are allergic to aspirin or any other form of NSAID. (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug)
I'm not going to list all the warnings here, (I'd probably miss a few anyway) because it would take forever, and bore the pants of everyone in sight. (Myself included) And I have no medical qualifications, so all I am doing here is giving my OPINION and advice on the product.
Your pharmacist will give you advice if you're unsure of whether it's suitable for you or not, or you can look up the Nurofen website at
"http://www.nurofen.co.uk."

~ ~ Nurofen Plus comes in packets of either 12 or 24 tablets. For safety reasons your chemist will not sell you more than one large packet at a time.
Here in Ireland the cost is around €6.50 for the 24 tablet pack, and €3.50 for the smaller 12 tablet pack.
Highly recommended for pain relief by the mad cabbie.
But *DO* take care to follow the instructions for use very carefully, and never to exceed the recommended dosage.

It is the strongest non-prescription drug available, although Solpadeine now produce a paracetamol based drug with the same amount of codeine (12.8mg - not sure if there might be a slight difference through government regs), you cannot actually buy Nurofen Plus OTC in Spain as I discovered after having my bag stolen containing my box of these and a small amount of diazepam prescribed for a shoulder injury.
