I had a wisdom tooth removed today - 12/02/04 - and am suffering - a bit! - thanks to the wonders of Nurofen. I had so many horror stories told to me by people who had a wisdom tooth out. The agony, the pain, the swelling, the bruises..... and so on.
I actually felt quite upbeat about having the tooth taken out as I had had an x-ray and it had shown it to be growing into my other teeth along the lower left jaw. So I turned up at the surgery - not a standard dentist though I had to go to the specialist!!
I filled out the consent form and the medical information form and waited to be called. I had my gum frozen and then the tooth out. It was all over in about thirty minutes. No pain as my face was still frozen, which is an awful sensation.
The orthadontist had told me prior to removing the tooth, that I would need painkillers. He reccomended Nurofen Plus. He also said to take them as soon as I got home. You are supposed to go
home and straight to bed, but hey I have two children and a husband who need to be catered for!! He said a lot of people don't take the painkillers until the numbness has gone away, which is too late. By that stage major pain will have set in and painkillers, no matter how good, still take time to work.
So off I toddled with my prescription for antibiotics and a shopping list for Nurofen Plus. By the time I got to the pharmacy, my jaw had swollen and I looked like I had an orange stuffed in my cheek!! But still no pain as yet.
I handed over my prescription and then asked the assistant for a packet of Nurofen Plus. She asked what size so I said 'largest you've got, I've just had a wisdom tooth out'.
She picked up a packet of a different brand and said these were the strongest over the counter medicine that I could get, I'd prefer them. I said to her that the dental surgery had specifically mentioned Nurofen Plus, so I wanted those. She went off looking for advice and was told to sell me the Nurofen Plus, if that was what had been recommended to me.
£5.03!!
For 24 tablets!!
But I'm worth it so I paid up. I took two after I read the leaflet enclosed, when I got home. Dribble dribble. And then after 4 hours I took another two. The numbness had worn off an hour prior to the second batch of tablets and although I was in some discomfort, it wasn't as bad as I felt it could have been.
Will I be pain free? These tablets don't proclaim to be a miracle cure for pain, it says on the packet ' works both at the site of pain and reduces the body's response to pain signals'. And they do exactly that. If you want to be totally pain free, then numb your jaw for five days after having the tooth out!
What do they look like? The tablets themselves are easy enough to swallow, being smooth and approximately two centimetres long. They are white with a N+ printed on each tablet. They should be taken with water.
What can you take them for? Apart from dental pain, you can take them for migraine, headache, cramping period pain, back pain, neuralgia, rheumatic pain, feverishness, symptoms of cold and flu and muscular pain.
What is in them? Ibruprofen PhEur 200mg Codeine Phosphate PhEur 12.8mg Microcrystalline Cellulose Sodium Starch Glycollate Pregelatinised Starch Hypromellose Titanium Dioxide (E171) Talc
What size do they come in and how much? You can buy them in packs of 12, 24, 48, 72. I didn't see the prices of any other packets, so cannot say how much the others are. But if I paid £5.03 for 24, you can get a rough idea of how much the other sizes would be. Please tell me I wasn't ripped off I'll be really annoyed.
Where can you get them? You can buy these over the counter in a pharmacy so no need for a prescription. I've also seen them in Sainsbury's. I've never bought them before because my husband cannot take them. But these are for my use only.
Who can't take them? Anyone with an allergy or who reacts badly to aspirin, ibuprofen, codeine or any of the listed ingredients. Anyone who has had a worsening of asthma, allergies rash or an itchy, runny nose when taking ibuprofen, aspirin or similar. Anyone who had or has a stomach ulcer. Anyone who suffers from chronic constipation. Anyone who has difficulty with their breathing. Anyone under the age of 12.
Before taking these tell your doctor if: You have or had asthma. You have liver, kidney or heart problems. You are taking other medications and state what these are and their content. You have a thyroid disorder. You suffer from low blood pressure. You have raised intracranial pressure or a head injury. You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Dosage: Take one or two tablets with water and if necessary repeat this every four to six hours. Do not exceed six tablets in 24 hours. Not suitable for children under12.
Cautions: You can suffer dizziness or tiredness when taking these so make siure you do not have this side effect before driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcohol as this will enhance the effect. If you take too many tablets, tell your doctor immediately or telephone your local casualty for advice. Only take for as long as recommended. Regular usage may result in you being restless and irritable, if you stop taking them.
Side effects: Most people do not have a problem with these but some may find themselves suffering from one of the following - stomach discomfort or pain, nausea, stomach ulcer, black tarry stools, rashes, itching, worsening of asthma, unexplained wheezing or shortness of breath, liver and kidney problems, headache, sleepiness, dizziness and hearing disturbances, constipation, respiratory depression, cough supression, drowsiness and rarely skin peeling, easy bruising or facial swelling.
If you suffer any of these stop taking the tablets and see your doctor.
Licence holder and manufacturer: Crookes Healthcare Limited, (hmm they are with their prices!!) Nottingham, NG2 3AA.
I hope this review has been a help as a buying guide. I would recommend them even the side effects list does seem rather long. They have definately eased my pain.

Wisdom teeth, nasty! Good review, I might give these a try - regular ones don't seem to work on intense pain! Becky x
Advantages: A very effective painkiller for a wide range of ailments. Disadvantages: can be addictive if taken for prolonged periods. Can cause some unpleasant side effects with some people.

Review of Nurofen Plus
Advantages: Quick and effective in dealing with migraine and tension headaches. Disadvantages: Make you incredibly drowsy. Codeine based medication so can become habit forming.
