Nurofen Plus is the strongest pain killer that is currently available over the counter without a prescription (or gun!). I only learnt of its existence when I had the mother of all headaches a few weeks ago. I went on a quest to buy co-codomol; yet typically (and indeed annoyingly) the pharmacist had a billion questions to ask before selling me the analgesia. At this point she recommended Nurofen Plus.
Nurofen Plus is manufactured by Crookes Healthcare Limited. It is for the relief of moderate to severe pain caused by the symptoms which include; “migraine, headache, cramping period pain, dental pain, back pain, neuralgia, rheumatic and muscular pain, feverishness and symptoms of colds and flu. “
Nurofen Plus tablets are designed to have a dual effect for fast effective relief. Each tablet contains the two active ingredients; Ibuprofen 200mg and Codeine Phosphate 12.8 mg. (Please
refer to the information leaflet provided for the full list of other ingredients; which rather oddly includes ‘talc’ ! ) The Ibuprofen is known as a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID); this drug works by; reducing the hormones in your body that cause inflammation, pain and high temperature. The Codeine Phosphate is obtained from opium or prepared from morphine; it is is an analgesic which prevents pain messages reaching the brain.
When taking this pain killer; tiredness or dizziness can be expected; so make sure you are not affected in this way; before driving or operating machinery. Unwanted side effects can be; “ stomach discomfort or pain, nausea, stomach ulcer, black tarry stools; rashes itching, worsening of asthma, wheezing or shortness of breath, liver and kidney problems, headache, hearing disturbances, constipation, respiratory depression, cough suppression, skin peeling, easy bruising or facial swelling. ” ( Cor blimey Gov’ner ! ) If you have used this analgesia regularly for a long period of time; you will find: when you stop taking it, you will suffer from restlessness and irritability (nothing new there then ! ).
Nurofen Plus is claimed to be tolerated well by most. However should you experience any of the side effects or have any other unusual symptoms; stop taking the tablets and contact your doctor.
It is advised that you don’t take this painkiller if: you have had an allergic reaction to aspirin, ibuprofen or codeine; you have had or have a stomach ulcer; or suffer from constipation. It is best to consult your doctor before taking Nurofen plus if: you suffer from asthma or have any history of asthma; If you are taking any other NSAID’s; you have a head injury; you are taking regular medication; or if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Avoid drinking alcohol when taking Nurofen Plus as alcohol can alter the effect of the analgesia. ~There are alot of stipulations that restrict many people from taking this analgesia; as with most drugs. I have mentioned a few of the more common reasons; but it is not necessary to list them all in a review. If you do intend to take this analgesia ensure you read the enclosed leaflet detailing the restrictions. If you are unsure; consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Nurofen Plus can be purchased from any chemist in boxes of 12 (for the princely sum of £2.95) or boxes of 24 (£5.50; but I’ve never been rich enough to buy these!) The prices can vary from chemist to chemist. Nurofen Plus is only suitable for adult’s and children that are aged 12 + The directions of use are to; swallow 1 or 2 tablets with water every 4 to 6 hours. No more than 6 tablets should be taken in 24 hours; if you do take too many tablets by mistake; you should contact your doctor or your local Accident and Emergency department immediately.
If your pain persists or worsens; you should stop taking the tablets and consult your doctor.
Everyone has varying pain thresholds, mine is really quite low. However my tolerance to painkillers is quite high. I chose Nurofen Plus as I was informed that; due to the combination of two of the most powerful and effective non prescription analgesia’s, this pain killer is the best available. I found Nurofen Plus to be moderately effective for my headache; turning a full blown unbearable headache into a merely a dull ache. Comparative to co-codomol (the next strongest analgesia; available without prescription) I found the effectiveness very similar. Yet; co-codomol is significantly cheaper and the side effects are not believed to be as frequent or as harsh.
Nurofen is well packaged; in a distinctive, sleek, silver box (see pictures). The tablets are sealed in foil blister packs for easy access and safe storage. The packaging does not sport any child safety measure; so keep out of children’s reach. The information leaflet is well laid out and the details of the pain killer are easy to read and understand.
You will find if taking analgesia that contains codeine phosphate for a long period of time; constipation will become an issue .When I was taking it frequently for a number of days I found taking a mild laxative alongside Nurofen Plus was very beneficial. (I bought the laxative over the counter at a pharmacy after discussing the issue it with a pharmacist first.)
If you take Codeine Phosphate frequently for a prolonged period of time; due to its opium base; you are at a high risk of becoming physically dependant on it; with or without psychological dependence. This information is not given on the leaflet provided with Nurofen Plus; which in itself is un-forgivably dangerous Taking this information into consideration; should you find yourself taking this pain killer for a long period of time; it is important that you consult your doctor.
It is listed in the side effects that these tablets can cause stomach ulcers. The more I read about this analgesia; the more I learnt just how frequent this side effect occurs. This is largely caused by the Ingredient ‘ibuprofen’.
Overall I have concluded that as an occasional pain relief; Nurofen Plus is an effective analgesia; it is fast acting, easy to take and is effective enough to reduce the pain from the list of symptoms. (It does what it said it would on the box!) However; it is stupidly expensive and taken for a prolonged period of time potentially could be very detrimental to your health. As such it should be taken with caution ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
be happy + pain free dudes !
