Nurofen contains Ibuprofen which is the generic name for this drug and it belongs to the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory group of drugs (NSAID) As the name would suggest this drug can reduce many inflammatory conditions (muscular pain, sprains, dental pain) along with more simpler pains such as period pains, backache, headaches etc yet it does not contain any steriods. There you go a long winded name that is actually really simple (now thats a first for the medical proffession.)

As for the price - this varies so shop around. Obviously petrol stations etc are mauch more expensive to purchase this in and supermarkets and chemists less. Boots are doing an offer on this drug at the moment and 16 tablets are 99p but this can go up to £1.89 ordinarily.
This drug is also available on prescription although you won't get Nurofen you will get Ibuprofen which as I said is exactly the same drug. Its a bit like buyinh Tesco value products as opposed to a branded name. Very often there is no difference except in the packaging.
The slogan of Nurofen is "Hits pain where its needed" and certainly in both my experience as a professional nurse and as a user this does ring true. I won't bore you with the pain pathways and how the body knows exactly where to direct the painkiller to fight the pain (lets just say it does) but certainly with Nurofen it works quickly, lasts for about 6 hours and is readily available to buy as I mentioned above.
There like everything are words of caution and people that this drug is certainly not suitable for. Nurofen can be very irritant to the stomach so is a big no no for anyone suffering from stomach ulcers or duodenal ulcers. The tablet irritates the stomach in almost all people and is essential that it is taken with food. Ok I admit its easy to get up and take a couple of tablets without food but when taking this tablet please please please at least make sure you have a glass of milk or a piece of toast. Long term usage on an empty stomach can cause all sorts of problems, stomach bleeding and stomach ulcers are examples and both could result in surgery. A bit extreme because you took it on an empty stomach wouldn't you agree?
Non-Steroidal drugs (Aspirin is also in this group) can also affect asthamtics and it is therefore said that asthmatics must NOT take this group of drugs. On a more positive note recent research shows that not all asthmatics are allergic to non-steroidals and it may be a little as 5% that find they can't take them. However it is certainly not recommended to take them if you are unsure. However some hospitals may prescribe this drug for you while you are an inpatient. This is because you will be monitored and if any breathing difficulties were to occur you are surrounded by highly trained personel that can basically save your life. In a nut shell if you are an asthamic that currently takes this drug (as I am) then you are one of the lucky ones that is not affected. If you are reading this and your asthmatic PLEASE DON'T TRY IT.
Nurofen is available in tablet form, Enteric Coated (which are designed to be more gentle on the stomach lining,) caplets, liquid filled capsules and in an elixier form. Its best to shop around and find which form you find it easist to swallow but as the brands get more fussy (ie liquid filled capsules) the cost rockets accordingly.
This tablet is not suitable for children under the age of 12 and the elderly have to take this with caution. The recommended dose is 400mg every four hours and you can't take more than 6 tablkets in a day. In my experience I never take to take these more often than 6 hourly but if after 4 hours the pain is still there. Like any drug its important not to exceed the recommended dose and to seek medical advice if you take more than 1200mg in a 24 hour period.
Nurofen is suitable to be taken with paracetamol as well as its a different frug group so if I have terrible pain 2 paracetamol and 2 Nurofen normally hits the pain within 20 minutes and after 30 minutes the pain has gone.
All Nurofen packets come with a very detailed leafet including do's and dont's and all the information you could possibly ever need. Nurofen is made by Crookes Healthcare in Nottingham and there contact details are available on both the box and the leaflet - which is clever as most people lose the leaflet.
On another note I always but Nurofen but as I said Nurofen is simply Ibuprofen and this can be bought from chemists for a little as 50p so if you have never tried this its affordable and is really really effective for pain.
Advantages: Good general pain relief Disadvantages: Not suitable for everyone, can cause some bad side effects, expensive

Advantages: Good pain killer Disadvantages: Can be harsh on the stomach, those with asthma should tread carefully
...already covered an op on Nurofen Plus - but am a little concerned at some of the misconceptions about the nurofen product range. I trained as a nurse many years ago and more recently worked for three years as a stock control manager for a pharmaceutical company, whereby I needed to develop and maintain a broad knowledge on a variety of medical products from the common aspirin to the more powerful stuff that we won't mention here. WHAT IS IT?
Nurofen (Generic name Ibuprofen) belongs to a group of drugs known as NSAID's (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), and has similar properties to Aspirin, but is apparently not as harsh on the stomach. Aspirin and Ibuprofen MUST never be combined as it will increase the risk of stomach bleeds. Users should be wary of using Nurofen (or any of the generic own brands such as Superdrug, Unichem, Tescos, Sainsburys and names ...

Advantages: It works. Disadvantages: Expensive, when you consider the cost of generic Ibuprofen.
...come in asking me what Nurofen contains, whether or not it contains Aspirin is surprising. It's actually a *lot* cheaper to buy generic Ibuprofen rather than Nurofen.
Nurofen is a brand name for Ibuprofen. Iburofen itself is a non-steriodal anti-inflammatory, or NSAID. It has three actions: analgesic (pain-killing), anti-inflammatory (reduces swelling) and anti-pyretic (fever/temperature-reducing).
It is useful for all kinds of pain-relief, such ... ...temperature after a fever.
Nurofen should not be taken if you have had a history of stomach-ulcers. If you are asthmatic, or have heart problems, and haven't had Nurofen/Ibuprofen before, you should let the pharmacy assistant know. Although Nurofen can provoke your asthma, it does so only in a very small number of sufferers. If you are taking any prescribed medication, you should also tell this to the assistant that serves you.

Advantages: Excellent for pain relief Disadvantages: Not Suitable For Long-term Use
...really more of a warning. Nurofen is an extremely useful medicine. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory and seems to get to the site of pain fast. There is, however, something you should all be aware of.
This medication can do a lot of damage to your stomach. I used this as a painkiller over about an eighteen month period and it caused a stomach ulcer to develop. The problem with severe pain is that you tend not to want to eat much when in pain. ... ...It is certainly correct when nurofen call this 'a breakthrough in pain relief'. All I want to do is advise folk to be aware of possible side-effects caused by long-term use. I am now unable to eat any foods that are remotely acidic and have to take ranitidine daily to avoid further damage, If I can help others avoid this problem this opinion has been worth writing. ...

Advantages: Effective pain relief for most people Disadvantages: Side-effects and allergic reactions for some
I took Nurofen a few years ago, when I was living at home with my parents during my wilderness years. I had a severe headache, and found them in the back of the bathroom cabinet - my big brother had left them behind. I read the side of the packet, and read through the leaflet that came with them. I took two tablets. I waited for my headache to go. It went. But I found myself in agony. My back hurt. My chest hurt. I could not stand up straight. Whichever ... ...be a correlation between the Nurofen and the pain, so I didn’t take any more. The next day, after one of the worst nights of my life, suffering pain comparable with the difficult labour I had with my daughter, I went to the chemists and asked if it could be related to taking the Nurofen. I found out that Nurofen must only be sold over the counter (OTC), and that some asthmatics (I had mild asthma and rarely needed an inhaler) could suffer an allergic ...

Advantages: FAST ACTING, CHEAPER THAN OTHER MIGRAINE TABLETS,GOOD VALUE Disadvantages: DONT TASTE NICE!!
after suffering with constant migraines for 4 years now and after going to the doctors to be advised to take eye tests etc i have finally found a tablet that banishes my dreadful migraines as soon as i can feel them coming on. The Nurofen for migraines are excellent and for those of you that suffer with migraines just like myself you will know what they feel like and the signs of them coming on. i took 2 of these wonderful tablets at 7am this morning and thought another groggy day was ahead of me but by 9.30 when i got to work this morning it had completely gone. The tablets are not a nice tasting tablet as the other Nurofen i have taken before with a sugar coating but taken straight away with water they certainly cure my migraines and do the job. I have taken Migraleive in the past and they are good but just so expensive and sometimes ...
Advantages: A very effective painkiller for a wide range of ailments. Disadvantages: can be addictive if taken for prolonged periods. Can cause some unpleasant side effects with some people.
~ ~ I'm a great believer in the beneficial effects of Aspirin.
This marvellous wee 'wonder drug' has been a fixture in my medicine cabinet for as far back as I can remember. I take a tablet every morning to help thin my blood, and thus aid my circulation, as being a smoker I worry about the dangers of blood clotting and possible stroke.
I find that it also helps the arthritis that I have in my hands, most probably as a result of too many cold mornings spent on golf courses over the years.
~ ~ But sometimes Aspirin just can't cut it, especially when it comes to severe pain, and then something a bit stronger is called for.

Girls, if you are like me and suffer tremendous headaches around a certain time of the month, what better way to get rid of them that Nurofen?
Over the years I’ve suffered from Migraines occasionally and headaches generally always just seem to knock you off centre. You don’t always have time to go to the doctor’s and get something on prescription – and in any case I just think that’s a waste of a Doctor’s time. So it’s down to the old pain relief/headache tablets.
Which one to use though – there are so many.
We always have paracetomol around the house somewhere. They are so handy and cheap. I’ve always preferred them to the likes of Anadin, but the one that works for me and quickly is always Nurofen. I’m not a chemist and I’m sure you have no need of me to bore ...
